View Full Version : Would You Overbid A Friend?

Here's something I don't know if anyone's discussed before...if you went searching for something on eBay (or any auction site) and found it...but then saw that someone you knew was the high bidder, would you overbid them for the item? I don't know that many ebay IDs of people I know (obviously "digitpress" is Joe but that's one of the few) but of those few, I would probably try not to step on their toes. Of course, if I were the high bidder and they overbid me, then all bets are off...

I've seen people from the board occasionally on ebay. The ebay login was the same or very close to their DP login and I don't bid. Period. That's just me.

I outbid people from this board every year at CGE, so its no biggie. I guess I would. I will say congrats if they win though. Its no big deal if I lose to them but I will try to outbid them.
 May the better man win

Would I outbid someone whose name I simply recognize from DP? Sure. Would I bid against a friend? Of course not. That's just common courtesy.

I would outbid my grandma on a sentimental heirloom from her childhood.

I agree with that statement, and I follow by those rules as well.

I would outbid anybody if I wanted the object so bad.

I agree with that, unless that fellow Dper might have worked something out with me.... Now if it was Tynstar who is a friend of mine and a Dper, I would try to outbid him everytime :P
No just kidding :D

Bahaha.. there aren't too many material things I want that I'd ignore common courtesy for. If I recognized someone bidding on an item I wouldn't go after it regardless of how much of a friend we were. But if I had a particular dislike for that person I wouldn't think much of shanking them into a higher proxy bid.

Ive seen a couple of things that i wanted, but saw the the high bidder was a DP'er. I usually dont bid on them, unless i really want the item.

If its cheap enough and i really want it, I will try to outbid a friend. If its a DP'er... then yes, I will try to outbid them. Unless its the owner but i dont know his ebay name

I never bid on stuff that my friends are. I might make an exception if it's something I've been looking for for a long time and they say it's cool, though.

I'll ask you to edit that last comment and say something without such an rude comment next time.

Off of DP? Yeah. I've done that to Joe himself once or twice, and he's done it to me (though I doubt he knows my eBay handle).
Personal friend? No. That's just rude. Fortunately for me, none of my friends use eBay that much :)

Exactly. I've done the same many, many times with contacts and other likeminded C64 heads in Europe on a lot of cartridges. However as I've generally won most of them, they tend to back off whenever they see me as they don't think they can outbid me LOL
Which isn't always the case, but makes life easier for me. But not as if I don't help them out (many of them are part of cracking groups for example, and I supply originals and docs for release) or keep the machine alive...

Yeah, I have bid against a real-life friend (and won) once, and didn't feel bad about it, though he was jokinly mad about it, lol.
Anyone is free to bid on anything, at least that's the way I see it.

Pfft. I don't even like you guys, so piss off.
I don't have any friends, so I don't have to worry about outbidding them.
Lol!
j/k! You all rock.
Seriously, I never even pay attention to who I am bidding against...If I want something I'll just bid my highest snipe, and that's that. I think once or twice I found out I outbid a DPer after the fact. I mean, I felt sorry, but I guess I wanted the item pretty badly so I wasn't that sorry. If I don't want something that bad, I'll back off if I know them, I guess. If I want it really badly, like outrageously badly, (a rare situation indeed) I'd probably stop at no one.

I would. But I would not pay more for the item just to screw my friend. I have put bid people on the board at least once. I forgot who it was but it was for a Mario Lemieux Genesis hockey puck.

I know there are at least a couple people on this board that collect the same items, and I know that when they come up on eBay, usually if one sees the other bidding on it, they'll email the other person, and they'll try to come to some deal about it.
Doesn't hurt, and it can sometimes save money in the long run, especially if it's two big bucks bidders.
I wouldn't without contacting them first. Sometimes you'll still get the item and save money too by avoiding a bidding war with the person.
EDIT: Um, yeah just like Jaime said. I'm having problems reading today.

You would think material things isn't worth more than your friendships... bu I could be wrong =p
But if I recognize a name of someone here I'd probably not bid because I don't really collect so it probably means more to them.

It really depends on how much I want the item, how cheap it is at the time, and how well I know the person involved. I recently accidentally outbid a guy I have been chatting to for ages about Saturn stuff. We both sniped the same auction. My snipe was higher :D But he didn't mind ... he told me afterward he had been considering putting a higher bid, but it would still not have beaten me ... so I am glad he didn't, or I'd be paying more! I just wish we had known we were both going to be bidding beforehand - then we could have made a gentleman's agreement and I would have won for a lot less .. but never mind.
