View Full Version : Gameboy-esque games on movie projection systems?

Some guy came by the CV Dungeon Forums claiming you could play Castlevania on a Dolby CP500 sound processor. Here's the good stuff:

I can't guarantee you a thing, except that I'm pretty darn skeptical about this. The statements at the end of the article seem to strongly indicate this; however, it seems to me that he means the actual sound processor has no games on it, but that you can download games for the system which has a PC CPU (either a 486 or Pentium, I'm not sure). The "games on the CP500 simply do not exist!" could simply be an assertion that these programs aren't playable enough to qualify as games (which would be contradicted by his forum postings, however).

Not to do with CV, but it doesn't look like fun to play Marble Madness in 2-colors on a tiny screen.

I think the part at the end where he says, "if you believe this article you are gullible" is a good indicator that this is not real. Still, it's fun to read and nice job on the screen caps.

We thought so too (I'd like to politely point out that I'm past the stage of "will post anything he comes across without reading it throughly," but the person who originally posted this at my forums did not read it through before posting it) but judging from the discussion topic it looks possible...if only slightly so. The interesting thing is that the main site has a lot of *serious* reviews of movie projection equipment so throwing in a hoax doesn't make sense.

My main issue is the article contradicts itself a number of times, and there's a number of pictures in their discussion thread that look like stuff they cooked up. It's very possible that this isn't even supposed to be a hoax, but rather an in-joke for them. There is a good deal of humor in there if you know what to look for ("Majesco, whoever they are") so that's my most likely bet.

Now, is it possible? Yes, if what they're saying about this particular unit is true (486 or Pentium processors would easily play GameBoy style games, or DOS era games), but I don't see Dolby's engineers cooking up homebrew versions of GB titles, especially as emulation was in its infancy back then (if I'm correct about the date of the machinery judging from the CPUs they mentioned in that thread) and we are talking about quite illegal stuff here, ripping off entire games. Majesco's Genesis 3 might be a piece of crap, but Majesco isn't quite that dumb. There wouldn't be a profit in it, anyways :)

I hope nobody is spreading this story as fact to their friends or pals, but I don't feel this story is over quite yet...
