As much as I totally discount a causal link between video games and real violence...I can't get the thought out of my head of some nutbags popping heads playing Grand Theft Auto 3, and then looking up at the deer rifle mounted over the TV and going, "Hmmmm."

Even if there isn't a connection, look for the usual suspects to bring up the sniper connection to GTA3 shortly and blame the game for the recent killings.

"Push back the release date of Vice City will they?!?!...I'll show 'em!"

These. (If the link doesn't work, go to cnn.com's homepage, you can't miss it.)

Of COURSE someone is going to blame video games. I give it a week.
Expect footage of GTA3 and Doom to be shown. Bonus points if the old standby Mortal Kombat is thrown in as well.

If video games are blamed for this (which will probably only happen if the guys are caught) then it will fall on the FPS genre to be the media whipping boy.

The first thing I thought of was GTA 3 Sniping too, but chances are it is not related. Sick Ba$tard whoever it is.

The more I've heard about this the more it sounds like someone who knows what they are doing rather than some kid emulating a video game. Scary shit.

I blame Duck Hunt.

Why didn't they blame Battlezone when that guy jacked the tank in San Diego a few years back? Leiberman missed the boat on that one. That was probably how he learned to drive a tank in the first place. Maybe it was that and Combat that allowed him to have the skillz.

they would have DEFINITELY blamed that one on GTA3 if it had been out for that dude with the tank.

There was a second set of shootings this morning I guess... But the first event was 7 for 7 today it's like 1 for 7. So it looks like the first guy knew what he was doing; the guy today is probably a copy cat. Great, two of them...

If they blame it on any game it has to be Silent Scope by Konami.

They already did. The first news story on the Today show today was how videogames were responsible for these shootings. They did mention Silent Scope as well as several 1st person shooters.

I don't think videogames turn people into killers. A killer may use a videogame as a training aid or to live out a fantasy, but I doubt someone is going to walk away from playing Silent Scope saying "Gee I think I'd like to go and shoot someone now since this game showed me how much fun it could be".

On the other hand I think between TV and Videogames we've become majorly desensitized to violence, and that worries me a bit. Personally my favorite videogames are usually non-violent.

I've heard three things not mentioned so far:

(1) they think the killer might have been somebody who was turned down by the military
(2) the bullets used in the most recent shooting match the gun used in the original shootings
(3) the guy who found Paul Bernardo is going down to help investigators.

If games come up in the media it's entirely fabricated by them at this point. Politicians aren't the only ones who can 'profit' by bringing up non-issues.

I also forgot to mention that on the Today show the guy who they were interviewing said he thought it was a videogamer because of that tarot card they found where he said he was God. He said because people playing 1st person shooters always say they are God in the chat windows and the fact that there are also God modes in these games proves it. What kind of screwed up logic is that?

I remember watching that worlds scariest police chases or some such show a few weeks ago, and I believe the guy was actually ex-military. I think he was in the gulf war. And he was also very much stoned out of his mind. The cops that shot him said when they were yelling down at him and asking him to surrender, he only glanced up once, and his eyes were totally glazed over.

Of course, If it had been a kid, I think they probably would have blamed it on video games. <shrug>

Just my 2 cents anyway.

The media is always looking for somewhere to put the blame, and blaming it on video games is always the easiest solution...has alway been and will alwalys be...

Like Occams Razor;

"The simplest explanation is probably the right explanation"

...and the simplest explanation here is that violent video games made him do it...nothing simpler that that

Unfortunately, it`s like blaming a TV show for causing epileptic seizures...the illness is always there, but something always triggers it the first time.

I just don't go for blaming movies or video games for death and human misery.

You are sick to begin with if you enjoy hurting people, and video games and movies don't make you like that.

Perhaps there is some desensitization going on, but that doesn't result in a desire to shoot people. And frankly, real violence is far more nauseating than anything we see on a screen. Most people, even die hard fans of violent entertainment, would agree.

Yeah. People chatting on those, even any, games also say 'owned' and the n-word alot. I doubt that means they're slave owners.

Where'd you hear that? He took the weekend off... Weekend job? Reserves??

By the way, heard on the radio this morn it might be two teams of two terrorists each team. I wondered about the possibility or terrorists behind it when I first heard about it, but it seems odd that there wouldn't be MORE victims than there are. But I guess whether it's terrorists or not, they're choosing safety over number of victims.

If you play shooting games and it makes you want to kill people, then there always something wrong with you. Its not the games that make people do that, its that you are fucking crazy from the jump.

Jeff Dalmer worked in a chocolate factory. i dont think that gave him the idea to eat black people for dinner
