I was surprised to see that the auction's still open...looks like there's three more of these.

Anyhow, here's a brief history of this item and Zillion.

Sometime before 1986 a laser tag type game had caught on in Japan; this would eventually have its own animation series and after that a game, the hard, horrible to control but still underrated Master System game "Zillion."

The cup in this auction was likely based off the animation series, as the game wasn't that popular (and there's no Sega logo on the bottom...I believe that if you could find out who put out the laser tag game, or the animation series, you'd find a match).

Interesting find! Quite cheap, too. Grab yourself a Zillion TeaCup today! :P~

As obscure as this series was (even in Japan) back then it amazes me how much merchandise was still made. There's an action figure + transforming robot bike boxed set floating around out there that goes for big bucks if I recall right, it's from Zillion II.

I know that the cartoon was translated/dubbed and brought stateside, I've seen tapes in rental outlets years ago.

My friend owns all the tapes of Zillion brought stateside. Each one has 1 episode on them although one is an OVA movie that sucked), and there was only about 6 tapes released total. I'd really like to see the rest of the series, because it was really good.

Just 1 episode? That's amazing. :) With all the commercial breaks cut a half hour show goes down to twenty minutes.. you'd think there would be 2 per tape. Or are the episodes themselves an hour long?

You might also like to know the SMS light phaser is based on the Zillion gun. Opa Opa was a character on the Series too.

Yeah, I saw both of 'em playing Zillion (emulation...grr) the other day :)

By the way, I must say having you on the boards here was a significant contributing factor to my deciding to post this ;)

They're releasing the first half of the anime on DVD in Japan around March next year. 30+ episodes in the series.

PErsonally, I thought both Zillion games were pretty damn good. I liked 1 a bit better than 2.

The Zillion games were both badass.

Opa-Opa was so goony in that cartoon. Its like, he didn't do anything but float there, and no one ever said anything about it. Good to see they're coming out on DVD in japan though-here's hoping some american company re-picks em up.
