Since there just aren't enough topics about classic game collections for portable systems here, I thought I'd start another one. :D

Anyway, what did you guys think of Activision Anthology for the Game Boy Advance? The programmers were daring enough to use emulation rather than porting the games outright. This resulted in faithful recreations of popular 2600 games, but it also resulted in some unwanted side effects, like slow gameplay in some titles and compressed graphics in all of them.

I kind of wish the designers had programmed the games from scratch rather than trying to emulate them, but overall, I guess I'd have to say that I'm satisfied with Activision Anthology. Some of the titles in the collection are fantastic, especially Megamania, a fast-paced shooter which I've always really enjoyed.

Frankly, I think they did a darn good job on the GBA Anthology. I just love it, even if a few game run a litle slower than normal (nothing bad in my book). I've been playing with this for days now...

I have to say that my reaction to gba anthology is mixed at best...

here are my complaints so far...

no geese in barnstorming? just NOT barnstorming without the geese...

HERO is way toooooo sloooooow to be my HERO.

Climber 5 is so slow its not playable... (at least not with my attention span)

Kevin

p.s. I do like the high score feature, although I wish you could also add your initials.... I also like that the manuals were all included... and that there are homebrews in the package...

Wha? You don't get any geese in Barnstorming? Weird... It works fine on my copy, which is why it took me so damned long to get the patch. ;-) I wonder if it's a defective print run or something like that.

I can't comment on Activision Anthology for the GBA, as I've yet to find a copy for sale in Montreal, and Aspyr would charge me $40 (including shipping) to send it to me (not including any duty that it might incur).

How I wish I could play this, though! I can imagine myself playing Pitfall! in the subway on my GBA... Maybe I should invest in C batteries in bring my Entex Defender to work instead (just kidding! The Entex Defender is great but it's a bit bulky).

Anyone's got a copy to sell?

Ok, I guess its been awhile since I've played barnstorming...

if you never press the throttle, the geese never show up...

amazing how my time got better when I discovered the throttle button :embarrassed:

nothing wrong with Barnstorming for GBA Activision Anthology... as long as you know what you're doing.

Oh, wow, they never show up if you don't hit throttle? That's almost weirder than the possibility of a defective run. Heh.

So far I'm disappointed in it - because I haven't actually *seen* it for sale anywhere yet! I was gonna get it for my dad for Xmas (with a GBA SP) and it never made it into any stores around here in time. Sons a bitches!

I had never played Climber 5 before (I've been meaning to ask, are there Climbers 1-4?), and I sorta liked it. It does seem to be on the slow side. Does anyone know anything about the "unidentified prototypes" in AA? One seems like it's a color test, and the other seems to be a pyramid-ish building game.

This is the same version of Climber 5 that was released months ago as a demo. I found it to be pretty slow going in the first 3 or 4 levels and then it sped up in Level 5 to the point of not being enjoyable. I'm sure it's not impossible because there are one or two people who have made it to levels 10+ ;)

But I'm sure your current build and subsequent cart release has been optimized. I saw that .bin demo as a technology preview, looks like a great game and with some tweaking the gameplay will be awesome. However, it is not very fun to play on the GBA because it slows down an already too slow game.
