The DP Random Nintendo-favoring Game Generator (tm) has chosen StarFox. Actually it chose StarFox 64 but let's open this up to the series in general - even the unrleased SNES sequel, if you'd like!

I still enjoy the original StarFox and like it the most of all the games in the series, even despite the terrific graphic overhaul the N64 gave the game and again with the GameCube StarFox Adventures (which added all kinds of new elements to the familiar gameplay). It's a bit crude-looking by today's standards but that graphic style is retro in its own way, I dig it.

What are your thoughts on the game? The series? What was your favorite? Write your own mini-review of the series HERE.

DP Guide sez:

StarFox 64 (N64, by Nintendo) $13/R1 +
Gray cart. Rated KA. Sequel to the SNES hit Star Fox. You control Fox McCloud as he and his team of pilots take on the might of the evil ANDROSS. Most of the levels include both an "on rails" shooting mode followed by a "full range" mode allowing you to fly about the stage in full
freedom. Also included is a multi player versus mode and co op mode. Also one of the first games to have the rumble support and the game for a time did include the pack as well. Released 07/01/97. #NUS-NFXE-USA.

StarFox (SNES, by Nintendo) $5/R1 +
Developed by Argonaut. The start of the popular StarFox series was right here. The first game to use the FX Chip, the on-cart 3D graphics chip used in Stunt Race and Dirt Trax FX. Released 1993. #SNS-FO-USA.

StarFox Super Weekend Cartridge (SNES, by Nintendo) $200/R9
Developed by EAD. Like the Donkey Kong Competition cart, this cartridge was used for the Starfox Super Weekend competition, where players tried to score the most points. Winners at each Blockbuster store won a specific bomber jacket. After that, the cart was only offered t #SNS-FU-USA.

Anyone have any info on the unreleased starfox 2 for SNES? I remember Nintendo Power hyping it up a long time ago in the SNES days.... I always thought it looked cool from what they showed...

Did this just end up being Starfox 64? Anyone know? Why was it cancelled? Especially of the hotness of the first?

Man I loved SNES Starfox. I didn't like the N64 version so much.

The in-cockpit levels were the best.
A Super Advantage, a Cold One and Starfox is heaven. hmm ^_^

I've thrown out all of my Nintendo Power collection saving only the comic issues, the Starfox comic was double plus good++.

It didn't become Starfox 64, the proto was actually discovered about a year ago, and dumped.

Here ya go!

Note: it's pretty buggy, but a few people have gotten pretty far with it - I know TheRedEye has seen more of the game than I ever have!

Enjoy.

I LOVED the original Starfox. I remember plugging my SNes sound into my boombox and cranking this game. The graphics were quite impressive for the time. What's ironic is I detest railed shooters, but Starfox for some reason won me over. It was easily one of my favorites on the SNes.

These are some of my favorite games, hands down. I love this (two-part) series.. I hope Nintendo knows what the HELL it's doing handing the series over to Namco.

SNES Starfox was awesome
but I even more liked the N64 version
it has (still) jawdropping graphics nowadays and some of the best controlls in a 3d shooter ever
both truely timeless classics

I always got the feeling that StarFox was basically just a graphics showcase game... Although the game had a decent amount of 3D going on, the "on-rails" bit sort of turned everything into Space Harrier. The game is still fun (After all, I always liked Space Harrier), but at the time, I was expecting something more revolutionary out of 3D gaming. I actually preferred the way Cybermorph (for the Jaguar) did things.

I liked StarFox 64 better than the SNES version, The "free range" stuff seemed sort of tacked on, but being able to do stuff like loops and turn-arounds was a nice addition.

Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time. For about a month or two after I got my 64 that was the only game I owned for it, and I played it religiously, going through it on average, 3 times a day. It's just really well made, and is one of those games where you just want to keep trying to beat your high score. Plus the Star Wolf team was badass.

SNES Star Fox was pretty sweet too, I played that alot...but nowhere near as much as I did the 64 one. And the second game, I'm still waiting for ZSNES to release a new version that runs the game right. I hate SNES9x.

Oh, StarFox, how do I love thee? Too many damn ways.

I'm a sucker for StarFox on the SNES, but I absolutely LOVED the 64 incarnation. That game was stuck in my 64 until I thought the contacts had melted together. I LOVED it when I first got my 64, and I still LOVE it today. Now I have to find a way to play it, as my 64 is currently out of reach (divorced parents, it's over at my dad's house).

Now I have to break back out my SNES and StarFox, Uniracers, Super Mario World... too many damn good games...

Count me as one of those guys who still absolutely LOVES SNES Starfox but kind of gives a lukewarm ok to the N64 version.

I don't know what it is.. maybe it's the MUSIC of the SNES Starfox that makes it better for me. The main theme of that tune is pure Space Epic genius. I also dug the on rails gameplay.. It scripted things enough (especially on the 2nd beginner stage) to make the shooting events exciting. I'm not sure how it would have worked out as a free flying shooter. Anyway, it works for the game so I guess that's all that counts.

Who else besides me is crossing their fingers for a GBA starfox? :D

Starfox... man, that name brings back some great memories from my childhood, and among them is my expression at the VERY fubar new dimension stage, and me dancing like a crack monkey after finally beating the game on the third route. It was one of the most frequently played games on my precious SNES! And I also loved Starfox64. A very solid title indeed, and a frustrating one. I got medals on the expert mode... twice. I accidentally deleted all my data, but I recovered everything. Booyah. 8-)

I even remember seeing the Super Weekend Cartridge version at Wal-Mart. I am a Starfox whore. :D

I used to like to take a lot of, um, "treats" and played a lot of SNES Starfox. The 64 version was fun, but really I only got it becuase it came with a free rumble pak.

The namco one can't be as crummy as the Star Fox Adventures game was. That one proved that star fox should stay to the shooter genre. My only concern is that they may put too much emphasis on foot moving between vehicles, which, as star fox 64's battle mode proved, was less then effective.

Speaking of which, I got so damn good at the SF64 game that I can pretty much plow anyone who takes me on in battle mode. I think the only time I ever lost in all the years since the game came out was when my 3 friends teamed up to take me out, mostly by making sure I wouldn't get the kill on any of them that was near death. This strategy was adopted after they realized that taking me on 3 at a time was just ending with me coming out fine, and with 3 more points to victory. I'd love to play someone who was really good at the game to see how well I can measure up, but in the meantime, I am star fox god.

Yeah they never released it. I heard that they had a new chipset "FX2" that was pushing the 3D graphics abit farther. They were planing on useing the FX2 chip to make 3d games for the Snes but then they scrapped the Idea to go with the N64.

They did have some Code for it infact the ROM has been on the internet for a while. Looks like they were trying to have the ships change Ala' Macross for some FPS action.

I got the snes Star Fox earlier this year. It is a great game, but the framerate leaves a bit to be desired at times. Perhaps I was spoiled by absolutely dominating Star Fox 64 years earlier.

As for Star Fox 2 info, here is a link..

I plan on putting screenshots there next week.

I think they used the FX2 in other SuperFX games though... I'm quite certain that Stunt Race FX and Doom both use it, but I'm not sure which others.

Dirt Race FX used the FX chip too.

Starfox rocked, i loved playing this and trying to get onto the different paths to make it to Venom. never was really good at it. Got lucky once hitting venom hard on Starfox 64 playing it for like 2 hours stright and living off Pepsis to get me through the task.
