Anyone play this game? I went home for the holidays and a friend had it. Played it two days straight and didn't get past level 2.
This SEGA developed 3-D shooter/platform game looks amazing, and it controls great once you get the hang of using every damn button and stick, including a move that uses the analog BUTTON function of the left analog stick to streak super-fast through the canyons. It's a bit like really cracked-out Stormship Troopers in gorgeous multicoloured valleys, immense tunnels, and out in space. I understand this game was originallty supposed to be a Dreamcast game that was switched over to the X-Box. I've noticed that the DC seems to be ususually good at displaying high-quality textures. This game looks incredible on the X-Box, and I would love to see hoe it ran on the DC.
TOO BAD THIS GAME IS SO DAMN HARD.
Never made it past level two. Some damn hard jumps.
Anyone else try this obsure, low-selling, yet very easy to find Sega game?
By the way... the blond is my screensave at work.

I keep eying the game at Blockbuster, I think they have it for $12.99. I almost picked it up in the buy 2 get 1 free dealie.
I've played the demo version from one of the Xbox magazines and it is a really nice looking game. The jumping was really tough but it seemed like something I could get the hang of. Judging from your two day trial maybe I was wrong about that!

I played it for a few days when I got it....got to level 3 or 4. The controls are REALLY different from most games and do take some getting used to, but it's classic Sega gameplay all the way. Great game, highly underrated due to difficulty and control.

I bought this game when I first got my xbox and I hated it. The controls are horrible and it gets to the point where you have to try to make a jump like 50 times before you actually get it. Also the missions downright suck...kill all the enemies within the time limit...it wouldn't be so bad if the controls were friendly and the levels weren't 100 miles long...I especially love running out of time with 1 enemy left to kill  The graphics are nice, though thats probably the only good thing I can say about this game.

A TIME LIMIT you say? Gulp. I spent far too much time trying to make it aross that HUGE open valley in level 2 and then trying to double back using the enormous mushroom-like pillars that seem to be a quarter mile high. Never did make it back over the valley. I warped into some other part of the level that just had platforms hanging over a bottomless abyss. I died a dozen times before I went back to trying to cross the valley.
I DID get the hang of jumping and then using the right analog stick to look down where I was going to land, kind of like the Jumping Flash! series on PS1 except that its manual, not automatic. Super-cool!
This may be the game that makes me buy an X-Box some day in the distant future when X-Box games are super-cheap, like PS1 games are (I've gotton 100's of complete non-sports PS1 games for less that $5 a piece in the past year.)
That's my new thing now. The newest system I have is an N64. In about 3-4 years, I'll have a field day everytime I go to a game store (if I have any cash, that is.) Everyone will be looking at PSX3 and X2 and Nintendo whatever games and i'll be shklocking through piles of old PS2, XB, and GC games. I'd better be out of my 600 square foot loft by that point. I'm getting REALLY creative with storage as I have no den like many of you messy a-holes. I have no place to pile crap like I did in the past, so I'm forced to submit to all sorts of little construction projects to have a space to store things and not look like a uber-geek when friends come over. One room living... sigh.

Jumping in this game stops becoming an issue because the properly skilled player can pretty much fly. The controls are so nuanced that once you realize how to "really" control the characters, it literally becomes another game. The difficulty drops away (for a little bit anyways), and the game becomes even more enjoyable (I enjoyed it before I figured it out).

I bought this game about seven months ago at Target for 15 dollars. The controls do get much easier once you get used to them, but extended play left me with cramps. The missions do suck though. Not enough variety, and timed missions in tight spots are not fun. It is a decent game for less than 20 bucks, however.

Interestingly enough, this game will always be infamous for me. I was playing this several months ago when lightning struck my television, shocking me ever-so-slightly through the Xbox controller, and killing my television (along with my Xbox's ability to display in component or s-video as well, apparently). I thought it was a cool game, a little odd and hard to come to terms with, but pretty fun. For those interested, I know we knocked it down to $14.99 at Circuit City this week, can't lose at that price.

GunValkyrie is the other reason to own an X-Box besides Halo! After playing this on a Wal=Mart store demo for nearly an hour, I decided I needed it, and asked for an X-Box for my Birthday that year.
I don't know why, but I found the controls to be surprisingly intuitive. It just makes sense to me to press striaght down on the directional control to go faster (jet boost). The force feedback is the best of any game I've played. Nothing quite feeling like you're being hit when your character is being hit(and the panic that comes with it), instead of the stupid controller shaking out of your hands!
Everything thing was pretty much fine until until I got to the point where you need to use combo jump boosts (boosting in mid-air for distance in this case).
I wonder if there's cheat codes on the Action Replay for X-Box for Gunvalkarie. I'd get an Action Replay if they had codes for infinite flight time and the ability to turn off time limits.

I just screwed around in the first level until I had mastered the multiple boost technique. Not that I've finished the game or anything like that.
EDIT: Now I've played some of the second level. I'm liking this game more and more! It's the only thing besides Doom 3 that's managed to pry SB:LineOfContact out of my 'box in the last couple of months.

But yes, I agree with the people that say that the game is a tad bit on the difficult side.
Most people (including myself) also gurmbled about how complex the control scheme was but really, if you play the game long enough, it's actually a good game.
I finished the game within 4 days after I bought it last spring and to this day, the "main theme" and "mission loadout" music is still stuck in my head.
Kelly is a great character to use and is definitely the better of the two when compared to Saburouta.
My only complaint about this game is that it made me break (literally) an official XBox controller.
Because the "boost" action is activated by the shoulder triggers, I ended up breaking the mechanism in the "R" shoulder button last spring.
All I would do is slightly press the R shoulder button and the character onscreen would automatically do a stuttering boost and sometimes stay in boost mode even when the button wasn't being pressed.
I would then have to "pry" out the R button to stop the character from boosting. :o
Believe me, I was pissed, especially since I just got my XBox.
Luckily for me, I have lots of friends who work at the local EBs and they were able to hook me up with a brand new replacement controller.
I guess it does help to have friends who work at video game shops. LOL
But what about the XBox controller?
Maybe it's because it's a Microsoft product? I mean, I love my XBox and I'd rather have a larger XBox library but there aren't enough titles that I'm interested in, but that's another topic.

I love GV. I haven't finished it but every once in a while I will play it and beat a level. I buy too many games. GV got lost in the mix. I will beat it someday though. One reason GV is great is b/c it's intentionally hard unlike the poorly designed (in later levels) Jet Grind Radio. I also enjoy the control scheme, it's is genius and works great with the original Xbox controller and the type s. i wonder how it controlled on the Dreamcast. The Xbox and DC controllers are similiar but have certain significant differences like the fact that you can push the Xbox analog stick in and you can't on a standard DC controller. People that have the controls down in GV will understand why I pointed that out.

Because I'd rather bump an old topic than make my own.
Once you put some time into the game, you can just about beat the levels without touching the ground. I can beat most of the bosses in thirty seconds or a minute flat at Mobius (25 boost combo = full technique points), and now that I've gotten the hang of it, I can do really well with Kelly-2. Then again, the competition is about five other people, since the Japanese don't play Xbox. I'm not as good with K-1, though, since she doesn't have the Meteor Crash, which lets you fly upwards. Sab and K-2 do, and K-3 even has an unlimited MC (although it breaks the game).
So I'll basically spend the next few years trying to crack this game with K-1, :-P Killing things at Mobius or at least 16+ is hard when you barely get off the ground. Gotta look for ways to elevate yourself. And the bosses, X_x, instead of being able to MC up, mobius, drive-gun to near death, and then heat gun on Diahelm, you have to do all of that from just the max jump height. It's near impossible to do in one jump, lol.

For someone who generally doesn't mind games that require all buttons to play... is this worth $15 NEW, would anyone say?

Gunvalkyrie is worth $15 IMO (for the record, I got it for $10 used at EB). It's a very odd but very cool shooter. I was able to beat it, and yes, it is very challenging, but it's one of those kinds of games where you can just play normally for five minutes and then whip out some crazy skills and wow all your friends. I'm usually able to get a 20+ boost combo if I get a good starting height. Sega seems to be notorious for making games in which you can show off; Virtual-On, Jet Grind Radio, etc etc. Pull off your first continuous loop around the Bus Terminal in JGR and you'll see what I mean. (and PM me if you want to know how!)
The controls have a VERY steep learning curve, but once you master it you shouldn't be touching the ground on the levels anymore....

Just to reiterate, this game is incredible once you realize how it should be played (not the way you start out playing it).
After you've played the game for an hour or so, let the game sit at the title screen for a few minutes and watch the 1st level demo that pops up. You'll understand that there is a whole other level of gameplay waiting to be mastered.

Well, I kept reading posts from people saying it was horrible, and other people saying it was genius... and I've been blowing my money on a LOT of bad games as of late, based on high approval of others... since I don't have a local joint to rent from anymore. So I figured I would ever everyone's opinion.
Thanks all.

Just curious--what bad games did you get based on others' recommendations?

They might not be so "bad" as they are "not living up to the expectations I was given".
LOL
Lesse... Blood Omen 2, Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick, X2: Wolverine's Revenge, XIII, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Max Payne 2, Castlevania LOI, MegaMan Anniversary Collection (GCN version)... etc...
Not to mention games like Metal Arms, or Transformers, or Freedom Fighters... which are probably good games, but use the "you need to control TWO Analogs to move in ONE DIRECTION" control scheme that I absolutely HATE in 3rd person action games.
I guess it's good I only paid $5 new for Evil Dead. :D

I actualy found this game to be both hard and fun at the same time. The biggest problem is that some of the jumps can be hell to make. The first stage is mostly a tutorial of how to play. The hardest stage I found was the last few levels where you had to (spoiler alert)climb up and down the shafts as the stuff slowly filled up. Beyond that, it realy wasnt as bad as people made it out to be. It had great atmosphere, graphics, and gameplay. I cant remember what stage it was but there was one where the backgroud music had the Dr constantly talking about various Hallys effect and the children. It was one of the few X-box games I ever finished. Well worth 10$, hell, it was well worth the 30$ I paid for it.

Wow, that's a thread revival. I was going to post what I thought about the game, but it seems I already did. :)
It's not the greatest game ever, but it's pretty good. I need to try it again. I bet I can do those chain boosts alot better now, as I've been playing UT2004 with Quad jump and Low Grav mods a lot lately.
