Although this topic back around 1990/1991 never did prove as lively as the NES/SMS, 2600/Intellivision, or ColecoVision/5200 comparisons, which of these systems did you side with?

I don't have a preference; I'm afraid that the 16-Bit era did not interest me at all. That's why I simply gave away the Genesis I fixed.

How old are you? When I was growing up, the SNES/Genesis debate was HEATED. The 16-bit era started when I was 11 yrs. old, and throughout middle and early high school I got in more arguments over this than anything else.

Personally I sided with the Super Nintendo, but I wasn't totally devoted to it. My cousin got a Genesis instead, and I often went over there to play Madden, King's Bounty, Sonic, etc. Of course when we argued about it I'd always defend the SNES to the death, but I never ran down the Genesis. If I could've owned both (my parents weren't exactly rich), I would've. And my portable of choice was the Game Gear...

Well, my friend owned a genises, and I owned a SNES. I had fun with Sonic, but that was about it...I admit I didn't play too many Genesis games tho. But, I loved my SNES soooooo much! Me and my sister got one for Christmas and never got tired of it. We played Super Mario World forever, and couldn't get enough of anything Donkey Kong Country. And lets not forget Super Metroid, which I am now trying to beat...never could when I was little. EGM rated Super Metroid as the greatest game of all time and I am starting to agree with them!

No doubt the 16-bit wars were as heated as those for 5200/ColecoVision 2600/Intellivision if not MORE so. Lots of mud-slinging, especially by Sega, who went on an absolute TEAR trying to bring down Nintendo. In some ways, they succeeded. At least they managed to show a chink in Nintendo's armor, that was the first time anyone here had ever seen that.

My vote here would be different on any given day! I love all three of these systems. Only the paltry US library of the TG-16 keeps it from being a regular contender, but if you were to open this up to the "world" and have PC Engine as a competitor, now you've REALLY got a battle on your hands.

I liked the SNES best myself, as to which had the best hardwarse/potential? TG-16 I Think.

Mud-slinging is one thing, but in the 5200/CV debate (plenty of mud-slinging, you can't play them on Coleco!...even as they were making superior versions FOR the CV!), Atari sort of fibbed. They bragged about the 5200's 320X200 resolution and 256 colors, as opposed to the CV's 256X192 resolution and mere 16 colors- what they didn't say, however, was that the 5200 couldn't do both at the same time, but this wasn't the impression you'd get from the ads.

Genesis, hands down, for me. Sure, it couldn't throw as many colors at you as the SNES or TG-16 did but, for my money, the games were just better. I can completely understand why people still like the SNES, I just think the Genny had better games.

Now, if we were throwing all the PC Engine stuff in too, like DP said, that might make a difference. But, if we're just talking about US releases, it's Genny all the way!

well ive never owned a tg16, and ive only played splatterhouse for it, so i cant comment on that, but between the snes and genny, the snes wins by a VERY narrow margin. although the sports games were better on genny (im a big football and hockey game fan) they werent THAT much better than everyone made them out to be. the snes has the rpg's locked down and in my opinion the fighters too. (the genny 6 button controller was better for em, but i didnt mind the snes cont.) street fighter 2 turbo and MK2 were superior on snes, imo.

both system are great though, and thus far that era of gaming was the best, imo.

edit: forgot to mention the flagship series' of both systems, sonic and mario. both game were simply awesome, but to me the mario games were more fun and challenging. i could usually breeze right through the sonic games. oh how i wish for new versions of both of these games in 2D.

I voted for the Turbo-Grafx 16, because its capabilities. Allowing far more onscreen colors than the Genesis was a factor in my vote. The TG-16 did have a small library, but there are many quality titles within it. The hardware for the system was extensive, which makes it more durable than the SNES and the Genesis. Even though the latter also had a CD unit, the TG-16's ability to upgrade the discs to a superior quality comes as a welcome addition. Plus, the Turbo Duo accepts Japanese CD roms without a need for converter or mod chip. Having the ability to freely play domestic games as well as overseas creations tremendously adds to the gaming experience.

Back then, I was all for the SNES. The commercials that Sega made bashing the SNES always offended me... These days, I love all 3. The SNES for all the memories and great games, the Turbo Grafx for Parasol Stars and the CD games, and the Genesis for Mega Turrican and the Sega CD system!

Looks like I just tied it up for the Genesis. I was just thinking about what a great system it was for the time & still is. I've been playing it a lot lately. It's the best of both worlds for me-classic gameplay with killer graphics. Gunstar Heroes, the Sonic series, sports games, & totally original games like Toe Jam & Earl, Flashback-The Quest for Identity, and Earthworm Jim. This system has it all!

Gawd what a hard choice.. I couldn't bring myself to vote.. As all 3 systems lived in harmony and were each loved the same!!!!!!!!!!!1
Yeah I remember.. a night of Ghouls & Ghosts/Golden Axe.. then moving onto Blazing Lazers/Legendary Axe.. The Super NES came out a little later though remember? i.e. for a while it was just Genesis and TG-16.. and maybe NES. :P

It was Genesis for me. It wowed me with it near arcade quality and I was big into arcade titles at the time. When the SNES came out, I was disappointed with the speed of its processor. Sure it looked pretty with its Mode-7 and more colors, but Sega had the games for me. I still purchased a SNES when it was available used at a good price but I only owned about 7 games in its life time.

For me, it's easy: the TG16...if you want to count the import scene. My PC Engine gets more playtime than any of my other 16bit era machines. It has loads of shumps, some of Sega's classic arcade games (Outrun, Afterburner II, Space Harrier, etc), SF2:CE, Dracula X, the Bomberman games, and lots of great originals like the PC KId/Bonk series, Gates and Lords of Thunder.

SNES would be second even though its magic just doesnt hold me like it used to. Genesis would come in third by default as I've only just gotten into Genny gaming.

I own all three and and had a genny and an snes as a kid, so I have to say the snes is my favorite, because it had the most games I enjoyed. In quality I think they are all good as the other system wise and software wise. The Snes is what I played most as a kid, thats all.

That's a hard one. It would be a tie between the
Sega Genesis and Turbo Grafix 16. Both have
their great games, as for the Nintendo it just
doesn't come close. I started playing video
games on the Sega Master System and cont-
inued on the Genesis, then to the Turbo Grafix
16.
Thanks for looking !

Genesis was the best. It had the best sports games. NHLPA was way better on the Genesis then the SNES. The Genesis also had good RPG's but so did the SNES.

The SNES gets my vote, mainly because the Gamecube made me fall back in love with Nintendo. But, for the sake of making my reply interesting, I'll post my opinions on all 3.

SNES - Most well-rounded library of titles ever. Platformers? Both Super Mario Worlds and Mario All-Stars. Shooters? Gradius 3, Super R-Type, Space Megaforce. Character shooters? Contra 3, Mega Man X. Fighters? Street Fighter 2 (and SF2 Turbo), Mortal Kombat 2, even Art of Fighting! Beat 'em Ups? Super Double Dragon, Final Fight trilogy, TMNT 4. RPGs? FF2, FF3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc. Adventure games? Zelda 3, Super Metroid, Castlevania 4, Dracula X. Puzzle games? Tetris Attack, Tetris & Dr. Mario, Bust-a-Move.

Genesis - It takes good knowledge of late 80's and early 90's arcade games to really fully appreciate the Genesis. There are the obvious goodies, like Sonic, Streets of Rage, Gunstar Heroes, Columns, Phantasy Star, Shining Force and Toejam & Earl, but if you dig deeper, you have: Strider, Ghouls & Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds, Truxton, MUSHA, Golden Axe, the Shinobi trilogy, Valis III, Gaiares, Whip Rush, Arrow Flash, Rolling Thunder 2 & 3, Splatterhouse 2 & 3, Burning Force, Space Harrier 2, OutRun, Flicky, Phelios, Alex Kidd, Fire Shark, and more.

TurboGrafx-16 - Speaking of late 80's/early 90's arcade fare, that's almost all that you can get for this system! Certainly not a bad thing, though. I'll try and focus on U.S. titles....Bonk trilogy, Air Zonk, Ninja Spirit, Splatterhouse, Ordyne, Cyber-Core, Blazing Lazers, Aero Blasters, Galaga '90, Alien Crush & Devil's Crush. Of course, there were some real thinking games as well, such as Neutopia and Military Madness. You can also get Wonder Boy for the TG16! (As Dragon's Curse)

I think many of us will pick whichever one we had at the time...as one person said, most people couldn't afford both. I picked the SNES which I might even pick as my all-time favorite system. It has a huge library of great games (my favorites including Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out, DKC, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and so many more) and it actually is the system that got me back into gaming. I'd been out of it maybe 4 or 5 years (I completely missed the NES years) and it's the system I've more games for than any other. I never got into the TG-16 (I had 8 games at one point; now I have a single game) and I also have a Genesis but I think I only have about 40 games for it. A good system...I just prefer the SNES.

The snes was the system that got me back into playing video games. I was at a friends house and I saw Street fighter2 and had to have it. To this day, its still my favorite system. Then MK2 came out for the system...it was like a dream come true. Looks like a mini version of the arcade game with excellent controls. I dont have my first snes, I now have the Mini system. Thats why I still love fighting games.....Snes and SF2... ohyeah I do still play MK2 from time to time :-D

I voted for Genesis, eventhough I enjoy all 3, I remember playing the Genesis the most as a preteen to teenager, the TG 16 and SNES collected the most dust out of the 3, nowadays though I find myself fooling around with the SNES and TG16 more than the Genesis, so I guess my vote was based on nostalgia purposes

Genesis.
Rocket Knight Adventures was (and still is) the best platform game ever, and there are heaps of other great Genesis games, but ive only been able to find a couple of snes games worth playing (mostly shoot 'em ups). The genesis 6-button controller was great with SF2.
Id love to play a turbographx, but they are incredibly hard to find in australia. oh well, thats just one more reason to go for a holiday to america :-D

Yashiro said what I was going to - and he even listed most of the games that I was going to. Oh well.

I had to pick the Genesis, though, simply because it does have the most games that I want to play. Luckily I was able to experience all three of them during their heyday, and I love them all for different reasons. You can't go wrong with any of them, imo.

SNES.

The SNES ports of multi-platform games always looked nicer and sometimes had cooler effects.

This was because of the SNES' much larget available color palette. If Rare tried to make a game like Donkey Kong Country for the Genesis, it would not be able to look ANYWHERE near as nice due to the Genesis' extremely small palette. This limited designers artistic abilities. And made cross platform games look less.. cool on the Genesis.

Now, the SNES also had a lot of really neat breakthroughs. The NES did too (With the advent of MMC chips that allowed the NES to do stuff it would have never been able to do in 1986.) but it was the SNES that had some really cool stuff. The Super FX chips allowed for more advanced 3D effects (For the time) or scaling and rotation. And made games like StarFox and Yoshi's Island possible. Would you have bought StarFox if it were another top down space shooter or Yoshi's Island if it were a normal platformer? Probably, but would they have been as fricking cool?

Of course, the DKC series pushed the SNES' color abilities to the limit and made one hell of a trilogy. (If you don't count DK64 which I'd rather not.)

Long live the TG-16! It may not have had a whole heck of a lot of RPGs, but I still had a blast with it. Great colors, cool CD-ROM before anybody else did, five player capablility, and a TON of imports if you needed. I love my little Turbo!

It has the better games in every genre for me

jump'n run: Super Mario World, Yoshis Island (best ever),Plok,DKC 1-3
shoot'em up: Space Megaforce, Axelay, R-Type 3,Macross-Scrambled Valkier
Action: Super Contra/Probotector (best of series),RENDERING RANGER and SUPER TURRICAN 2----> those two kicked PS/Saturn titles to hell
Beat'em up: Street Fighter series, MK2, Weaponlord,KILLER INSTINCT
side-scrolling Beat'em up: final fight series,Combat Tribes, rushning beat,...
Sports: only have 1 sports game..International Superstar Soccer but it(the SNES version) is the best 16-bit soccer game ever

I liked the snes, for so many reasons, but to me the genny was a better console, with alot of great games, unlike the snes, which again IMO had alot of crap games, but a few good ones, and they were really good, i.e chrono trigger, ff2+3, both secret of evermore and mana, I mean to me the genny was where it was, but I can still remember playing super metroid, that game kicked soooo much ass, the intro was like a movie... wow. But the genny still holds a special place in my heart, possibly because I remember the first christmas I got it, and it came with altered beast... And hearing the guy say "Rise from your grave"..... wow what an arcade port.... sweeeeeeeeet.
And let me not leave out the tg-16, unfortunately I never got one when I was younger, but I do have one now, and its awesome, but I don't have enough "experience" on that system to rate it, but anyways, thats my two cents on genny and snes, and tg...

I'd go for the Genesis. If you took away the RPGs Snes is inferior to the other systems. The only thing I feel the Genesis was missing is a lot of good RPGs. Turbo Grafx 16 comes in a close second with all it's great shooters and RPGs

The Genesis / MegaDrive is FAR superior to the SNES / Super Famicom. Let's compare the specs.

MegaDrive: CPU is MC68000. Very efficient chip, running at a blazing 7.6 MHz. On a full 16-bit bus, so there is no bottleneck.

SFC: CPU is a cheap 65c816 chip, so bad you'd find it for sale at Radio Shack in the spare parts department.. @ approx. 2.6 and 3.5 MHz speeds .. on 8-bit bus, making data transfer painfully slow.

MegaDrive: ROM access can occur while the machine is working due to DMA (Direct memory access). ROM can be copied into RAM WITHOUT consulting the CPU, leaving it to keep procesing game data instead.

SFC: ROM access can only occur when the CPU is not busy, causing lag. ROM reads are also abysmally slow due to the fact that all data MUST pass from ROM to the CPU (on a crippled bus), THEN to the memory. And it must wait until the CPU is finished with any processing it is doing.

MegaDrive: 512 Color palette, Great for normal games, but looks terrible in the Sega CD video clips. But, the SFC never had a CD component (officially released, anyway.)

SFC: approx. 32,000 color palette, far superior .. but not really necessary, as sprite based games don't NEED such a wide range of colors .. The SFC does technically have the lead here, though.

MegaDrive: High-speed Zilog Z80 CPU @ 4 MHz handles sound. That's right, 4 MHz, exceeding the max speed of the MAIN CPU of the SFC. And this is just for sound processing. Add to this a high quality yamaha YM2612 chip, and you get awesome sound quality. The Z80 allows for quicker processing of sound data without burdening the main CPU, for more rapid and complex music and audio sampling.

SFC: Cheap sound hardware. The music did sound decent, but it had nowhere near the clarity of the MD's. Also, due to slow sound processing, music could not be terribly complex, so generally you'd just hear a main melody, no background elements to the music in most cases.

MegaDrive: Backward-compatible with Sega's previous machine, the Sega Master System. All that needed to be done was to initiate a software switch or pull a pin high or low on the cartridge slot (and rearrange the data/address lines), to play SMS titles. This is why the power base works so well .. all it needs to do is swap a few leads around.

SFC: The CPU is backward compatible with the NES .. as though Nintendo originally intended to make this machine able to run original NES/Famicom titles. Then they seem to have just abandoned that idea by using sound and video hardware 100% INcompatible with the NES/Famicom software library. Yet, even with all the more advanced parts they added, they kept the abysmal CPU. Cost cutting measures, anyone? .. This is why the NES adapters (super 7, I think one is called?) for this machine have the vital parts of a NES built into them for compatibility. It's just a NES in a cartridge.

I'd call this an open-and-shut case. ;)

Don't get me wrong though. I do love some SNES games. Not a lot, but a few of them are great. I like Mario World, All Stars, Raiden (though it doesn't live up to the arcade version), Mortal Kombat 3, and to an extent, Starfox. There are just so many more games I enjoy for the MD, plus these games are faster and more engaging due to the superior hardware, which I also favor due to its design and selection of parts.

looks like something's wrong with the tables in this thread. Then I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Seems the forum software hiccupped. Looking at the code, it seems Zubiac666's "clearly SNES" post is written twice in the code, but only appears once in the thread. Coding is messed up. But it only happens rarely, so it has to be something that's rarely used.

I have seen this happen a few times and only on this forum. I've been trying to find what is causing it by looking at the code of this page. Maybe shed some light on this weird forum-screwing bug...

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!

In Zubiac666's post above, he accidentally caused the forum software to think a comment was closing prematurely.

When he wrote:

-->

The forum wasn't designed to um, how do I explain it? Let's say if the Webmaster were to do one thing. And this one thing will fix this. Just do this one simple thing, and it will be fixed permanently on every page it ever happened on. I just tested it in another thread (That allows editing so I could fix it afterwards) and it worked perfectly. Do this one thing:

Tell the forum software, add a character replacement into their listing for the > character
Make the software change it to >

I'm sure the Webmaster will understand what I mean, if he doesn't, have him email me. But this will fix it! And no longer will someone like Zubiac666 accidentally inadvertently cause the page to mess up.

I really can't say...like em all.

Most playable system, though, is the SNES, with its nicely done Mode 7 graphics. Since that's the system with Super Metroid, Super CV 4, and lots of other classics, I'd have to choose it.

Not voting though -- the PC-Engine isn't quite complete unless you consider the CD-ROM system for it, that right there makes it worthwhile! Not to mention the port of Street Fighter 2 is the best.

It's hard to pick one, but I would say Genesis for these reasons...

-I liked the controller better(6-button version)
-Sonic series
-Streets of Rage series
-Columns(sp?)
-Phantasy Star series
-Sports games just seemed better on the Genesis IMO
-The Sega CD with Sonic CD
-The 32X with Virtua Fighter(it's not so great now, but I used to like it a lot)

Really 16-bit video gaming really has to be the best!!!

As much as I love the Genny, I have to give the nod to the SNES.

Games like -

Zelda: Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Super CastleVania IV
Mortal Kombat 2 & 3 (better versions IMO than the Genny had)
Killer Instinct
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Final Fantasy 3/6

... and many more make the SNES one of my all time favorite consoles.

I'll take snes any day.
Genesis just doesnt have the magic. The snes has a certain quality, hard to describe, part of it's in the music and sfx, part of it's in the incredibly superior controller......
I'll put Snes first, TG16 second, and genesis 3rd.If there were no snes, i think tg16 could've kicked the living crap out of genesis. IMO, genesis is a pathetic pile of garbage. Yes, i have one, but only for games i can't get on any other system, and if it werent for sega cd and 32x, i wouldnt have many genesis-series games at all....

I had to pick the TG-16.

It had CD support first and the Hu-Cards could be played in the Turbo Express (if you could afford one). I know the SNES had the Super Gameboy adapter but that is playing the portable on the home system not the home system game on the portable.

I remember that I told people a lot at school to kiss my ass, that the sega fucking genesis was the best! I mean, sonic ruled! Plus I had mortal kombat, and my third game for the system was a crappy Mick and Mack Global Gladiators game, but it got better from there eventually :-P I grabbed toe jam and earl 2 and it became real real real fun! Then landstalker... which is the most badass action rpg ever!

I may also have to give some credits to the SNES, because I often found myself playing my friends alot, I thought super mario world was pretty cool. I had another friend who owned an SNES as well, and we played DKC a LOT.

But later today I'll be able to give my opinion on the SNES, because im looking for one at the flea :-) Wish me luck!

When I was a kid I owned all 3 systems, SNES was my favorite though.

Genesis>SNES>TG16

Still if only NEC gave it better suport... things might have been different.

I see no, NeoGeo in the poll either still i can under stand 'due to it's price tag at the time ;)

I bought all three as soon as they came out. Let me just say that SNES is what Genesisn't! Although not a bad system, I never truely loved the Genesis very much. I'll put the SNES at the top, followed by the TG-16, with the Genny in third place. If the Neo-Geo was in the poll, the Gen would be in fourth place.

Thats a tough one; I'm just gonna have to go with SNES because its all I really got to know that well. I hear the TG16 has some hits I can't wait to find out for myself though. Genesis I only recently found out about. Might and Magic 2 is on track to become my favourite 16 bit game ever, plus Phantasy Star 2-4, shining Series, Rocket Knight, Starflight, and golden ax have me in awe. I do love Secret of Mana though I gotta tell ya, plus Ogre battle, Lufia, Zelda 3, FF4, and Legend of the Mystical Ninja.

1. Genesis
2. SNES
3. TurboGrafx

Will we ever see games or a system war like the ones we saw in the 16-bit heyday? Probably not, but I can dream...

Much like so many others stated, you're more prone to picking the system that you had as a kid. I had a Genesis, and that's what I chose. But I am going to try to explain my answer.

Nintendo loves to make money porting their older games to newer consoles. Because of this, many of the SNES's marquee games are available on newer systems:

All Mario games, Zelda LTTP, BOF 1+2, Lost Vikings, R&R Racing, etc.

Final Fantasy games and Chrono Trigger are available on PSX.

This makes SNES less of a "must-have" system for the classic gamer. If it were not for the availability of so many ports on the GBA and PSX, I might say SNES. But the Genesis had a lot of great lesser-known games that never saw a port. Sega only ports over it's mega hits, and does so poorly. Have you ever played a really spot-on Sega compilation? I haven't.

I also love all the arcade ports that the Genesis has. Like someone said earlier, if you were into the arcade scene in the late 80's and early 90's, you know what I mean. But the Genesis also has some great RPGs like Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, which to this day is a little-known title. One of my favorite games of all time is StarFlight, and the Genesis was also home to the first Star Control title.

I have to gove the TurboGrafx it's respect though. I would be more into it, but it is a hard ssystem to collect for due to the lack of availability of games. Maybe other people have a diferent experience, but I never find games in the wild, and have to depend on eBay and DP for TG16 games that I'm looking for. It is a great system though with a lot of great arcade titles. Galaga 88/90 is one of the best title upgrades/sequels I've ever played.

Remember, Sega does what Nintendon't.

I had an SNES as a youth, saved up for a year to get that thing when I was 10 years old. Never really had enough money to buy the "big guns" like Super Punch Out!, Super Metroid, DKC2/3, the RPGS, etc.

I had a blast with Mega Man X, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Mario World, SM All Stars and Street Fighter II Turbo.

I wasn't into arguing with anyone about the quality since my cousin, who I looked up to at the time, had a genesis, and I thought that it was more "powerful" than the SNES. All I know is that I loved the sonic games and couldn't play them.

All of my other friends had either both systems (snes or genesis) or Turbo Grafx and nothing else.

So I got to play the best of all systems, like many people did.

Now... I am not such a big fan of the SNES. I have a blast playing on my CDX, I love Snatcher on the Sega CD, Moonwalker, Sonic, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage, etc etc. I also picked up a Duo-R to play Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, which is an awesome game.

I still voted for the Genesis though, just because Sega really tried so hard to win over gamers, and ended up getting the short end of the stick.

Super Nintendo! Some of my all time favorite games are on that system...as well as a ton of other great titles. I like the Genesis, but only for certain games. As for the TG16...I've only played one game on it, and that was import - Gradius on the PC-Engine.

I love the games for this system when EA started making game for it, like Starflight and Might and Magic, the Immortal, Shadow of the Beast and Populas.

Back in the day it was SNES all the way, in fact it was Nintendo all the way. I had a hardcore Nintendo fan and I burned w/hate for Sega. The Ironic part of it all was when the 32bit gen rolled around I turned my back on Nintendo because I felt like Nintendo had turned it's back on it's fans and everything turned hardcore Sega.

These days I have all 3 systems and I enjoy them all equally for different reasons.

The poll results look like a presidential election with a strong third-party showing. 2016 maybe? :D

I'm still playing all three. My favorite is the TG16. I have the TG16, PC Engine, Turbo Duo, and the Turbo Express. My PC Engine gets the most play time. Love my TG16 stuff! The arcade shooters is what keeps me with a Turbo pad in hand. There are loads of great games on this system that are still fun to play. Back when these systems were hot, the Genesis and the TG16 is where I had the most of my gaming fun. The SNES, for some reason held third place.
