now, i may be wrong, but somewhere in the middle of production of the original brickish playstation support for dual shock controllers was added.

now does anyone know what the manufacture date of the first model playstations with support for dual shock controllers might be? i want to pick up a playstation at gamestop now that they're $20, but want to make sure there's dual shock support in the one i grab. thanks!

I THINK the model numbers of the dual shock compatible versions are SCPH-7501 or SCPH-9001. (The first group still had an I/O port on the back, the later ones did not.) Look on the bottom of the system if you can to check the numbers.

The video store near my house (which I bought my unopened DC from for 50 bucks) has the original PS1 Dual Shock unit. It's a silver box with the words "Playstation Dual Shock" on it. It hasn't been opened yet: it's brand new. Roughly 50 bucks Canadian I'd guess.

They also have two unopened N64s, a GameCube, and a PS2. It's a family-owned business, and they've never really paid much attention to selling videogames, although they have tons of N64 and PS1 games in a glass cabinet.

I've got like 5 PS1's and 4 PSone's
I'll let them go dirt cheap if you want one.
All cords ,memory cards , dial shock controllers , multitaps, etc.... :D

As far as I know, the Dual Shock controller works on ALL PS1s. The only thing the "Dual Shock" Playstation added was the light show for the CD player and removed the port in the back.

I've got an old 1001 PSX (the one with the RCA inputs on the back) and a 5501 and the dual shock controllers work fine on both.

Although, you want to find newer models to prevent the FMV skipping problem the older models would all develop. Or just get a PSOne 8-)

Yeah, what Blackjax said. I've got a 1001 that I still use fairly often, and it works great with my PS2 Dual Shock for playing Guitar Freaks.
