Which do you prefer? The original, level based, much more difficult Castlevanias (Castlevania 1-4), or the modern,RPG like, exploring castlevanias(SotN, Aria of Sorrow).
While the newer, RPG like ones are great, I still find it much more rewarding to play through Castlevania 3 for the tenth time than SotN for the third.

I prefer the older ones (1-3 were favs), because they were difficult and made you use your brain.

The new GBA version are WAY to easy, and seem to be made for childern, really small ones.

I prefer Castlevania. Nuff said. :D

Alright, I'll say more. :P

Seriously, you want to know how die-hard I am when it comes to CV? I even got some enjoyment out of the Castlevania Adventure... and I even beat it at least twice without a Game Genie! I'm not kidding. I'm just so adept to the feel of the series that I know what to expect. Same goes for Haunted Castle... I beat it without any cheats whatsoever! That was just once, though... don't know if I could do it again. I kid you not. 8-)

If it's a Castlevania game, then I instantly love it.

"Now?"

"Yes, now."

NUFF SAID. :pimp:

I'm likin' the newer, Metroi-ish game mechanic. Playing Circle of the Moon right now.

I like Castlevania 1, 3, 4 and the original B/W Game Boy one...that is all.

I like them both actually, but the level-based ones you can always come back to after not playing for months at a time and get right back into it. The others you may be likely to forget where you were or what you were doing in your quest at the time.

I like almost all of the 2D ones and dislike most of the 3D ones. And within this long-running series, the original Castlevania has no equal.

I like any and all 2D installments.

Right now I'm working my way through Bloodlines, which really is a better game than Super Castlevania IV, IMO. MUCH better -- except for the eye and ear candy. SCIV was a total snoozefest for me, save for the fight vs Drac. I find Bloodlines to be very easy on the default settings, but at least its entertaining.

I like the old ones, and I love the first N64 title (probably the second one too, when I get to it). I played maybe an hour of SotN (PSX The Best copy of the import on ePSXe) and got bored with it; Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow was a different story though. I liked that one a lot, but the whole leveling-up thing only appeals to me sometimes.

I also don't like the new music -- I prefer tunes that can be hummed to the new stuff. While Yamane's music is very good -- especially considering she has to bridge the gap between the older music and classical music which tends to build up slowly and not repeat interesting musical motifs -- I'm not a fan of it.

Tough question... I have to take the wimpy way out and say I like 'em both (2D only, haven't tried the 3D games yet).

The level-based games have a higher challenge factor and IMO greater replay value, but the adventure games are less frustrating. Plus you can play SotN for a few minutes, save, and still feel like you've made a little progress. If you get stuck on a level in one of the earlier games, that's it. Now that I don't have a lot of time to devote to games, the "incremental progress" concept has become more important to me.

I have played through and enjoyed all three GB Castlevanias (especially Belmont's Revenge, which has an awesome soundtrack). Proud to say I also beat Haunted Castle -- on MAME, but without cheats. 8-)

And, I have to say it... Super CV IV = Best. Soundtrack. Ever.

I personally dig the older 2-D NES/GB side scrollers the most, but I really [i]really[/] enjoyed the new PS2 game. I'm trying to get into the GBA ones, but there is no hope for me to enjoy Symphony of the Night. I've tried, no luck. :o

Hmmm....some of the GB sidescrollers are only so-so, much like the N64 3d "quest" games. So, I like them both, but certain games more than others.

I love CV 1-3, AND SotN, But can't stand Vampire Killer for MSX. I love the TG16 Rondo game, but think Genesis bloodlines and the SNES version of Rondo are so-so.

I have to admit though, for the quest games, I've only beaten Sotn, the first GBA game, and the first N64 game.

However, there is no BAD CV game...ever.

CV 1, 2, 3 and Sotn are my favorites, though. God, I used to play CV1 so much I beat it on 1 life a couple of times...CV1 rocks!

My favorites are CV2 and SOTN. COTM wasn't too bad, and what little I've played of LoI seems pretty good. I didn't really care for CVs 1,2,4, or X though.

Symphony of the Night and Rondo of Blood for me.

Give me the old level ones. If I want to play Metroid, I'll play Metroid. If I want to play Castlevania, I want to be going through levels, kiilling the periodic boss, without having to seek out special items or anything.

Definitely give me the level based style. That's not to say I don't mind the Metroidvania style (hell, I loved SotN and LoI), but more often than not I just want to play a CV that I can just jump into.

Symphony of the Night made me believe in video games again. It is amazing.

CV3 is my favorite of the original series, although I did enjoy Simon's Quest quite a bit.

I keep getting my ass kicked by the dragon zombie in circle of the moon... am I a shitty gamer? Put it down and plowed through all of FFX-2, and considering not even picking it up again.

Maybe it's the gamecubes tiny dpad that's screwing me up :(

It's not your fault. I had lots of trouble beating those ****tards when I first played the game. One's already a pain, but two... yeesh. Definitely one of the harder bosses in CotM. I'd give you some strategy, but I haven't played the game in ages...

Wait, I do remember something. I forget what DSS combination it was that would have you gradually recover life... but whenever the dragons got too rough, I retreated to the upper left corner of the screen, where NOTHING could touch me. I just rested up there and watched some of my life recover, then I waited some more to regain my magic, and when I was ready, I decided to step back into the ring. VERY tedious, but it worked... oh, and having your level be up to 25 or higher is also quite helpful.

what is RONDO OF BLOOD and VAMPIRE KILLER? are these Castlevania games, Castlevania games not under the Castlevania title, or games that resemble Castlevania?

also SNES 'RONDO'? I have never heard of this. I own SUPER CASTLEVANIA IV and CASTLEVANIA DRACULA X.

I know "BLOODLINES" = "THE NEW GENERATION"...so maybe these are foreign variations of same titles.

I do not know.

Also what does the acronym MSX stand for.

Also what does the acronym MSX stand for.

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo is the Castlevania game released for the PC-Engine CD. It roughly translates to Demon Castle Dracula: Rondo of Blood. I hear it's the best CV game ever, but seeing as how I lack a PC Engine CD and/or a TurboDuo (I don't even have a f**king TurboGrafx-16), I have yet to play it. Go figure.

The PC Engine Dracula X is a VERY different game from the SNES Dracula X. The latter is underrated by many. Sure, compared to the translation it was based off of, it's lacking. On its own, I find it to be one of the better Castlevania titles.

Vampire Killer is the first EVER Castlevania game, released in 1986 for the MSX home computer. It's somewhat similar to Castlevania on the NES, but the stages are non-linear, the graphics are a bit more drab, the music is a bit slower than on the NES, the overall feel of it is different... sort of like a combination of Castlevania 1 and 2, but it's mostly like 1. You face all the enemies and bosses from the NES CV on VK, except that Dracula's second form is a possessed portrait of himself that hangs on the background and spits out bats, VERY different from his second incarnation on Castlevania. The game allows no continues, no save points, and it's not always fair in hit detection... in my opinion, it's much more impossible than Haunted Castle. And before you say anything, Haunted Castle is the arcade Castlevania.

MSX? Hmm... I dunno what it means. Sorry. :P

MSX = Machines with Software eXchangeability, an attempt to create an industry standard among computers in the early 80s. Plus, the computers' language was Microsoft Extended Basic, so I'm pretty much sure that also had a big influence on the name.

Or you could just drop by the Castlevania Dungeon sometime... it has everything that you could possibly want to know about every version of Castlevania, including the ones that you didn't know about.

I think I'm level 27... but I haven't played it in ages. I DO know however that I somehow only have a grand total of 4 DSS cards. They just never drop for me, so I've gone through the whole game with pretty much just the whip.

general question. i have noticed how crisp and clear emulated screenshots are....any way of getting this on a tv? this isn't what everyone speaks of when making RGB cables, modding their consoles, and using an RGB monitor? :o

RGB on a monitor is as close to a emulated screenshot as you will get. Component video is as close on a TV.

In general, I just suck at Castlevania. I'm stuck in Circle of the Moon where the medusa heads are floating up high (ugh, the level of frustration), and I died extremely quickly during SotN (heh, I snatched a rather minty copy of the non-GH SotN for next to nothing on Ebay!).

I also have Simon's Quest and Super Castlevania IV. My goals for 2004: Get the other NES and GBA games in the series and finish them all!!! Yeh. I'll probably say the same thing in a year...
