this thread will probably turn into a giant fanboy flaming... but, with that in mind, i say Gamecube, for sure. =)
it's cheap as hell, and that zelda disk makes it one helluva steal... plus all the quality first party titles... METROID PRIME in particular...

Personally, PS2. I've gone through 2 Gamecubes. Sold the first one after being disappointed by Metroid Prime and Zelda: WW. Sold the second one after being disappointed by F-ZERO GX. Only game I really played a lot was Super Smash Bros. Melee. And Animal Crossing, but it died down after a few months (both times ^^)
However, my PS2 still gets played daily. Either my American or Japanese one. Usually both. Except for those rare occasions when I'm not home for an entire day.

Watch out, Stamp. This thread is gonna open up the fanboy floodgates...
Anyway, I've got both, so I would say that PS1 games get way more play on my PS2 than PS2 games. Of course, PS2 has way more game choices available than GC. However, my GC is a dust collector right now. Not that there aren't enough good games for it, but my Xbox gets fired up way more often than both of them. :D
Still, my choice would be the Zelda bundle. Buy it now, and save yourself the trouble of messing with Nintendo Power subscriptions and pin numbers.

At the moment, my GCN has been getting more play than my PS2. At its current price point, I'd have to reccomend that one. On the other hand, there are a LOT of good, cheap games for PS2 by now, so you might be able to make up the cost of the system on the games.

Go with PS2....the games are cheaper, theres a ton that are less than 20.00 that are worth picking up, and the controller is probably the best.
Gamecube is awesome too, just keep the cola away from it. Spilled one in my first and fried it. :o
get em both! lol

I asked for a GameCube for Christmas. Yeah, the PS2 has a lot of cheap games, and you can play PS1 games on it, but I enjoy the GameCube games more.

Gamecube. Better graphics, better exclusives. Plus the games are starting to come down in price.
I am definetely not a fan boy
I have 40 plus systems and I love them all except 32x and game.com
I very strongly recommend the gamecube over ps2
the thing i play on my ps2 is DVDs

If I had to choose one, I'd pick PS2. Then I'd kill my neighbor and take his gamecube, because I couldn't live with one or the other. PS2 has all my RPG's and Gamecube has all the absolutely awesome nintendo exclusives, and with the gameboy player I can get in on all that good action too.

No offense, but I'm SICK of these topics. You're NOT going to get any help. It boils down to:
A. - Which system has games you want to play
B. - How much are you willing to spend.
That's it, nothing else. That is applicable for EVERY system ever made. Period.

can't go wrong with either, but i would go with the cube.
and if you don't want the bouns disc you could always sell it to some sucker on ebay and make some extra cash

ya know Syluntwulf has a point. Whenever I was out looking for a new system I'd take a catelog and look at the games. Forget specs, they mean nothing. It all boils down to what system has the games you want to play most. Its really a personal call.
Thats like when I was debating over a PS & a N64 a long time back...I really like the PS and it was getting better reviews than the N64 and I was like...ok, then I'm getting a PS, it has Crash Bandicoot and other good games! Then I went to Toys R Us and played Mario 64 on the N64 demo unit...within 5 mins my mind was changed, I became so super excited over this game that I lost sleep thinking about it, its the most awesome game I have EVER played to this day! And I don't regret my decision, all based on that one game.
So find what games you want to play the most and go by that. i wish I had done that when the newest systems came out and maybe I wouldnt have bought the Xbox before anything else. :o

You know there alot of valid points here. But I dont know if anybody has
really helped his situation. I have had my PS2 since launch day. And when I got it I said....wow, you can play PS 1 games and use it as a DVD player.
But to tell you the truth it isnt a very good DVD player. It has a huge selection of games for it, and they are cheap. The Gamecube does have alot of cool exclusive stuff for it and personally I love Phatasy star online for it :D
But I digress, they both have great qualitys. The cube is cheaper right now,
But the PS2 has a much bigger library............ :hmm:
Well that didnt help at all. x_x
Good luck :P

@Sylentwulf: I dont think you were being an ass, I understand some annoyance at topics such as these. I have both systems, and personally I prefer the gamecube by a longshot, but that doesnt mean anything to Stamp. Its my favorite because it features unique games that I enjoy more, but everyone has different tastes, so it is completely irrelevant to post my preference. Everyone likes different kinds of games, and no matter how many people post what kinda games the like (and therefore what system they prefer), Its not gonna help Stamp at all. Not even in the slightest. He is just gonna have to buckle down and decide what kind a games he prefers and wants to play, because what kinda games you and I wanna play dont affect him at all.
I dont mean to sound like an ass either, but threads like these remind me too much of when I used to patrol the gameFAQs forums, and those were dark days...

if i could get either one at the exact same price i would take the PS2.
there are simply more options, more games, and the good stuff is very very good.
however, the PS2 is currently 70+$ more than the Gamecube- so that means extra money you can spend on games, candy, or whatever you what.
just think about what youll want to play when you actually get the system... that should help you make up your mind

let me complicate this post by adding the X-Box to the mix. I am looking to buy one of the 3 systems and price isn't much of a problem because I am getting a bonus from work and none are too expensive. I am totally confused over which to buy. I like the look of Rogue Sqadron II and III on the GC, but also like GTA III on PS2 and Panzer Dragoon Orta on the X-Box. Is the X-Box the most powerful of the 3?
Sylentwulf
12-06-2003, 07:58 PM
As far as graphics and sound go, the Xbox IS superior to the other 2 without a doubt. Personally there are only 3-4 games out of the whole xbox library that I would be even REMOTELY interested in, which is why I don't have one.
Gamecube is probably a bit ahead of the PS2 in graphics, but the controller hurts it a bit. That thing just sucks for a lot of games.
Cmosfm
12-06-2003, 08:03 PM
yes Stargate, I whole heartedly agree that the Xbox is more powerful...but that means nothing unless your an obsessive fanboy ogling over specs.
While the system has a few big name titles, the majority of the games suck ass. I can't count how many games I actually like on it on one hand. Lemme explain how much I think the Xbox is worse than the other systems...If a game comes out on all 3 systems Ill pay MORE to get a PS2 or a GC version.
Really though, please don't get an Xbox, and Xbox is good if your one of those people who just have to impress his friends more than he wants actual good games. The PS2 has the most games and better games, cheaper games. Hell, you even have to pay an extra 30 bucks to watch DVDs! The only thing good its got going is its built in hard drive...but thats nothing when theres no games worth buying to use the HD to save data with.
Buy an Xbox and kick yourself in the ass later, because thats what you will be doing. MAN I hate the Xbox

I have all three of the new systems and they all have their good points.
XBox -> Halo
PS2 -> Gran Turismo 3
Gamecube -> Mario and Zelda
right now at college i only have my xbox with me and it gets played everyday. linked up halo multiplayer is amazing. if you know people with and xbox such as in college, buy this system and halo. if not any of the 3 systems is a good choice and it all depends of the games that each system has available.

Whether you want to admit it or not, Xbox is the most powerful system with the best features. It has the best graphics, sound capabilities, and a customizable soundtrack feature that I can't get enough of. Everybody says that Halo is the only reason to own an Xbox, and I will admit that I don't own Halo. (I'll buy it when the price goes way down.) That doesn't stop me from enjoying my Xbox though. Again, I'm not a fanboy, but you can't deny the goodness that is Crimson Skies, Project Gotham Racing 2, or Counterstrike, or at least, I can't.
However, exclusives don't always make a system. The game I play the most on the Cube is NBA Street 2. Why? Because it's fun. I also like Bomberman Generation, Timesplitters 2, and Soul Calibur 2. Yes, I've got the 3 Nintendo exclusives everybody brings up all the time (Mario Sunshine, Zelda, and Metroid), but they don't grab my attention. So, I agree with Sylentwulf. Buy the one with the games you want. However, I believe in getting limited-ed bundles like the Zelda Cube before buying a common system like the PS2.

I own all three current generation consoles as well as almost every past one. Which current system out of Gamecube, PS2, or Xbox gets played the most? My Gamecube. Plus, it's $99.99 (last Friday it was $80 at Walmart). You absolutely can not go wrong buying a system at that price with a Zelda compilation disc. Plus, there are a ton of great games out there for the GC. I love all of my systems, and I can easily recommend the Gamecube at $99.99 with the Zelda disc over a PS2 any day ;)

I have both, but if you get one id say PS2. All kinds of great games, and even better ones for cheaper. DVD is also a plus.
The only games that i play on my GCN is SSBM and Animal Crossing.
Plus PS2 has Midways Greatest hits. :)

Well, if you're a Zelda fan then the Gamecube is a must. Look at it this way.
Buy Wind Waker, get the promo disc with 4 zelda games, buy a gameboy player, and enjoy every single Zelda game ever made, minus the cd-i games, and other odd ball ones.
It's worth buying a Gamecube for the Zelda experience alone, not to mention all the other great games like Animal Crossing, Mario Kart: DD, Resident Evil Remakes, and much more. With a Gamecube you will have plenty of gaming to last you into the next generation EASILY.
Oh yeah, you can get All the Sonic games on there too. :-P

but you can't deny the goodness that is .... Counterstrike
tell me you didn't really say THAT!!!! omg, you know, i played counter-strike from beta 5 to final 1.5 (until i moved and lost broadband), so i know what i'm talking about, the Xbox version is CRAP, go get yourself (the free) pc version and play it, it's far superior, the single-player mode of the Condition Zero is not worth the money at all

12-07-2003, 09:42 AM
My version of Xbox Counterstrike was free, so I don't need the PC version, but let's not turn this into a confrontation. A few people have expressed their disgust for the Xbox. I expressed why I like it. I'm just highlighting what I think are some of the Xbox's high points, although there are others.
Also, I'm not a PC gamer, so I'll leave comparisions of both versions to the experts. I will admit that the story mode lacks in the Xbox version (what story mode?), but the game is addictive...

Personally my PS2 gets way more play time than the other systems. I usually take out my Gamecube when an exclusive comes out (SMS, Zelda) then it gets put away again. XBox doesn't even get taken out for the exclusives. My PS2 gets regular play time because of games like Amplitude, Final Fantasy, plus all the other games (PS2 & PS One). There's just much more selection with the PS2 and it seems like the exclusives are few and far between for the cube and the multi-platform releases are a bit....dull (sports are all that comes to mind right now, some action)
Unfortunately, I've grown past the age of Mario so Mario Party & Mario Kart DD don't excite me anymore. I can do without.
Even when my Zelda disc does come, it will be shelved. I've got the games on other consoles and I'm not too lazy so I can pull them out when need be.

Out of the 3 next-gen consoles currently available, the only one that gets any real playtime is the cube, from me. The PS2 doesn't have much in way of games that really make me want to play em, except for ports of Dreamcast games that never came out here. Off of the top of my head, I can think of like, 4 or 5 non DC games on the ps2 I want that are out now. So about all I use mine for is to play PS1 games.
Now the cube, not only do I have the most games for the thing, but I play them more often, too. Quite frankly, there's more games on that thing that I'm looking forward too, and quite a number of worthwhile titles. Mario Kart Double Dash is pretty badass, and you've got solid platformers like Billy Hatcher and Wario World. The only real complaint I have is a lack of good shooters, but they all suffer from that flaw.
As for the Xbox? Outside of a few games, there's even less on that console that I'd like.

I have have both and for me it boil down to the game library so I play more PS2 and PS1 games atm but I was stoked to add games like Ikaruga to the GC library and I love the Ninty home team exlusives but on the same token I think PS2 has some sweet exclusives as well.
But from a technical stand point heres a few things to consider
PS2
DVD Player - nice if you dont have one - No extra cost
Online Capable - Not as robust as Xbox Live but it has good games - $50 and broadband required. PC and router required, etc...
Good Periferals - I-Toy, DDR, Racing Wheels, Hard Drive in '04, etc...$50 to $100
PS1 Compatible - Cheap games available (relatively speaking) - $5 to $50 each
Cube
4 Player Capable out of the box - Just add new controllers!
GameBoy Player - This is nearly as cool as the Ps2's backwards compatibility - $50
GBA Link Feature - Not a huge selling point IMO but needs mentioning
Limited Online and LAN Capable - Not a huge selling point IMO but needs mentioning
Compact Size - Travels well but buy a padded case. $10- $30 for case
If price isn't a factor here and you're leaning toward to Cube, I d reccomend buying one of the Spice Orange Cubes from an import dealer (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-70-1pj-4-1-71-25.html) that is JAP/USA modified. This will cost a bit more that the PS2 (with the shipping factored in) but it will open up your GC library and the Spice Orange is my fave color.

Can't you just use an Action Replay to play import games on a Cube?

:hmm: The adapter is $40 (comes with the $200 PS2 bundle with ATV Off Road Fury 2) It accepts a 56k connection and I don't understand why you would need a router & a PC? I hook mine directly through the cable modem and haven't had an issue....
On the other hand, the BBA for the Cube is $30 and works with only 1 online game. LAN? Pffft. I'd rather play with someone way way out there rather than my buddy in the next room.
Can't you just use an Action Replay to play import games on a Cube?
That's correct. Although, I think Mr. Driller required an authentic Japanese memory card or system (or something....I don't exactly recall)

Personally I find the router method more convienient since I already have the hardware but you're right you can easily use the direct to modem method.
So my pricing was little off and yes the online bundle is a damn good deal.
56k? What's the point? I wouldn't waste my time or money to play games thru a 56k connection, but hey, that's just the way I roll. :P
I don't know anything about the action replay. I think a modded cube in a non US color is going to be a better value for the collector. Compare JP DC to US DC prices and you'll see what I mean and this could be said for just about any import console out of production.

OK, I went with the GC and picked it up today along with Soul Calibur II, Rogue Squadron III, and Metroid Prime. Even though $$ was not a huge factor, the $99 price tag was attractive. I'm not the kind of guy that buys tons of games anyway. I have hundreds of games for my other "classic" systems, which is what I mainly collect for. I just wanted to own a few "next gen" games so I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I just wish there was a really good racing game for the GC besides Mario Kart. I was hoping Auto Modellista would be good, but it has crappy reviews. Need for Speed Underground looks pretty cool, but they didn't have it.
I want to thank everyone for their input. It's nice to have some honest feedback before you make a purchase.
