From Play-Asia. Woo! Here's a mini-review of what I've played so far:
--START REVIEW--
GRAPHICS: 9
Yes, it's true. The graphics are great. A game doesn't have to be in #D to have nice graphics. It is hard to tell if the characters are really well-animated sprites, or if they're cell-shaded 3D models. The backgrounds do seem flat compared to the characters, though. Whenever Bonk eats some meat, a seemingly random assortment of English letters appears on the screen and some fire goes by. This is a nice effect, as is where each 3-4 steps you take a footstep noise is heard and the word comes out from under Bonk's feet. This is weird, but again is another nice touch. All characters seem very faithful to their NES counterparts.
SOUND: 8
The music seems to all have been redone, but that isn't necessarily good. I admit, the music is nice, but it sounds like 1 person just took the NES tracks and changed the instruments digitally. The "footstep" and "meat" noises are well intact, and although new to this rendition of the game, hold in the "caveman"-style of sounds one gets used to with Bonk games.
GAMEPLAY: 10
This version of Bonk feels like the NES version. Each level is practically identical to its 8-bit counterpart, and all enemies are just as fun to "bonk" around. Each character seems to be "stretched"-I don't mean that the graphics are stretched, but the sprites seem longer than they used to be. This, in no way, hinders the gameplay. As an added bonus, if wanted, the D-pad can be used to control Bonk, thus meaning that the Hori Digital pads for the Gamecube are compatible with this game. For the collector who must have the best experience, a Hori digital pad would make this feel even more like the original.
OVERALL: 10
I did have a little trouble starting this game as I know no Japanese, but once you begin to play, no knowledge of Japanese is needed. This game is VERY faithful to its Famicom counterpart, and the upgrade in graphics is a bonus. At ~$30 from most imports sites, this is a worthy pickup for Bonk fans everywhere. Buy it, now!
--END REVIEW--
I also got a CLub Nintendo code with this gme. Is there anyone here who can use it (I mean members who live in Japan) who want the code? If you want it, I'll PM it to you. First come, first serve.
