View Full Version : Qix!

I got Ultimate Qix in the mail a few months ago, but never played it, as one of my dogs chewed through my a cord from my Genny (Never really looked into it yet), but yesterday, I put it in my Nomad and was very pleased. I guess you could say that I LOVE IT! I'm a puzzle gamefan, and this was right up my alley. Sadly, I am not the best player at it... on easy with 7 lives, I can only get to stage 3. What consoles has this game been released for? I'm going to look into getting some other versions. Oh, and does anyone know of any cheats for this game?

I remember that Taito distributed Qix to the NES... it had two arcade sequels, Super Qix, and Twin Qix... unofficial versions of the game include Gals Panic and Miss World Nude '96. :P

I love Qix too, but it frustrates the hell out of me. So does Arkanoid. Taito puzzle games really get my blood boiling, but they kick ass. 8-)

Wanna know how vicious it gets? Eventually, TWO Qix will try and destroy your marker. If you manage to draw a line in between the two, separating them, you get a HUGE load of points... never pulled it off myself, but I've heard from Classic Gaming that it is indeed possible.

Maybe the Atari 5200 version is easier? I can split the double Qix with the greatest of ease on that one.
Or maybe your skills are weak, old man. :devilish:

I second bargora's comment. I play it on the 5200, and splitting the Qix isn't that tough.

My first non arcade Qix was the 5200. I third that comment about the simplicity of splitting the qix. Take it slow and don't bite off more than you can block out. I remember sitting and feeling that sinking feeling that you have blocked out to much space with the qix heading your way. Both my brother and I would start screaming. Love this game. Didn't the arcade version have a track ball?

Wha...!!? No! What a wild game that would be though! LOL

My favorite home version currently is the Superlite 3-in-1 Arcade Classics (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/3in1/) import for the PS1. Arcade perfection.

Has anyone picked up Qix Neo for PSX? I'm almost positive it was released very recently - in any case, there are quite a few people on ebay and a few non-bay stores selling it, so I assume they're not all confused and selling the Euro version. Qix is the shizz.

I've heard there's an SNES sequel called Cacoma Knight in Bizyland. What's that like?

Qix Neo wouldn't be a US version of Battle Qix, would it? If so, I'd be all over it. But it's probably just a localization of the original Superlite Qix / Qix 2000 bundle.

Wow, I had no idea that Cacoma Knight was a Qix clone! *scampers off*

I just sat down and tried it, and I think it's fun. It's a bit too busy on the screen, much more so than Ultimate Qix, but it's still a very solid clone.

All I want now is Tatio Memories for my Ngage. Mmmm...portable arcade Qix. :-P Oh yeah, and I need that PSX Qix Neo game. Looks like it's a release by Mud Duck games, those repsonsible for a good portion of the shovelware we're seeing on the PSX now.

I hadn't heard of that Qix Neo game myself. Now I've gone off and ordered a copy. Never heard the term "shovelware" before LOL Someone should start a thread listing what other cheapo Playstation games have been released lately that are worth picking up...I have picked up one or two based on Joe's columns in Tips & Tricks...

Ultimate Qix rocks.

FWIW, it's possible to fill in 100% of the screen. :) That's right, 100%.

If you're only getting to round 3, you'll want to work on boxing the qix into smaller and smaller areas. In Ultimate Qix, the Qix will *shrink* as you fill in the screen. The smaller you can get the Qix to shrink down, the better your chances will be for filling 100% of the screen. But 98-99% is fairly easy to do on every round. :)

And sometimes, you can complete the first few rounds in *one* move for a ludicrous bonus score. You know how the Qix stops every so often? Wait for that and then draw a quick, tiny box around it. Viola! Mega points!

Here's another one if you're a QIX fan: VOLFIEV for PC Engine. I'm not positive but this may be the same game as Ultimate Qix on the Genesis. Can anyone confirm? I am not nearby to an emulator :)

Querjek
12-23-2003, 11:25 AM
I'm pretty sure that VOLFIEV is the same as Ultimate Qix-the screen shots of the Mega Drive version matched the Genny version of Ultimate QIx (And were on the same page of the Video Game Museum).

@ Arcade Antics: I'll try that. I was wondering why it would stop and never could react fast enough.

@ Oobgarm: O_O Now I must get an N-Gage. I just found that that Taito Memories game has Bubble Bobble too. MUST GET!

And you'd be correct in assuming so. I've lost many hours to that one. It can be found at most Gamestops used for close to $5.

Yes, Qix was made for the Game Boy...probably back during the original Game Boy's time. I used to have a copy. I was curious and looked and found I do have the Lynx version. I'll have to try this one...haven't used my Lynx in quite awhile...

wow, a lot has been said about this game. I feel that this is possibly one of the most underrated games EVER. I'd have to second... or should i say thrid that the 5200 version of splitting the qix is quite easy. Nes version is quite the challange and has been my very kind friend since i got a nintendo when i was very young. Qix has kept me company on cold lonely nights. Qix is my savior. Qix is simply beautiful and should be played by everyone at least once a day. Have you played Qix today? I don't know where i would be without it. My favorite game hands down. Great topic! :D

I just started playing Qix on the MAME a lot latley. I am addicted to it I think, I just keep starting new games and I can't stop playing it.

I have it for the Atari 8bit also but the fields fill way too slow on that one.

I have a Qix cart sitting in front of me right now that I can't use, seeing as how it's for the Atari 400/800. In fact, I offered to give it to the first person that wanted it a while back, but no one said anything. My offer still stands.

There's voice-over stuff on the Japanese Superlite 3-in-1 compilation that suggests "keex."

Qix Neo arrived in the mail today, making it my first game acquisition of 2004. If I recall, I bought it through half.com but I'm not positive now... x_x This means I now have Qix for PS, 5200, Lynx and SNES (sort of, Cacoma Knight in Bizyland is a sequel of sorts)...

Can anybody tell me whether the Qix versions on Qix Neo or the Superlite 3-in-1 are dramatically better (or more faithful) ports than the Atari 5200 version? (PDF, perhaps? :hmm: )

Ah--after reading the DP reviews of Qix for the 5200, I realize that I may have been playing at "wuss-boy" difficulty. According to the reviews, the third difficulty level attempts to recreate arcade difficulty.

Bargora: the Superlite 3-in-1 Qix IS arcade Qix, barring some Kanji subtitles that pop up in the attract mode. It is a beautiful and perfect thing.

I'm still waiting to hear what's up with Qix Neo. Is it the Superlite version, or is it Battle Qix, or is it Silly Wabbit, Qix Are For Qids? Rogmeister, can ya help a brother out here? I wanna know if I need to go pick this up.

I picked my copy up at Value City for $7.99. I don't know the scope of this chain but the MI folks should be familiar with it.

I've also seen it at Media Play.

OK, there are at least 3 people who have posted in this thread that they bought Qix Neo, but still haven't told us what it is!!!

I read in one auction that it is an updated version of Qix which also includes the original. Is that true? If so, how faithful is the original port and how did they update it?

In another auction it says that it "includes lots of arcade classics." Huh? What else would it have besides Qix?

Sheesh!

OK. I just tried it out, and it looks to be a remake of an Ultimate Qix-like game. The copyright on the screen is 1989-2003 Tatio. Turns out it's actually Volfied (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=V&game_id=10345). Perhaps it's the same game Joe mentioned above?

But I can tell you that it's hard. Maybe I'm rusty, but I couldn't even pass the first level. OK, I was getting greedy by trying to box the bastard in really tight, but I had rough going for the first few times I tried to create boxes. These little crab-like things(not the Qix itself) roam the playing field and come straight for you if you're drawing a line. Destroy the box with the red dot in it, and they blow up. I assume they have replaced the Sparx with them.

There's a standard arcade version, and there's also an arrange version. Minimal differences, IMO.

I hope the original is unlockable at some point.

I've been playing it too, and I don't think you can attribute it to "Qix rust." It's pretty difficult. I think the main problem is that the playfield is too small and the "characters" are just too big. The enemies are far too aggressive and make a beeline for you as soon as you begin to draw your line (as mentioned before) giving you very little time to make any substantial progress. The manual makes it sound like that it's easy to surround the enemies. Good luck. The power-ups do help somewhat, but don't really add anything to the game. As far as the graphics are concerned, they look just like a Super NES title. I don't know if they were going for that "throwback" look or were just too lazy to spice it up a bit.

I'd say that it's really not a game you'd be going back to again and again. Not when you can play the much more addictive original on MAME or the always excellent 5200 version.
