Well, I recently upgraded my system, and I figure now might be a good time to retire the old sound scheme of Super Mario World sounds I've been using. It was quickly and easily assembled from the archives at TMK (http://www.classicgaming.com/tmk), and while it has served me well, it may be time to move on.

I was thinking it might be nice to use the sounds from an RPG, but the only RPG I know of whose sounds can be easily extracted is FF7 PC, whose sounds can be a little shrill. The ideal would be something like Chrono Trigger or Earthbound (Earthbound even has a sound test in its debug mode), but making such a scheme myself could be very time consuming.

Has anyone seen anything like this available for download?

Slightly off topic, but with newer soundcards and programs, you can actually record sounds playing on your computer. I know this works with Sound Forge. Just set the input as your output. If you decide to make your own sound scheme, this would be an easy way to do it -- simply put the program on record, then launch the game and play for a while.

I'm thinking something along the lines of ... oh, I don't know, Bard's Tale? :)

Unfortunately, Sound Forge is not a cheap program. Even a similar program in the correct price range, Total Recorder, is not freeware. And then there are issues with DirectSound being used instead of the normal sound driver, and so on. I do have a second computer handy that I could hook up to my soundcard's input, but it would still take much time to set everything up and properly cut the sounds afterwards.

While we're on the subject, though, is there a way to record soundcard output in Linux?
