That would have been incredible. To have gotten the PC Engine right after it was first released in Japan, back in October of 1987. Wow! To think that this system was released back in 1987 is pretty amazing. The Turbo didn't hit the U.S. until August 1989, but the actual PC Engine arrived in Japan in very late '87.

I think I got my TurboGrafx-16 in October of 1989, and to think that some people out there actually played the thing two years early seems really amazing to me.

I'm curious, did the PC Engine have a game packed in it, when it was released in Japan? What were the earliest PC Engine games that came out in very late 1989, or early 1988 that would be well known in the U.S.?

That would have seemed like a huge, monsterous, technological leap, had I seen the Turbo that early. I can only imagine how awed I would have been at the time.

I imagine that I would be as awed as I was when I first saw the Super Famicom in action, back in 1990, I think.

I first read about the PC Engine in Electronic Game Player magazine I think and the name totally threw me off (I thought it was some PC). But the game pics absolutely blew me away! It came out of left field as far as I was concerned since at that time all we really knew was NES/Famicom and SMS. But luckily for me.. I was in College and my flight out went straight through Narita, Japan.. So that gave me a 16 hour stopover to head out and hit the town! I immediately saw it when I went out to an electronics store and was blown away, but at the time, I thought about it and figured I'd have a hard time with the different power supply, etc. So I played the display a bit (It was R-Type) and left it at that. In retrospect, it didn't fell like too big a gap before the TG-16 came out.. but of course I snagged one of those as soon as it hit. TG-16/pce remains one of my all time favorite consoles :)
