Took all of 'em four hours to kill a creature with 100 billion+ HP. And Slashdot has the story. (Click me!) (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/11/26/1848238&mode=thread&tid=127&tid=186&tid=206&tid=209)

That's a really uplifting story, even though I don't play EQ. It kind of makes me want to be a part of it... but at the same time, I want to keep a real-world life...

I wish we had that kind of stuff in EQPS2=/

Ugh... no longer an unkillable creature, they redid the mob. It used to have some absoutely absurd like 30k regen a tick but they nerfed it. Upped it's dps but after the regen was booted it was just a matter of time until enough people got bored enough to sit there and kill it. It was still never meant to be killed, and will never be killed again.
No loot = No point.

Uhh... I think you're missing the point: they killed the un-killable! Loot lasts for as long as you own it, glory lasts forever... err, something like that.

I guess its important to them to be world renowned in a make-believe world. :o

Does that thing fight back? It would have been sweet to see it attacking the mob, offing them left and right, then you'd see deceased come running back in from their bind zone.
Man, that kind of makes me miss EQ. At least FFXI should be able to ease the pain after christmas.

Reminds me of a battle I saw during the beta period of Earth and Beyond. I was hauling trade goods from one planet to another, in my simple ship (only had a missle launcher and two laser cannons) when I got a broadcast SOS. Some aliens were coming out in the same sector that Earth was in and attacking anything and everything. Even though I could'nt do much, I changed course right away and blasted back into hyperspace. Five minutes when I got there, my jaw dropped. About twenty or so alien ships, which looked to be battleships, were on a dead run for Earth, blasting everything in their path. There was about a hundred or so PC ships allready in the area, trying to cordinate attacks and do something to slow them down. (I found out later it was a 'test' done by the creators on purpose. If we stopped the main space station from being destroyed, we'd get some free time. They also wanted to test lag and ship limits in a sector. Needless to say, there WAS some bad lag.) I made attack runs from long distance until I finally had to limp out there with my weapons destroyed and my engines heavily damaged. We succeeded in stopping the attack, though.
A friend has told me that a similar thing happened in Jumpgate, an older online game that he plays in.

Soul, nice story, but from what I hear, nothing in MMORPG history could compare to this battle.

Not sure if this is true or not, but I once read that way back when Ultima Online first started a group of players actually managed to off Lord British (the character, not the designer :P ) within like the first few months or so and they weren't supposed to do that.
THAT should've been a big "D'oh!"

I read that too. It's supposingly true as there was an article about it in Computer Gaming World. The only difference was that it was a single individual I believe and not a group. I think he set up a trap, snuck behind and killed him from behind while he was giving a speech or something. The guy was supposingly banned for doing it I hear.
The only thing that sucks about the EQ story though is that for a kill that grand they should have received some sort of Godly treasure or something.

You'd think they'd've figured by now that proclaiming a mob "umkillable" is equivalent to rolling it in fish guts and dropping it into the tiger pit, complete with a sign that says, "Please rip me into little pieces."

Yeah, I recall reading this in PC Gamer when it was "news". Remembering the guy's alias (Rainz), I found this link (http://www.aschulze.net/ultima/stories9/beta.htm) about the whole deal. He was banned, but only from the beta, if I remember correctly.

that reminds me of playing might and magic on the genesis. there was a dragon called the "mega dragon" that destroyed the world in a past time. (something like that, it's been at least 10 years since i've played the game.) a feature of this game was that you could travel back in time. so i basically, went back in time, found the "mega dragon" and after many tries, finally killed it. i thought i was going to get some great reward or something, but i think they figured no one would ever bother taking the time to kill it...it had probably 100X more hp than any other monster in the game. it gave me a tiny bit of exp, and gold, and that's it.
plus, killing the dragon before it destroyed the world, didn't change the world in the future...what a plot hole!

a.) There are server-wide speeches made by Lord British. "In a stroke of irony, Lord British kindly asks the gathered vermin to stop stealing."
b.) Rainz's buddy uses his high-level thief to steal a Fire Field spell from a backpack (as Rainz did not come with his mage character) and Rainz casts that on the bridge.
c.) Blackthorne says "Nice try"
d.) Lord British dies
e.) Rainz is banned from the BETA server, not all UO servers. The incident gave the UO devs his account information and as he had been warned in the past about utilizing exploits in the game (having killed hundreds via an exploit and causing them to express disgust and leave the beta) his behavior was detrimental to the server. Banned from the test server, because instead of reporting bugs he exploited them.
I'd say that was the previous most famous moment in an online game. I can't say whether this one is more famous or not, but ironically that last incident seems to have given UO a black eye, though not a well deserved one.

-_-
Not impressive at all. The rules in EQ change overnight, with items added then removed, classes balanced and then nerfed on a whim. The uber zones and uber mobs of yesterday are now playgrounds for the newbie guilds.
This is far from the first time an "unkillable" mob in EQ was killed. You can find plenty of old FoH stories for those. And, as usual, no EQ story like this is complete without the GMs pulling their BS tactics of resetting the zone, etc.
I should mention that none of these problems would've existed in the first place had the devs actually planned out and *finished* the content they put in. Flashback to the first Vox kill in 1999 and how that wasn't finished either.
/. considered this "news" lol

Both links are news to me (EQ, UO) - and both are pretty cool. It's as close as we'll get, in today's gaming world, to discovering the first Easter Eggs.
