First, I am interested in buying a Turbo Duo, but I want to know if there are model variations that I need to be aware of. I would like to have a 'region free' setup for both cards and cds. Anyway I know there are many different models (colors??) so what is the most capable version (accessories needed?)
Ok the second question is about the Mega CD. I have a US Sega CDX and I know I can play MD carts with a simple convertor but what about Mega CD games? Will they work or do I need something extra?

Here's the breakdown of Turbo Duos.
Just get a Duo-R or Duo-RX (the white ones). Those will play all Japanese Hucards, and US/JPN CDs, and SCDS. Then an arcade card if you want to play the 2-3 decent ACDs.
If you want a multiregion machine, then get ready to wait. CDs and SCDs will play on regardless of region, but Hucards will not. Converters are also few and far between, and run a lot more than buying a card-only system.
THe SegaCDX I hear has some weird compatibility issues. Might want to do some research before purchasing a converter, as I don't think all of them work with it.

There are NO region free Duos in regards to huCards, but all Duos play pretty much ALL Duo CD games.
As for Sega CDX systems, I have one, and I have yet to have been able to find a convertor that will let me play Mega CDs on it. I think we're out of luck there. Something about how the design changed for the CDX and no one bothered to make one compatible with that particular bios.

For the sega cd..........
You can do one of two things........
Buy a mega cd rom with a megadrive...
or get a first gen Sega CD and use the import key cart.
the import key wont work with the newest sega cd firmware (cdx included)
Yes,,,,,, A DUO / DUO R and DUO Rx can play american carts with a converter. you have to ground out a wire on one of the chips in the unit.
ive done it many times.
So if you have an import unit, that has a cdrom hooked up...
you can play everything but supergrafx carts and pcfx cd's...
You will only need the security bit tool to open the unit, a soldering iron with solder .. and a piece of thin single strand wire shielded.
about an inch or more long.
