A strange SNES discovery...

Someone I know has two SNES systems-one is hers and one belongs to her sister. What I found to be odd is that the systems have sequential serial numbers. AFAIK they were bought at the same time back in 1992. They've even got different levels of discoloration-one of them is discolored on the bottom only, while the other one has both top and bottom.

I checked the newer systems (GBA, Cube), and even the ones that are packaged together do not have sequential serial numbers.

Is this a fluke? I thought it was pretty neat-o. :)

hmm. I think that with pre N64 things, the serial number tells you the production run, manufacturing plant, etc. I don't know if it numbered individual units (for example, the two above systems could have come from sequential production runs), but the individual serial no. tracking wasn't in place until the barcode system that Nintendo and Sony currently use was introduced.

At my old job we used to use Dell PC's. And whenever new ones came in bunches of, say, five or six at a time ordered by one department or another, there would usually be a sequence to the Service Tag #'s on the CPU's, eg. - CX1JT, CX1JU, CXIJV etc. So at the very least it indicates that the machines were distributed in the same order, and very well could have been mfg'd in the same assembly line as well.

So the question is, were the consoles bought at the same time in the same store? (wow..two kids in the same family each get their own console for Christmas...Dad musta been rich.). Some purchasing history might explain this one a little better.

Same time around Christmas in '92 and both at a Toys-R-Us in Cincy. My sister and I don't get along, thus the need for two....and since then, she fell outta the gaming circle.....while I just fell outta gaming until FFVII was released. Last night, though, I claimed her SNES and games after months of begging. She never used it anyways.

Anyways I laughed a bit when I noticed the serial numbers. It was interesting to say the least.

Very cool find.....serial numbers generally are sequential...those certainly aren't model numbners.

Just for the sake of having something no one else does (at least I've never run into that) that's pretty cool..first I've ever seen it documented. Congrats! Good eye!

Hey,

Here's another thing, i have a ton of first run Snes consoles, and some snes that where made alittle latter, and there alot of changes on the boards, just thought i'd drop that by, also...

There is a silver guard on the older models that has SHVS on it, on the newer snes boards all that is gone???

Also wasn't SHVS something to do with the super famicom ( jap snes )
