how many different types of sega CD game packages are there and whats the story behind them, timewise etc?

here are the different ones currently in my collection

1) standard blue saturn type case

2) sewer shark in a reg CD jewel case (pack in)

3)sol feace, sherlock holmes in the cardboard/plastic jewel case

4) 32x sega CD yellow cardboard such as night trap

5) cardboard longbox- wolfchild

6)sega cd 32 x style cardboard but in blue- corpse killer

any others?

here are the different ones currently in my collection

1) standard blue saturn type case

These were the standard retail release games that replaced the flimsy cardboard ones (see below), most of them fall into this category.


2) sewer shark in a reg CD jewel case (pack in)

This game was a pack-in game with the Sega CD model 2 console until 1993 when it was replaced by Tomcat Alley. It's also one of the 21 original releases that were in flimsy cardboard boxes.


3)sol feace, sherlock holmes in the cardboard/plastic jewel case

Sol-Feace, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, Sega Classics 4-in-1, and Hot Hits/Rock Paintings were all pack-ins with the original Sega CD model 1 console.


4) 32x sega CD yellow cardboard such as night trap

Corpse Killer, Farenheit, Night Trap, Slam City and Supreme Warrior are all Sega 32X CD games. You need the 32X connected as well as the Sega CD to enjoy the enhanced video (which is really the only difference between these and the standard Sega CD releases).


5) cardboard longbox- wolfchild

These are the first 21 "games" produced for the Sega CD. After these, the plastic cases became the norm.

6)sega cd 32 x style cardboard but in blue- corpse killer

These were the later releases. This practice is common among publishers, especially Sega ones. Cost-cutting measure. Trivia: the only game that appears in two different box styles is Night Trap, which is both an original cardboard release (above) as well as a later blue-box cardboard release.

Colors of Modern Rock is different, it's got a "pop open" type CD case, like the early 3DO games but in a CD-sized package.

Farenheit is interesting in that it contains both Sega CD and Sega 32X CD versions. As such, it has a "split" look. It's in a plastic case but has both the yellow and blue stripe styles on the spine.


why all the changes?

well that pretty much covers it, thanks.

i've been having good luck collecting this system over the past year and since finding the x-eye my interest has only increased. its a neat platform that sort of gets forgotten in the bigger collecting picture.

come to think of it i have two more box types not listed...albeit special box types

leathal enforcers, the giant cardboard case with the gun packed in, its cool that they chose keep the blue stripe background, makes it look like an oversized promo.

good deal games- i got a pair of these in a trade (sniderman?) bugblasters is one of them, simple jewel case but they went the extra mile in keeping the blue stripe design.

and what about the pack-ins for the x-eye and laserdisc models. yet another variation?
