I am having trouble with my dream cast. I will be playing a game and all of a sudden it stops and goes back to the system menu screen, the one with the memory card manager, cd player, date, etc. Anyone have any ideas why this happens or what to do???

Make sure your system is level. I had a similar problem a while back and I noticed my DC was titled on a slight angle.

Could be a power supply problem. I remember reading at shoryuken.com (a Capcom fighting game strategy site for those uninitiated) in the hardware section about how over time, something in the power unit will wear down, and randomly disconnect and cause the system to reset. Not sure if this is your problem though.

It could also be the laser/disc reader assembly. I was randomly playing a game (Skies of Arcadia I think) and the system just reset to the bootup menu. A few more times and it died.

You sure you weren't drunk when you built it?

Both Issues SpoonyBard pointed out could be a problem.

Which games does it happen with?

I had a DC that would do this with Crazy taxi. Any copy of crazy taxi would make my DC screwy.

Clean the PSU to motherboard connectors and your DC will be fine.

Any scratches on the disc could cause that to happen also.

Last week I bought a DC from EB. Today it did the same thing. It reset. Should I take it back and get another? It happened while playing SFA3. Ya know EB has that 14 day thing. Thats why Im asking :D

Lets cut to the chase, and i know you all wanted to say this..
some backups will do this too.

This is most likely the solution to your problem.

Mine use to do the same - it's work perfectly ever since.

My dreamcast recently started resetting as described in this thread, and cleaning the PSU-to-MB connector fixed it.

I was surprised it worked, as I got absolutely no dirt off the pins, but now my DC 's working again!

Thanks Technical/Restoration forum!

^ Same here, it reset before I took it appart and cleaned it. Never had the problem again. Just makes shure you put it back together EXACTLY as it was before or you will have more problems.
