OK, so far we have the rumored N5 from Nintendo. What about Sony and M$?
PS3 is probably the unimaginitive next name for the playstation 3
Y-Box? Maybe? It WOULD be funny if they came out witha Y-box shaped like a Y :) X-box 2 ont he other hand, would be flat out STUPID.
N5
PS3
Y-Box
Sigh, whatever happened to sentance sized - Super Nintendo Entertainment System?

It's interesting to see Nintendo mentioning the N5. When you look at it like this:
XBox 2
Playtstation 3
N5
...it sure makes the Nintendo one seem superior. There are a lot of non-gamers that buy gaming systems (relatives, etc) -- those are the same people that were complaining that Madden 2004 came out in 2003, Madden 2003 came out in 2002, etc.
I think they should stick with those pre-production names, like Dolphin and such.

Anyone have a list of those pre-production names like the Dolphin, Katana, etc.. etc...?

I'd like to see some axed names of the old consoles.
My votes:
PS3 (just makes me want to buy it!)
X2 (the logo will be anyway)
Super Gamecube

Perhaps a few less than serious proposals:
(Microsoft) SuperBox (w/little red cape)
(Nintendo) Game Pyramid (or Sphere, or whatever)
(Sony) JoyStation3 (3 times the joy?)

How about the Okama gameshere?
Okay, I have been watching too much south park. Aside from that, I heard somewhere of this potential name: Nextbox, or Nexbox.
pretty crappy huh?

The Sony PS3 is pretty much money in the bank...although I think they should have some similarities between product lines...they have the Walkman...the portable Playstation should be called the Gameman...
Microsoft = X^2...gaming elevated to the next degree :)
That way the third one could be called the X-Cube ;)
Nintendo = Go back to what work for them...Super Nintendo Advance

The Dreamcast was also known as "Black Belt" and "Dural" at some points in time... Sega also used a slew of planets/roman gods names as pre-production names, such as Mars (32X), Venus (Nomad), Neptune (32X+Genesis, not released), and Jupiter (Saturn sans CD-Rom, not released). In some cases, you can still see these names on the circuit boards (open your 32X, and you'll see).
The N64 was known as "Project Reality" and "Ultra 64" for a while, and the Lynx was originally known as "Handy" before Atari bought out Epyx and gave it a much cooler name. Atari also had a history of naming their hardware after (supposedly well endowed) women... such as "Stella" for the VCS, "Pam" for the 5200, and a number of others. I think "Video System X" was another pre-production name for the 5200 (although I might have that one wrong, it would have been a cool name). Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.
As for the new consoles, I think it's incredibly unimaginitive to stick a number at the end of a console name (As if "Playstation" and "Gamecube" aren't literal enough already). I really hope "N5" isn't the final name of Nintendo's new console. Sega was one of the few companies that actually put some thought into the names of their consoles. "Dreamcast" and "Genesis" are awesome names for consoles.

I honestly wouldn't worry about Nintendo leaving it at N5... although I do fear it being something very very stupid sounding. I just realized that the Gamecube was the first one not to use "Nintendo" in its name, which is hopefully a trend that will continue. The gameboy, although it gets names attached to the end, has gotten overused IMO also. What can I say, I like change.
Ps3... I wouldnt expect anything different. Honestly. Maybe Playstation Thrice.
Xbox2, possibly. I don't know where "xbox" came from, but they should be able to pull out another new name. Maybe "GameBrick".
Edit: Forgot to mention, yes sega's name for consoles kicks ass, even though the only sega product I have ever owned is a Dreamcast, bought this year.

Nintendo could name it the GameMAN to go along with the Gameboy.
Microsoft should release a console the size of a home theater subwoofer and name it the "you thought the other one was big?"

It sure was. There's the prototype.
If Microsoft or Nintendo call their next next gen systems <name of current console> 2, they should have the common decency to append the name of the machine with the subtitle "Electric Boogaloo."

Wether or not Atari named systems in pre production either officially or colloquially after women, Commodore sure as hell named their major architecture components after women... Denise and Agnes will ever be enshrined in my memory.

I think we're going to be underwhelmed with the names of the next gen stuff. They spend so much money establishing market and pushing the current names that using a 2/3/5 just makes more sense from a business point of view.
The only real question mark is Nintendo's machine. And even then I can see "Gamecube 2" in our future. Or maybe NES-5/NES-V instead of N-5?

How about the "Gameshpere" for Nintendos new system?
Whatever happened to ending console names with -vision?
Sony Playvision
Nintendo Super Gamevision
X-vision (Microvision is already taken)

One word: Rackmount (Or is that two words? Ah, whatever)

Well, I don't particularly want to think of the woman who inspired the "Fat Agnes" chip

Yeah, but I can fully imagine some pointy-haired boss not liking the fact that the X-Box 2 would be a whole number behind the PS3 (and 3 behind the N5!), and forcing them to use a different name. Maybe Microsoft will go back to using years after the name... X-Box 2005 or something.

Interesting point. I can't see them using the year in a console name ever, at least, not a *current* year. Maybe X-box 2010 (since, by 2010, it will be replaced by the 3rd XBox console). If you release Xbox 2005 even next year you've only got until 2006 before people start associating it with age.

Edit: Oops.. forgot how old this is. Sorry!
The Xbox is named for "Direct X" which is what it is supposedly running.
I absolutely loved the name "Dolphin" and had hoped Nintendo would keep it. It had flair.
At least they kept the "DOL" and use it in their GameCube Product ID's.
Sony just sucks. They know people will buy it no matter what so they don't even think of nice new names. "Playstation" was good for a start. But geeze! Think of a NEW name for each new console!
PS3.. *pfffttt* They could name it "Pile of Shit" and people would still buy them.

NES-5 or N5 is probably the best name for Nintendo's next system. It sounds hi-tech, will inspire nostalgia, and is easy to market.
Xbox2 is unimaginative, but not impossible. I don't know what MS is going to do, if they want to make Xbox a brand name for a family or series of consoles, or make Xbox just the name of one of MSGS's consoles and go with a totally new name for the next system. I doubt they'll go with Next Box (but Xbox Next could be a half decent name, I guess...it sounds all edgy anyway).
PS3 is a lock for Sony's next system. Playstation is now a brand name for a family of consoles. PSone, PS2, PSP...PS3 and undoubtably, PSP2 and PS4 in the distant future.

I heard a rumor somewhere that Nintendo's next system was tentatively titled the Nintendo Magma. And the new Game Boy was supposed to be called the Game Boy Elite.
Just somethin I read on the internet somewhere.

Sony's next one will be the "PS3"
Xbox's next one SHOULD be callled the "NeXtBox"... lol dunno y..
