View Full Version : Completing Zelda without dying

Ive noticed when playing Zelda 1 for NES and Zelda 3 for SNES the game keeps track of how many times you have died via a number at the character selection screen.
Has anyone completed the game without dying (or saving after you died?) Does anything special happen?

I think I have done it by the GBA Version but nothing happen.
I hear or read somewhere, that you get a special Endscreen by the GameBoy Version. Zelda DX - Links Awakening and maybe by the other GB Version too Zelda - Links Awakening.
I think I have seen the endscreen too somewhere.
But by the SNES Version is nothing I think.

There's no reason to do it in the first Zelda, but there IS a reason in Zelda 3. I've done it. I just don't remember. The one I DO remember is that, if you complete Link's Awakening (GB) without dying, the ending changes slightly, and you see
VERY MINOR SPOILER
Marin floating around on wings instead of the seagull.

i've done it (it's actually very easy, i think i never died in a battle in zelda 3 in my whole life, only due to my own stupidity , falling down and such things) but as far as i can remember there wasn't any difference

A friend and I made it through the first Quest of the first game w/o dying, and it doesn't do anything different. Still kind of fun to be able to say we did it I guess.

There is a special ending on Links Awakening DX, and I think Wind Waker.

I have done it on the N64 Ocarina of Time twice.......granted, I saved a lot and if I did actually die I would reload my saved, but I have a game file that has zero deaths which was all I wanted.

I've beaten Zelda 1 in under 50 minutes without dying, and nothing special happens, except opening up the second quest.

I beat wind waker without dying... still wonder what it looks like when you die in that game. I'm sure most of you have done this as well.

How in hades can that be done? I'm not doubting you Portnoyd, but I can't believe people beat that game that fast without saves and such.

The one up on GameFAQs is outdated, and I can't get those idiots to upload the new version. This is the path I follow. No, I don't have under 50 recorded. I have under an hour (57 min) in some video format on a friend's PC, but it's sloppy as all hell (I beat Ganon with, sigh, half a heart left). And after seeing the SMB/SMB3 god attempts (fake or not), I feel ashamed posting something so sloppy. The video also uses the gambling game (the path shown on gamefaqs), which is hit or miss, literally. If anyone wants to see it in the interim between making a new one (hopefully soon), I can post it, but it's big (90 megs). As you may have guessed, I know dick about video compression.
Here's some tips:
1. Don't die, ever.
2. Only get what you need. Only kill what needs to be killed. (Something I haven't even perfected)
3. You can blow through level 2 first, and come out with 3-4 extra keys. (Enter, go right, and then up until the boss). If you kill everything in each one of those rooms, you'll get those keys). These keys simplify later dungeons, as you can go through the path I laid out, grabbing keys in your way, and never running out until you get the A key in level 8. (There is some thought of mine that going to level 8 earlier can save some time by removing the need for keys, however, you need the bow & arrow to do so. My path won't give you both until right before level 5. At that point, you're better off using your supply of keys wisely, as your lower amount of hearts and weaker sword will slow you down a touch on blue Darknuts. Also, at that point, if you eter level 8, you should finish it. I wouldn't want to waste my time doing the 4head Gleeok with the white sword. But I digress).
4. Can you kill Darknuts with ease? It's the difference between under 50 and under 55.
5. It'll take some tries to get the path down. The more you play this game, the better you'll get at memorizing the layout. When I first tried to do it for speed, I did it 2 1/2 hours. From there, I went down to 1 hour 10 min, then 57, 54, 51:30, and now 49:28, over the course of 2 years and 20 attempts. I just got used to the layouts and where to bomb, what direction to go, and so on.

I died once, Something about a really large pig in town? I was carrying it and dropped it, and got pissed, and tried beating the crap out of it, and it killed me.
That's the way I remember it anyways :)
