I know very little about nes releases in the U.S., but I was wondering-

did Toys R Us repackage nes games? does anyone know anything about zelda being released in blue boxes?

I read a description of something someone was selling and it caught my eye..

anyway, what's the deal?

Toys R Us, as far as I know, is a pretty reputable company...I don't think they would do that. I've never heard of any blue box Zelda's or anything. I do remember that some Activision VCS games have blue labels, and some funcoland paper cardstock dust sleeves were blue I think, but that's about it...

Media Play once sold piles and piles of loose NES and 16-bit games in red or blue trays with shrinkwrap. If that's the case, be warned that these games are certainly not new.

I don't know of Toys 'R Us ever doing that, though...

About three years ago I bought some SNES games from Toys R Us.
Some were obviously reshrinked but they looked new and
came with all original packaging.

About 2 years ago I bought a shrinkwrapped Super Castlevania IV from Toys R US and it was the original shrinkwrap.

I know K-Mart used to sell those red or blue repackaged used NES games. ToysRUs by me always sold the real brand new stuff. When the 16-bit systems were way past dead, they were selling the Majesco re-releases of Genesis titles. Pretty funny to get games like Road Rash 2 in a late-style cardboard box with the game being a standard cart type (not the typical different looking EA cart type). Some of those games also having black tape-like stickers on the back of the carts. To cover up some original manufacturer markings, I believe. Gamergary, you mentioned Castlevania IV. Was it the old style cart with the center outset? Or was it the new style with the center inset? That stuff is interesting if you're looking for absolute completeness in your collection. Of course when Castlevania IV first came out it was the the old style, but when re-released it had the new style. I got Contra III like that from ToysRUs, too. Goofy stuff.

LazingBlazers, it's also a possibility that Contra III could be a Majesco release. It will have the warning on the back molded in plastic instead of a sticker, and the front label won't be as glossy. I have a Contra III and Super Star Wars like that which I picked up at KBToys.

Several different suppliers repackaged loose carts for the NES, Genesis and SNES during the late 90's and sold for a budget price of 9.99 to 14.99 usually at K-Mart, Target. I know one supplier was called 'Goodtimes' and they packaged little paper slips in with the games that were basic instructions and a 30-90 day warranty.
