So today I recieved my first PAL game for the Playstation (Capcom Generations... Woo-ha!!). I start my trusty convertor (mmm.... PS-X-Change), do the disc swap thing and everything's fine... Until the game starts. When it starts, the bottom of the screen keeps moving upat a fast rate. I've never really had a problem with playing Japanese Playstation imports before, but I have problems with playing this European import. Does anybody know what to do? The problem either lies....

a) Maybe the disc I used is corrupt (doubtful since it looks like it's in great shape)
b) In my TV since it is American and old, and maybe it wasn't meant to handle non-NTSC stuffs.

Thanks.

Yeah, running PAL stuff on an NTSC Playstation is a pain in the ass. My original model 1001 PSX just locks right up when a game tries to switch to a PAL sized video mode. I can at least get the stuff to run on my PS2, but it usually has to be patched. Once you find a patch, then it's not too hard. Rip, patch, reburn. Also, using a different TV might help, as newer ones do a slightly better job of handling weird signal formats.

A few years ago, I saw a website said there was a boot disc you could use to run PAL games on a NTSC PSX. I'm not sure about it though, as I never tried it.

I'd expect it to be inconsistent, as some games were reprogrammed extensively, some were not, and yet others are just odd ports :/

er, bubble burst for ya: PAL tvs run at 50hz, NTSC at 60hz. most PAL games are coded that way too. that running line stuff in interference as the tv stuggles to digest what the hecuba is going on. no normal converter will run PAL psx games properly. oddly enough, some PAL dreamcast games have a 60hz mode, and you can choose which one to run on your tv (nightmare creatures 2, and record of lodoss war spring to mind). also, some PAL saturn stuff runs fine (but sometimes letterboxed with minor screen garbage up top), but it all depends on what you're using to play them with...

Well, the PSX and PS2 seem to be slightly different in that the system's video hardware handles the PAL/NTSC difference. PAL games use a screen mode with more scanlines, but the hardware takes care of signal generation and color encoding. It's possible that the console also changes to a PAL signal output, but I have a European Beatmania that, when played on my PS2, actually gives an NTSC signal, though the framebuffer has more scan lines on the top and bottom. So the picture doesn't roll, but the screen is moved down, and also runs off the bottom of the screen. The patch simply shifts everything up enough for it to be playable. If you run into trouble, it will likely be from the game's speed caused by the different video clock, or most of the screen being cut off.

Some PAL games may differ; I've only got one Euro game to try right now.

BINGO ! geelw said the same thing i was gonna reply with until
i seen his...

YOU COULD put an image of the PAL game on your hard drive, patch it
and make a burn of the game so it at least runs and you can play it...
