Well, a few nights ago I bravely (stupidly?) ventured into Level 8 in Lord of the Dungeon. I'd never done this before. Then...
Within a few steps I encountered a few Djinn, and PyroHydras. Tough, to be sure, but, my six characters were able to deal with them.
Then I encountered the 8 Dark Lords.
Naturally, they got to strike first. In the first round of battle they zestfully drained the first 2 characters of some Life Levels (energy drain), took control of another, damned another, and fried 2 others. You see, these things are able to cast ANY OF THE MAGICAL AND CLERICAL SPELLS! This includes the 6th Level Magical spell FLAVULEDIR, which does, oh, a mere 175 points of damage.
My 35th Level Monk couldn't dispel them. My 37th Level Hirebrand couldn't even hit them, not even with a +3 sword.
In the second round of battle, the only 2 surviving characters were completely destroyed. It wasn't even close. Those 2 characters had about 400 Hit Points. AD&D fans- consider that...
Could that encounter have been the "ultimate purpose?" 8 Dark Lords in Level 8...
