In the day, I owned half a dozen or so EA Genesis games (Populous is the only one which comes to mind right away) which had a notch cut out of the side covered by a little yellow cover. If jimmied sufficently, one could expose what looked like a card edge by removing the little yellow cover.

What the hell was this for, and did it ever get used?

Best guess, is it was something to make EA carts stand out. Which they do, because they'll quite taller than most Genny games. *shrug*

I always assumed it was a common EA cart that could support a battery. Some carts had battery backups and some didn't. I never took a vice grips to it to find out though. I guess I could afford to rip up a 49 cent sports game now and find out.
