So I've been watching these "Activision's Greatest Hits" collections come out for different platforms over the last few years. I always see Pitfall included in these collections, but why does its far superior sequel, Pitfall II, never get included? IMHO, Pitfall II is by the far the better game of the two. It seemed to have a lot of innovations for its time such as hidden treasures and checkpoints. Games like Tomb Raider owe their entire existence to Pitfall II.
So is anyone aware of some good reason why Pitfall II never seemed to get ported beyond the consoles of the 1980's? Is there some legal or copyright holdup? Surely it's not a program size issue LOL

I never knew there was a Pitfall II until I did more studying about the Atari 2600 when I was bored.

I had no idea about it either until a few months ago. First time I tried playing Pitfall II, I kept throwing the controller down every time I got killed. Didn't realize that there are save points or something like that.

Well, it's about bloody time. A GBA port would really be the ticket, though...

I don't know, but imo it's the best 2600 game EVER. Too bad the sound is slightly off on the PS2.

@ Kaine - You know, back in the day...I don't remember a single person around my area that liked Pitfall II.
Everyone loved Pitfall...we had an entire Atari 2600 crew in my neighborhood. I think everyone saw the exploration aspects, and the lack of a timer...and just decided it wasn't fun. I know one person that bought it...none of us bothered to play it for more than 5 minutes.
We all hated Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. as well.
Games like Defender, Seaquest, Pac-Man, Artillery Duel, Kaboom, and Dragster were the best games in our world.

I too think Pitfall II is the best VCS game. Certainly the best music.
Dragster= teh \v/0r57 64/\/\3 3\/3r.
Ugh. I hate Dragster with a passion.

pitfall II was a landmark game for me, its the first game i can actually recall requesting (and then receiving) for a birthday present. i remember the first day i had it my friend heath came over and we played it for hours. then i got worried that heath was doing too good at it and would ruin the discovery aspect for me! he had uncovered the balloon area, which to us was amazing, it was like a second game withen the game. i used to try and scout out new routes during harry's float back to the red cross marker, the music still blows me away. maybe its just me but if a crop a pitfall II quality games had appeared it might have kept the 2600 going for a few more years. to think that pitfall II played on a system built to run games like pong and surround is still amazing.

Well if these are recent releases then that settles that. I will most definitely go get the GBA Activision anthology strictly for Pitfall II alone.
I dunno. Pitfall I never did that much for me. It seemed too random and I just didn't have the patience to sit down and figure out the whole thing. But Pitfall II just blew me away. Wow. That was probably the first game I can say that I "beat" in the sense that there was a defined ending point and I made it. I spent many a Saturday night as a teen playing Pitfall II and listening to Rush's "Exit Stage Left"*; the song "Xanadu" had a particular resonance with the game.
Had the privilege of meeting David Crane - Pitfall I and II's creator - a couple of CGE's back. He was pretty modest about it when I started to rave about what an awesome game Pitfall II was. Nevertheless, he was gracious enough to sign my old cartridge. That was the best acquisition I made at the show that year.
BTW Pitfall II on the Atari 5200 has a whole second quest!
Cheers,
Ben
Yeah, I got it last year for my 5200. Imagine my shock when that door to a whole new cave opened up behind the monkey! Sixteen years I've been playing this game on the 2600 and what a surprise to find this. I'm still trying to get through that part. Somebody needs to port that into the next anthology.
