Hi, I need help. I really don't know crap about the GBA. I got one, when they first came out, and I never really played the thing. Well, the other day I end up getting a SP. Now I want to actually get into the whole GBA thing.

My question is, what are the best games so far for the Game Boy Advance, that were created specifically for the Game Boy Advance? In other words, I'm basically asking what the best games that weren't ported from another system.

I would rather play the actual SNES game on the SNES if you know what I mean.

I'm looking more for Game Boy Advance games that were made specifically for the GBA.

I'm really looking for the original 2D games, that have that classic 16-bit feel to them. Like if it came out in 1993 on the 16-bit systems, it would have been a huge hit.

What games would you guys suggest?

Metroid Fusion
Mario & Luigi
Advance Wars 1 & 2
Megaman & Bass (I know, it came out on the Super famicom, in Japan)
Megaman Zero 1 & 2
Lady Sia
Klonoa
Wario Land 4
Wario Ware
Super Mario Kart
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
the Castlevania games
Pokemon Rudy/Sapphire
Sonic Advance 1 & 2

Yeah, I'm sure Sonic Advance 1 and 2 would have been big hits back in the day for the SNES... *ducks*

Seriously, though, these are great games. And once more, I will recommend also getting Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, even though they were released for the GBC, Capcom did a great job on them both.

If you don't mind importing and navigating simple Japanese menus, see if you can find Mr. Driller Ace. It just came out a couple months ago.

Pokemon Pinball is decent if you're into pinball games.

Turbo Turtle Adventure is a good obscure title. Think Chip's Challenge mixed with Marble Madness. It almost plays a little like Oxyd, if you know what I mean.

Gradius Galaxies
The Pinball of the Dead

Golden Sun is pretty OK, too.

I hear what you're saying. It's tough to find the good, original GBA games out there. Chances are that you'll have to dig around for awhile to find the really good ones (especially games from, say, 2001).

I wrote a number of Advance reviews on my website (which should be getting updated within the next day or so, btw), and I tried to bring attention to a few titles that didn't get as much attention as they should have. I'll send you to the archives page, so you can read up on a few of them:

I'd also suggest Lunar, Pinball of the Dead, any of the Castlevania games (I'd say the second was my favorite)....you get the point. Good luck.

Car battler Joe. You can get that game dirt cheap. It is well worth the 10 bucks for it.

Namco Museum
Golden Sun 1 and 2
All Super Mario Brothers
F-Zero

All are fine choices.

I'd highly reccommend either of the Advance Wars games. They're highly original and unique. There is really nothing quite like it available for the gameboy, and they both have TONS of replay value.

I also remember hearing once that there were older japanese versions for other Nintendo systems, (e.g. Super Wars and 64 Wars, and the like) Is this true? for no real reason except to feed my curiosity?

There were both Famicom Wars and Super Famicom Wars, but both (especially the latter) are very hard to find, even on eBay.

- Karnaaj Rally: Plays great and looks gorgeous. I found it for $10 at ToysRUs.

- Lady Sia: Fantastic platformer and a real beauty in the visuals department. It's apparently somewhat hard to find, but I've seen it at Costco.

- Ninja Five-O: Unbelievable old-school action game. Think a mixture of Shinobi and Bionic Commando. Might be tricky to find, but you could look online. Some people have also reported seeing it at Sam's Club. I got it from EB several months ago, but I doubt you'll have any luck there.

- Double Dragon Advance: Okay, this is basically a souped up version of the arcade game, but there are several new levels and new enemies. Even if you've played the hell out of the original, this extended version is more than worth a look.

Gradius Galaxies, Gradius Galaxies, Gradius Galaxies, and Gradius Galaxies. And did I mention Gradius Galaxies? :P

Seriously, this game is so good it could have been released for a non-portable console. I'm still dying to play it on a television.
