How can I fix a button that works intermittently? Like what cleaning liquid should I use inside the controller and where should I scrub? :)

I clean mine with rubbing alcohol, although any residue-free cleaner would probably work fine.

Open the controller & examine the rubber contact pads. Make sure they're not torn, as that can cause intermittant operation too. Other than that, just lightly clean the black-dot on the inside of the rubber pads (don't apply too much force, and only make 1 or 2 passes since you don't want to scrub the carbon off), and clean the contact surfaces on the circuit board until they shine again. Cotton swabs work well for this.

The controller case, buttons can be cleaned with any general purpose cleaner, like 409, Simple Green, etc.

I'm not sure if you've ever seen the inside of a NES controller, but it'll all make sense once it's apart.
