View Full Version : Game Gear sound issue

I have a game gear here that has very little sound. I do get sound from the speaker, but it's VERY faint. It's so faint that when you pull it away from your year you can't hear it anymore. The headphones jack is working but also pretty low. I took it apart and didn't see anything immediately wrong. The speaker connection is good and the volume control seems to at least look proper. Is there any common problem like this that I don't know about?
Does adjusting the volume knob change anything at all? That would be the first thing I'd check, just test the resistance on it while adjusting the knob. Otherwise, I would say that there's something wrong with the amp, although I've never troubleshot a GG, so I dunno what chip that would be, or what else would cause that.

Hrm... beyond my current skills (can't solder). The headphone sound is way low, too, so I assume I'd have to replace more than just the one mentioned. It may not be worth it. Nice tutorial, though. Is there a converter to play GG games on something else?
Heh... come on... learn to solder... it'll be useful in the future, and I hardly call 2 wires soldering :P. Just let the iron get hot, make sure the tip is clean, touch one wire of the capacitor and push in the opposite direction, do the same for the other side, and it's out. Or you could just rip the capacitor off, then pull the legs out individually. Then just heat the bottom again and slide one leg of the new one through, then the other... all done :) .

My Nomad seems to have a lot of background noise (hiss) in both the internal speaker, and headphones. I wonder if it suffers a similar issue to the GG one? It's not interefering with play bad, but it's disappointing when you expect crisp stereo sound to get this non stop 'tape' like hiss.

I'm a bit too preoccupied to learn to solder at the moment. There are a lot of things I need to do first. Soldering would be WAY low on the priority list.
