View Full Version : Stupid idea, awesome game

While I was watching a game review show on Tech TV that was talking about Dino Crisis 3, after I got over my shock at seeing a member of the mainstream media say something about a game besides "Duuur, pretty pitchurs", I couldn't help but think what a stupid idea killer dinosaurs in space is. Then it occured to me that, despite the many bad games with stupid premises, there are many games that are built upon a foundation of something which appears flimsy at best, but turns out to make a fantastically fun game. Off the top of my head:

Space Channel 5 - Dance and shoot multicolored aliens who are being controlled by someone who appears to be the guy in charge of Fox News. (Tell me you didn't think that when he said "the people don't need truth!" :p) It rules.

Harvest Moon series - You're a farm boy. Farm, boy, farm. It also rules.

Kingdom Hearts - Help Aerith Gainsborough save Mickey Mouse. I'd mock it mercilessly if it wasn't so damn much fun.

Add more!

Crazy Taxi. Who would have thought driving a taxi was so much fun?

That Mr. Mosquito game on PS2. That's gotta rank up high on the list.

Monster Party. It seems quite fecked-up... and it IS fecked-up, but it's a damned good game. It's not for everyone, though. I like it, but I don't expect you to. If you play it, do not adjust your TV set. You are not on drugs. Just repeat to yourself "It's only a video game..." It really is that FUBAR.

Perhaps I can cite a better example than MP...

A Boy and his Blob. You're a boy. You have a pet blob. And your pet blob does the BEST tricks in the whole world.. when you feed him jellybeans. A real WTF :)

Tetris - The blocks fall and it's your job to organize them neatly. Be sloppy about it and it's game over.

Pipo Saru 2001 (the semi-sequel) to Ape Escape (PS2)...

Suck the shorts off of monkeys and put them into a giant laundry machine! Too bad this game never made it to the states, it's REALLY fun, and has hilarious animations, and some great gameplay to go with it.

I've always enjoyed a good pachinko sim. Without the possibility of making some money, pachinko is rather pointless. Hell, even when money's involved it's rather pointless. But they keep churning them out, and people (myself included) keep buying them.

I've got three:

Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman (PSX) - Okay, so maybe it's not that great of a game, but it sure is funny as hell.

Incredible Crisis (PSX) - Follow a normal family through a not so normal day. Um....what? I've only played a little bit of this (my PS2 doesn't seem to like it), but what I've played of it is awesome.

The Sims (Multi) - What would make a guy who hates his job come home and play a virtual version of himself hating his job is beyond me. But, it keeps being a best seller, so some people must like it.

If we're just going on pure story line, then as always, blaster master ranks HIGH on the list :)

Wario Ware sounded SO stupid to me. Three-second minigames? How the hell is THAT fun?

Rent a Hero. You're (apparently learning to be) a superhero and you have to run errands for people. Hehehe (http://61.197.171.6/nbcs/palet_img/0018759o.jpg). Too funny.

No, that's actually a pretty good one. I can still remember entering a room to fight an enormous boss, only to have him tell me, "Sorry, but I'm already dead."
