Yesterday I snagged a GameBoy Pocket for about $5 at a Goodwill Store. I have no games to test it (just GBA stuff) but I did remember that without a cart it shows the Game Boy name. So I pop in some batteries, turn it on and I get a big black rectangle moving down the screen with the "circle R" next to it.

Does this mean the screen is bad or is there something loose? At least they said I could bring it back.

No I am pretty sure it does that if there is no game in it. I am pretty sure I remember mine doing the same thing. Of course I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure thats it.

On a side note, I tried to trade in a GameBoy Pocket not that long ago. They offered me a penny for it. yea.......

You are correct, sir. With no game in it, the Game Boy Pocket just displays a black bar. If the connections are dirty, the word Nintendo gets corrupt.

Thanks for the responses. I picked up Super Mario Land 2 today, plopped it in th GB Pocket and it worked!
