What in your opinion is the best Playstation domestic shooter? I'm sure the import library boasts some real gems, but I'd like to get an idea of the stateside releases first. This is 2-D shooters only (which includes 2-D shooters comprised of pologons like Einhander.)

i vote einhander. some of the games you have listed kind of suck like xevious and in the hunt and sol divide. some of the games like gekioh and strikers 1945 and gunbird are pretty good on the playstation but much better on the saturn.

My personal FAVORITE is Raiden Project, but I'm partial to Raiden and especially vertical shooting games. I don't think it's the best PSone game... just my fave.

Sol Divide does suck. I haven't played Xevious yet but I've heard it sucks, too. I actually liked In The Hunt, especially the graphics, but it does have some atrocious slowdown.

1. R-Type Delta
2. Darius Gaiden...urr...G Darius (I knew that. No...really...What???)
3. Einhander
4. Philosoma (highly under rated)
5. RayStorm (not a great shmup by any stretch, but dangit I had fun with this one.)

Honorable mentions: Gunbird...urr...Moble Light Farce and Strikers 1945 (II). Gunbird, great game, terrible port further gutted for US consumption.
Strikers II, fantastic game, but you need Tate mode to truly appreciate it. (Peep the import Saturn rev.)

In The Hunt is stunning to look at (these are the people who broke off from Irem and created Metal Slug) but neither of the home versions play very well. Pitty that, as it's a pretty fun game but the slowdown in both versions kill it.

Speaking of rough home ports, I think you missed Viewpoint. That's ok as I strongly doubt anyone will vote that #1. (Though I like that port a ton, don't ask me why.)

Oh and if you like Raiden, check Gekioh. It's inspired by Raiden to the point of out and out stealing, but it's fun if you're in to that sort of thing.

I'd have to agree. Einhander is awesome. Plus, the majority of the other games are available on other platforms, particularly on the Saturn. So, einhander provides a unique experience not available elsewhere. Raystorm and Raycrisis are also great shmups.

Hey, you forgot Space Shot!

R-Type Delta comes first for me, followed by Einhander, G Darius, ThunderForce V Perfect System (I have not yet played the Saturn version), and Philosoma (CW's right - it's a great game and is so underrated it's not funny). Most of the rest listed are quite good too.

Oh yeah - Darius Gaiden never made it out for the PS in the US, but it did come out for the Saturn here. G Darius did make it here though, which is the one I'm guessing you meant to list.

er... imports, anyone?
add these to that list:
gradius gaiden (ps one exclusive)
zanac x zanac

geppy-x

Sorry Greg, he's only doing US releases right now. But Gradius Gaiden is the best PS shmup I've played, period. I have yet to try the others, though...

If you want to get into the imports, Zanac X Zanac owns, as does the port of Soukyugurentai.

I would definitely go with R-Type Delta.

Warning, though: RTD is not for those easily frustrated :)

I voted R-Types, but I'm not sure if that should be on the list. It's a compilation. If we were just talking about individual games, then I would have cast my vote for R-Type Delta.

... I haven't played that game in ages. :)

I've got G. Darius, Thunderforce V, Raycrisis, R-Types, and Gekioh. I vote for Gekioh because the others are too hard for me to make much progress in. Therefore, Gekioh is a lot more fun, despite the inability to save your best scores...

Damn it felt good when I picked Einhander and it was the majority vote.

I still have a sealed PS copy of the game Einhander..(never opening)

waaaah! lol. actually, it's almost sorta lame to exclude imports! imagine trying to do a great saturn or dc shooter list and passing up the import selection... lessee, now...10 good US saturn shooters (crickets chirping)...

the ps one still has a bad rep as a system that "can't do 2D", and some so-called "diehard" shooter fans out there have never played many, or compare some ps shooters to their saturn counterparts. while there are some GREAT polygon-based ps shooters (einhander, omega boost, & r-type delta, which i finally finished- what a trip that last stage was, lol) , once you see gradius gaiden in action, or track down philosoma cheap, or hell, FIND a raiden project and fire up raiden II, any arguments are silenced with a big ass explosion or two, lol...

R-Type Delta does it for me. It just feels so right. Not only would I rank this as my favourite PSX shooter, but one my favourite shooter's ever!!!

So true... the PSX can't match the Saturn when it comes to 2-D power, but that certainly doesn't mean it can't pump out a great 2-D shooter nevertheless.

I gained a new respect for the PSX with R-Type Delta... a shooter doesn't have to be 2-D to be awesome... a 2-D style shooter with polygonal graphics can be just as good as a sprite-based shooter, and oftentimes even better. So many lighting effects! So much stuff going on!

That being said, my favorite shooters of all time are Battle Garrega, Batsugun, and Radiant Silvergun (though the later does have a great combination of 2-D and 3-D graphics)

I still recall the first time I saw Gradius Gaiden in action... my jaw hit the floor. To this day I cannot understand why it was never released in the US. Okay, I can, but I still can't believe it.

Gradius Gaiden did for Gradius what Symphony of the Night did for Castlevania.

and imagine if konami had sense enough to add it to gradius III & IV like they should have...

Hey, you forgot Space Shot!

Has anyone here actually played this one? It's got quite possibly the worst engrish ever, worse than Zero Wing. And really bad FMV.

I voted Einhander as best because I think it represents the system best, both gameplay-wise and graphically. I doesn't hurt that it's good game, too. ;)

*sigh* they didn't listen to my Gradius Ultra Pack idea, the bastards. That would have been fantastic.

Oob - I own a copy of Space Shot. :D Terrible FMV, horrible Engrish - but not a bad shmup by any means. I pull it out and fire it up every so often.
