View Full Version : Genesis Model 1 + Sega CD Model 2 + 32X = Stereo Sound?

As you may or may not know, awhile back I posted about trying to hook a Genesis Model 1, a Sega CD Model 2, and a 32X together AND get stereo sound. Well I was able to get the whole Frankenstein system together and it works, but sill no stereo sound. I found an FAQ today (http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/32x/file/sega_32x_installation.txt) that says in order to get stereo sound out of this combo I'd need to run a cable out of the front headphone jack of the Genesis, plug it into a MODEL 1 Sega CD and then use the combination of Sega CD and 32X A/V cables into the TV. All of this sounds like a huge pain in the ass (not to mention I don't have a Model 1 Sega CD), so I've decided to just get a Genesis Model 2 instead. This will allow me to get stereo sound with just one cable and it is much more compact (as always, space on my TV stand is at a premium).

So before I go pick up a Genesis model 2, I want to know if it has any advantages/disadvantages over the model 1 (other than the model 1 looks cooler). I know a few games don't work with the model 2 (so I can't play Budokan. Whaaa!), but is that it? It sounds like a pretty good compromise for stereo sound to me.

BTW, anyone have a model 2 for trade?

...and then there are the games that were so poorly made they only have a mono cd soundtrack.. Mortal Kombat being the worst.. I swear someone recorded the arcade tunes onto a mono audio cassette then made a music CD from that... It's that bad

IMO the model II looks better with the model II CD. Takes up a little less space too. Only disadvantage is it's not the origanal. You can always have both hooked up though 8)

BTW try to get a model II with a virgin expansion port. This will avoid problems.

Another thing that won't work: the original PBC. It just won't fit and you'll have to take it apart just to use it on Genny 2. If you had a rare European PBC2, that can work on Genny 2 but it has no card slot so no 3D games or card games. :P

Why can't you just use stereo AV cables? They make them for model 1 and model 2 & 3. If you plan on running a 32x on top you'd need a model 2 & 3 stereo AV cable.

The Genesis model 1 is only capable of producing stereo through the headphone jack at the front of the system, the port in the back is Mono only. The 32X only pipes out what it gets in, so if it gets Mono in it produces Mono output. Having the cable come out the front looks ugly, but I suppose it is possible (assuming I can find the right cable).

I'm pretty sure they made Stereo AV cables for the model 1 Genesis. I know people who have bought them. I only have a mono AV cable for my Genesis setup though. It uses a 5-pin DIN connector. But there are actually 8 pins available on the Genesis port.

The piece that comes with the 32x, which connects to the Model 1 Genesis has how many pins? I'm refering to the DIN plug side. If it uses more than the 5-pin mono, it most likely IS piping Stereo into the 32x. Then all you would need is to find a stereo AV cable for the 32x out. Same as the model 2 & 3 Genesis.

Doesn't the same system 1 mono AV cable work with the SMS?

Yes and that's the problem. The SMS and Genesis model 1 have the same DIN connector on the back so they're both Mono. I've read several documents and they all seem to say the same thing. Can someone confirm this?

The SMS and Genesis 1 A/V cables are compatible, and both very mono. There is absolutely no stereo audio leading to the Genesis A/V connector. Unless you've rewired the console, there is no way to obtain stereo audio from a Genesis 1 without using the headphone connectors. I used to use my Commodore 64 video cable with my Genesis(which has 3 RCA plugs: Y/C+Audio, 2 of which share the same pins as the composite video/audio on the Gen1); I suspect similar arrangements have caused this confusion regarding the existance of Genesis 1 stereo A/V cables.

That being said, I still don't understand why you don't want to just use a 1/8" stereo male -> 1/8" stereo male wire to connect the Genesis into the Sega CD, and use the RCA jacks on the SCD for audio. I only wish more consoles used standard A/V connectors on the back. It's only a little extra wiring, and it beats the hack 'n slash you'll have to do to get a Gen 1/SCD/32X down to one A/V cable.

Besides, stereo Genesis 2/3/32X cables cost alot more than the mono versions, and seem to be harder to find. If anybody can source them for under $6, I'm all ears.

That's what I did and it seems to have worked. It's just a clusterfuck of wires back there (can I say that?). It all works though and I guess that's what's important.

I believe that 'clusterfuck' is the most appropriate word for this combination. After all, a working Gen1/SCD/32X by factory specs consists of:

1 Genesis
1 Sega CD
1 32X
1 Genesis -> SCD audio mixing cable
1 Genesis -> 32X video mixing cable
1 Mini-din to Genesis A/V adapter cable
1 Large aluminum RF shield (Gen-SCD)
1 Small aluminum clip RF shield (Gen-SCD) (hah! How many of you are missing this one?? goes on the bottom vents of the Genesis)
2 medium aluminum cartridge port RF shields (32X-Gen)
1 Model 1602 9V 1.2A Power supply
2 Model MK-2103 850mA Power supplies
1 Gen2/3/32X A/V cable
1 Stereo RCA cable set

Rember, if you're missing any of that shielding, you're operating your equipment in excess of FCC regulations Subchapter 15 part J :D

In retrospect, perhaps 'clusterfuck' is not a strong enough word.

Yep that's pretty much what it looks like. I have the plates but I never put them in. I'm sure the FCC are on their way to my house right now...
