I. Kid. You. Not.

My manager at Gamestop showed me the underside of the new shipment of "XBOX Music Mixer" bundles today, the one with the microphone and software. Dear God. A HEALTH WARNING about how the material in the Microphone has been known to cause cancer and if you use it, it's highly recommended to WASH YOUR HANDS after use.

Wha-wha-WHAT?

If we get one we have to send back to the warehouse, I'll yoink the sticker and put it up on here. I'm not buying the thing because I don't have an XBOX. If you're in a EB/Gamestop sometime soon, look for yourselves! Blew my mind, that's for sure

I was at Best Buy tonight, and yep. I saw a sticker right on the bottom, I bet only 1 out of 10 people would even notice that little sticker.

I attempted to rip one off for hopes of scanning it or something, yet it ripped :(

I think I heard about this recently. There's apparently a bit of some carcinogen or other...I'm thinking lead (not asbestos..?) but I don't remember...and it most certainly won't hurt you. From what I can tell this is a case of over-strict guidelines making an innocent product look bad.

The same chemical is in all the PS2 controllers, i think the PS2's ship in austaralia with PSOne controllers. The PS2 controllers are banned somewhere, i think it's australia.

WHA? What's this about the PS2 controllers having dangerous materials in them? @_@

Your incorrect.

No PlayStation products are banned anywhere due to manufacturing materials. 2 years ago a vendor changed a cable sheath on a controller to one with a small quantity of Cadmium. In EU countries they restrict Cd in cables because somebody could chew the cord and injest it. This held up sales of some products in Europe for a short while until corrected. Cd is used as a "plasticizer" to make the material more pliable and is not restricted to the same degree in the U.S./Canada as in Europe. You have to injest it to get it into your system and the EU thinks people chew on their controller cords :)

This same issue exists with the Music Mixer Microphone (Mad Catz OEM) and I understand it may also have more than 200ppm of Lead (Pb). If manufactured after Sept. of this year it falls under the California Prop 65 cancerous warning guidelines. If you live in California you know this warning is used everywhere, it's not even noticed by people it's so common. In 2005 the EU is banning all Pb in products and that means lead free solder as well. Lead free solder is not nearly as pliable as tin/lead solder and cracks easily.

This is more a manufacturing engineering/marketing blunder than any real safety issue.

I just saw that "lead warning" on two products this week for the first time. The first was on a big crystal bowl at the store. On the box it had a picture of the bowl holding some oranges and then there was a sticker that said, "this bowl contains lead, you should not eat anything from this bowl and if you touch it you could have birth defects or worse." Something to that effect. Then I just saw it again on a USB Mouse box and it had the same warning, referring to the cable.

Now I feel daring, who knew owning a mouse was so DANGEROUS!

No wonder Gamestop's site closed out the Music Mixer for $10 over the summer. LOL

Plastic is made with oil, which causes cancer.
Simple as that, if you look hard enough, virtually anything you buy states "may cause cancer in the state of california"

You californians have it rough, it apparently doesn't cause cancer in any other state :P
