I just bought RPG maker 2 for ps2, go home, and I get DRE's, now I cannot take the game back to gamestop because I have opened it. I feel like I wasted my 50$(gift card :D )

Is their any way to repair disk read error's (without opening the Ps2)?

I kno that sucks big time, try placing the disk in different positions when putting in disk tray, and also, is the disk blue? Cause when i got Risk:Global Domination, it took me 100 tries to get it right. I would try calling Sony but thats crap because they dont do anything.......

That sucks.

Yeah, the disk is blue-bottomed (cd) :(

I know that the rules have changed...but won't they take exchanges for the same title if the game is defective??? I've never had problems doing that.

omg the exact same thing happened to me with rpg maker 2. i exchanged it at the place i bought for a new one, and it still didn't work. all my other games work on it however.

Blue backed is a CD based game. Clear backed is a DVD based game. Your PS2 has begun to fail to read CD based discs. The lens is probably dirty. Less likely, but possible, the laser eye is getting weaker, and/or the laser assembly is a tiny bit out of height adjustment. That's all it takes.

I repair at least 8 PS2's a week, and often more than that. I predict the rarest console ten years from now, will be the uber rare 'working' PS2.

You can get a can of compressed air from Wal-Mart .
Opend the tray and put the nozzle in and blast away.
I've cleaned a few PS2's that way and it worked.

Well the thing is blue disks usually don't work, especially on some models. I think thenewer ones might mess it up, but yes, RPG Maker is great, but like I said before, try it in different posistions, and also, does it make weird noises like it is unzipping som ething?

I know someone posted about some tape trick. Take some tape and put it on both sides of the disc. Maybe they will post about it. Never tried myself.

If it's slipping with blue backed discs (grinding noise), a tape trick could work. If it's not slipping, it's the laser. Dirty. Weak. Too High. Too low. Burnt out...

So many different failures can cause the problem, the mind reels...

there is a trick to the DRE insert your disc and slowly turn your PS2 upside down (works sometimes, depends on the magnitude of the DRE).

It's amazing how Sony still claims there is no problem with the PS2.

I've had:

1 X-Box
1 Gamecube
3 PS2's

I like my PS2 but Sony workmanship and durability is garbage. And sadly it is done on purpose.

This is a pain, but I can't stand to not have my PS2 (Send it to Sony) because I play it so much.
I used the guide on TechTV which explains how to raise/lower the lens. I then discovered, through hours of trial-and-error, that my PS2 CANNOT read CDs and DVDs at the same time. Now, I leave my PS2 unscrewed so I can change the gear position when I need to change discs types.

If you want to get a new PS2. Electronic Botique will give you $100 trade in for a non-working PS2.

$100 trade in for a non-working PS2.

wow. None of the EBgames here do that. I could make mint after swapping out all the good components, if they did. And if I was a crook....

They won't give you anything if the Seal is tampered with and it's been opened.

Man, they're still that bad? :O Certainly, a working early model PS2 will be a real rarity years from now.

i took my ps2 to a local funcoland and they downloaded new drivers for my ps2 onto a memory card that is suppose to help the ps2 read blue disks better. risk seems to play slightly better for me now but not much. it's worth a shot if there is a store near you doing it, try it.

I've sent two PS2s myself to SONY for free repair..both have been opened by me..
+ I've had others set to them..

NOTE: now SONY will NOT Repair the systems for free if opened..

They brought it to me in pieces,,I mean pieces..he even removed that fine silver wire to the front switches..

The system had gave them a full DISC READ ERROR ..then no power..

I called SONY for the free repair and he said they will no longer take it if it's been opened..I would have to pay $103.00 + Shipping..
I wanted to tell the guy to go.....f ..H..S....but I didn't.

I put the PS2 back together..Reset the lens by just pushing it all the way to it's starting position and it worked..it now reads all discs..
It's been tested now for 2-3 days and it's still working.

Now I've got a story that fits right in with this,

Baught Contra Shaddered Soldier awhile back, at full retail, could not get it to work, took it to a friends house, worked perfect, came back home, and to my surprise, none of my blue bottem games worked. My dvd games worked fine though, so I figured I'd just go with it for awhile. Then it took away vice city, which caused me to go into an epileptic fit, @_@ ,so I try searching around the net, and I find myself at techTV's site, which says something along the same lines you guys were saying, about a white gear thing, so I opened it up, worked the gear, and nothing. So I got the bright idea to just take it back to wal marts and get my money back. And the most snottyest bitch is behind the counter, she just flips it around and says a stickers missing, and I can't return it.

So I'm stuck with a disk read error, I'm almost ready to sale all my ps2 stuff and get another console, because Sony has absolutely burned me, and it'll take nothing shy of metal gear solid in vice city to cure this kind of pain.

</end rant>

Well, it's a good thing my PS2 hasn't stopped working (I got mine 10/2002). My PSX (1999) hasn't stopped working either. I dunno, maybe I'm just lucky. :)

There is a class action lawsuit against Sony for all of the hundreds of thousands of non-working PS2's. If you ask sony's cust service reps about how you can get involved in this they may just hear your plea a little bit clearer. Anyways if you get the P.O.S. repaired it WILL break again. And sony CLAIMS to have the largest installation for current home consoles (B#%$hit). If you must have a PS2 you should trade non-working unit in for $40 and get one with serial # starting after PT4xxxxxxxxxx or PT5xxxxxxxxxx.
