My uncle has a new craze..Gamestore Dumpster Diving....It's an old news thing to do..
But after I told him about it he's been going nuts picking up all kinds of stuff..

It's crazy what game stores throw out..not that I didn't know that but I don't have the time to go dumpster diving.

He actually knows people within certain stores so that helps.

He's been bringing me all kinds of stuff..mainly empty game cases..
I guess the games were stolen and they throw awy the cases ..new games..a lot of gamecube games..

Today he finds a big store Display Unit..I'm not sure if it's a Playstation Display Unit or a Playstation 2 Display Unit..
All I know is he said it was Big & heavy and said he said Playstation..It's missing the monitor and system..but the controllers are intact..

(he had to go to work so I really won't know what it is until I see it or he explains it better as in regards to it being a PS or PD2 unit..I'm leaning toward it being a PS Display unit..He's a noob toward certain things...

He was bringing it here but I had to tell him no..basically It's mine but I don't have the room for it here right now so into our shared storage it goes.
I haven't seen what it looks like yet..
He's giving it to me but I want to get what it needs to be complete..

I have no clue on what type of a monitor goes in these displays...or even what they look like....I think the PS2 Store display unit is Grey..yes..?

Anyone here own either with pics please..??

.................................................. ...........................................

He also found.
.Several Spider Man games today complete...I think for the GC..
Several empty cases with no games in them but containing the manuals.
Store Game displays like Socum II..and a bunch of various Steering Wheels...Mad Catz etc..

Some kind of handheld games still in packages.

Now why would they throw out Steering Wheels..

He said his van was filled to the limit with stuff today and he's not bullshitting me..I'll be looking through all this stuff..selling some and keeping some..

What the heck do they just toss everything out nowadays.. x_x

..............
I can't check this stuff out myself until after the Holidays..I'm to busy..
Basically I need..Pictures and info on both the PS Store Display Unit & the PS2 unit so I can have some idea what he's talking about..

Thank You..

Your Right..
I'd rather see them given away rather then being thrown out..

Why not just put the stuff in a box by the door..with a sign "Free"..

The only bad thing about it is with the complete games like Spider Man,,
Some A-hole would take it for free and then bring it back and try to trade it in for cash at the same damn store or another store thus creating a circle..and a bigger loss...

When I think about all the gaming stuff that's thrown away it makes me sick..

He just went to one store..Imaginine what other stores have thrown out..

Nowadays it seems like a lot of the game store employees are just there for the 9-5 job..
Many people that I know that work in the Gaming stores have changed..
They are less friendly now..more like a programmed robot..
With exceptions

Sorry,to all the Nice Game store Employees

It just seems like business first..the hell with the customer, sell them/tell them anything to make a sale..
Well then that goes on all over.. x_x

Because someone will take one of the free steering wheels instead of buying one of the ones for sale.

Agreed. ALthough it would be nice if they could do that, someone would just come in and take everything. Here's what I know about PS2 display kiosks: the use flatscreen monitors.

This makes me sad. The EB closest to me is right next to a Cheezsteak Company that shares the same dumpster. Unless I hit it at JUST the right time everything's covered in grease and bird crap. :(

Theres 2 sides to this, the "lets be nice" side and the "buisness" side. I, being a buisness owner myself, realizes something that most people don't.

Say "Bill" comes in the Gamestop with 50.00 to buy a brand new Gamecube game...and as soon as he walks into the store....BAM, FREE GAME! WOW COOL, I don't have to buy that one I wanted anymore! Great, the store gave the guy a free game but lost a 50.00 sale.

Another point that will be brought up will be the "Give it free with a game purchase" point. While this gets the store a sale...the person buying one game may have been planning on getting 2, but why BUY 2 when you can buy only one game and get 2!

Stores care about money, while they want to make the customers happy...yes, they also want to milk there wallets and pocketbooks of every possible penny. So hence...no free games for you guys.

Goodness, if that's the case, then I don't think I'd want to eat there! :D

That works when someone is already planning on buying something, but there have been many times I bought games (during a buy 2, get 1 free sale, for instance) when I would not have bought the games if it weren't for the sale/freebie. Yeah, eventually they might have sold all three games for full price, but I think most places would rather I bought 2 games than no games, even if they have to give one away.

You would think they could still come up with a more creative solution than just tossing it in a dumpster. Running an ad in a local paper would surely garner some interest. And then there's the mother of all crap, eBay. I'm sure any EB in the world could find someone tell sell their old stock for them. Charge the neighbor's kid $20 a month for all the leftover goodies and let him sell them.

Somehow I'd expect the steering wheels being tossed to go with an old console, or at least be an old model. I have a hard time believing they are tossing out perfetly new, working steering wheels that are the same as the ones they're selling. Assuming this is true, givig them away wouldn't hurt a thing. If a customer comes to buy a nice PS2 wheel, a free N64 one won't stop him.

I asked about this when I worked at Target and they said it was for a tax write-off (ie they get more money for throwing it away rather than selling or giving it away). Also for some of the display items, the store might not have the right to re-sell or give the item away.

I'd be interested to see what these are (i.e. the "Pocket Arcade System" NGPC?)

For those you guys who get free stuff from the stores, not dumpster diving, how do you do it?

Easy. You just go in, and politely ask the guy (or girl) behind the counter if they have any promo boxes or items that they are planning on getting rid of. Most of the time they will, and give you the remainder. Ive gotten all kinds of goodies this way. :)
