I picked Wario Ware for the sheer fact that it can be picked up and played, put down, and picked back up later on without any need to keep track of what you were doing when you stopped.
Even a short 5-minute session can be fulfilling. It's all about the high scores, just like the games of the old arcade.

Going to do a write in vote.
Wind Waker while not quite a five star game, is still amazing and best game I've played this year...
Cheers,

I also reccommend Mario Kart: Double Dash.
Great game, LAN possibilities are incredible, Double Dash feature and number of hidden items is great!

No need to write in... I'll accept that as a (grumble grumble) late nomination. Added.

Well, I've played both VJ and SSV, and I was thoroughly impressed by both of them. But the thing is, I've JUST played them. I own neither of them. Teh winner?
WARIO WARE INC.
I swear, this was the only thing jammed in my GBA all throughout the summer. :D

Viewtiful Joe for being 2D in a 3D world.

Wario Ware. The most addictive, fun, and replayable game in awhile.
Also, It wasn't shoved down my throat through marketing/advertising/Promotions. (Don't take that out of context)

Whoa, whoa, hold the phone a second. I have a hard time believing that Samurai Shodown V deserves a nomination for the best game of the year. Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is far more worthy of the nomination. Insomniac put a LOT of effort into that game and they deserve to be recognized for their hard work.

Sorry, SS5 is the best fighting game to come out in years, best Neo Geo game to come out in years, best arcade game to come out in years, and easily the best game of the year for me, definately got the most time playing of any new game.

And the winner is...Viewtiful Joe!
It's got all the classic 2D action one could ever hope for, and that's good enough in itself. But what makes VJ shine is all the new tech that's gone into the original formula, thanks to the processing power that only modern consoles like the GameCube can provide. Special tweaks like the time-shift effects, the beautiful stage designs and the absolutely killer animation style make for a game that's both impressive to play and a true experience -- which is something the Cube really needs right now.
Congrats to Capcom, and let's hope there's a sequel in the works!

You're not just saying this as a Neo-Geo fan, are you?
I'd like to ask just what seperates Samurai Shodown 5 from the ten million other fighting games on the Neo-Geo, but I'll do it on the main section of the forum.

The only problem is that I just played Ratchet and Clank 2 last week. There was no way I could have honestly added to the list before that time.
In any case, thanks for adding this fantastic game to the list of best titles released this year!

SS5? Sorry, VF4Evo is the best fighting game out at the moment. No F-Zero GX? No Prince of Persia? Hmmm....

Hafta say Wario Ware for this. KOTOR was cool, but the game portion got repetitive for me. Wind Waker got boring due to heavy push of sailing (though if the sailing got trimmed way down it'd easily win). Viewtiful Joe had a stylin' approach but on the inside was a clone of all the games I played in the 90's on 16 Bit consoles only with better graphics.
Wario Ware came off with a fresh concept that doesn't get old. Quick easy games that get tossed at you. They make you want to keep going to see if you can get to the end. And when you do beat it you want to play it all over again just to get BETTER. No story or real plot. Just game play. As much as Nintendo has been mucking up with the Cube (IMO) they still have what it takes to make excellent 2D games.

No one nominated these games when the nomination thread was being circulated. I'd add them but at this point there are too many votes already cast to make them viable candidates.

I'll second that, out of all listed, (some I haven't played) Wind Waker was very enjoyable

Nope.
When it comes to overall presentation, character selection, gameplay, backgrounds, artwork, music, it's all SS5 for me.
VF is boring.

Forget all that other crap up there and go for VIEWTIFUL JOE. It's games like these that the gamecube needs to send the PS2 and XBOX RIGHT TO THE GRAVE, THE PS2 KILLED THE DREAMCAST AND I AM DOWNRIGHT PISSED AND NOW THE GAMECUBE WILL AVENGE THE GOD-LIKE SYSTEM.

Even if it's a little late to be a viable contender, my vote stands for SSV. Great game, earned every token I put into it. It's something different compared to every other fighter that has come out recently, and it's kept what really mattered in a good fighter: gameplay. And it's own special style of gameplay. Definately worth a play.

My vote goes to Wind Waker.
Viewtiful Joe hasn't captured me nearly as much as everybody else it seems (I'm not sure where I'd put it in a list of games - not top 3 though).
Wario Ware was a hard second place to choose, but once I'm done playing the mini games and unlocking stuff it's done. I'm still fascinated with Wind Waker.
