View Full Version : What is the best "bad game" you've ever played?

You know what I mean. Everyone else hates it, but for whatever reason, YOU LIKE IT. What's the first game that comes to mind in this regard? And if you recognize why everyone else feels differently about it, state that here too! Make a case for a game that's been treated unfairly!

The first one that comes to mind is GLADIATOR (http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/gladiatr.htm).

It's not necessarily the *best* though, just the first one that springs to mind. However, you *can* knock off Irene's top on the Japanese version of the game, so it's got that going for it too. :D

Strip Fighter II is pretty much a game I can enjoy because of the challenge I get when the controls just shut down. It could've been a decent game if it weren't for those damn model scenes and that Oriental porn music. If I had the skills (and the time... and the equipment... and the initiative), I would re-program the chip and make it MUCH better. It just needs tweaking... major tweaking. It's not as bad as many people make it out to be. And for some reason, I'm fascinated with the Bella character. I don't know why either. :?:  :?:

The first game that comes to mind for me is a game I'm playing alot of right now: NFL Fever 2003.

It's been universally dissed by just about everyone out there. I think that's because it's being judged based on its competition: Madden & NFL2K3. Those are awesome games in their own right for simulation fans, and by far the best of their genre.

Fever 2003 is the bastard child of Madden & NFL Blitz. It has elements from both games thrown in. So it really doesn't fall into the "simulation" genre of a Madden or the "arcade" genre of a Blitz. It's kind of in limbo as to what direction it needs to go in.

It's still the best playing football game (IMHO) out there, and that's really all I want out of a sports game these days. That's why I like MLB Slugfest more than World Series or All-Star Baseball.

Quick & fun. Just like the old days :)

Gilligan's Island for the NES. It's quite challenging on many levels:

1. You're controlling the Skipper through a maze-like environment, trying to complete a series of mini-quests. Great "quest" action.
2. You need to make sure to keep an eye on your Little Buddy. If he gets lost or hurt, game over!
3. Each level is timed, so you have to move quickly.
4. There's an inventory factor to keep in mind as well.
5. There are 4 "episodes" to the game, each with different maps, layouts, and goals.
6. If you're a Gilligan fan - like myself - the game actually captures the "feel" of the episodes. (Though, what's up with Gilligan's STRIPED shirt?)

What's up with Gilligan's striped shirt is: pallette limitations. The NES has only 16 colors available to sprites, and that is broken down into 4 pallettes of 3 colors +clear. I checked it out to see if I could hack in a better gilligan, but because of the way he's built, you'd have to re-draw him, and take away a pallette from one of the other characters. You'd have to do away entirely with either Maryanne and Thurston's pink, or the Prof's orange. and if ya' likes Gilligan on the NES, check this out: http://raccoonlad.topcities.com/secrets.html#gilligan

And I really wouldn't say that I like the game, it's alright, but it's just a mediocre game, not great, not terrible, just ok.

Sheesh, I could get excommunicated from the retrogaming community for some of the crazy crap I've enjoyed over the years. Would ya believe I can enjoy E.T. on the 2600?? Yes, really! I think HSW gets a bum rap for this game. If you can keep E.T. out of the pits (easy enough if you are skilled), it's fun in small doses.

I will also admit to really liking 2600 Journey Escape back in the day. I think it's because I'm fascinated by video game music and J:E was the first game I had to make an attempt at producing a melody, even if it came out flat and out of tune. I can't play it over and over like I used to, but I can still get a little fun out of it.

IMO, NES Jaws isn't as bad as people say. A Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty fun too, but hard.

Oh, and I liked Deadly Towers on the NES well enough to play through it multiple times, God help me.

Total Eclipse for the 3DO (and later the Turbo version for PSX). It has the worst control, terrible sound effects, cheesy FMV, and reeks of first generation crumminess. The graphics aren't bad, but they are repetitive, as is the gamplay and enemy attack patterns. Everyone I know hates it.

"So why do I like it so much?!"

The music is killer. Straight up, old school, Van-Halen inspired heavy metal. On par with Lords of Thunder, in my opinion. Sure the gameplay is repetitive and controls clunky, but the decent graphics and incredible music save it. What could have been a barely mediocre shmup turns out to be a blast. If I've inspired someone to try it out, here's a tip: turn off the uber-annoying sound effects to enjoy the music even more.

Granstream Saga for the PSX...damn I loved that game! Short, sweet, with a good story, and hated by EVERYONE! I also liked Illbleed (DC), Carrier (DC), Blue Stinger (DC), and Spy Hunter (PS2). Seems that I'm rather in the minority though! :)

People hated granstream saga? I thought that was a great RPG!

Anyways, I'll go with my usual - Friday the 13th! Tempest will back me up on this one I believe ;)

Sorceror (Atari 2600)

I'm well aware of why everyone thinks this game sucks... because it does! But I can't help but enjoy it a little.

Global Domination for DOS. Me and a friend of mine would always love to play that game back in the glorious days of 386's. However everyone else seems to think its one of the worst strategy games for DOS. Thats the only one that comes to the top of my mind...

Robotrek and Rival Turf (both SNES). Personally, I think these two deserve a little more respect. For some reason, I enjoyed these two games.

heir of zendor (sega saturn)- koei's attempts at fantasy-based games in the past always fell way short of the mark, but this one misses so badly and so often that it went to the discount bin almost as soon as it was released! still, once you get past the fact that the overall presentation is dated, and graphically the game is somewhere between really ugly and just passable, it's actually a really addictive strategy game with multiple paths and literally endless replay value.

the game is set up so that if you take a particular path, you can get to the end within either 2 hours or about 10 (a "bad" ending cycles the game back to the first battle!), and moving the planes around on the battle areas is not unlike a slower-moving version of football.

my second choice is state of emergency, but i'll debate THAT one in another post sometime soon...

Hmmm, the first bad game that I like.....

::looks both ways, buts on fire proof suit::

Pac-Man for the 2600. You ALL know why people hated it.

I liked it because at the time I really sucked at Pac in the arcade buy could whip but in the Atari version. I didn't care that it wasn't an exact replica of the arcade, it was still Pac-Man.
