Can .78 version ROMs be used with a .77 MAME? Specifically, XMAME .77.1.

Most of the roms don't change from version to version. The ones that did you won't be able to use. I'm sure XMame will be updated to .78 soon enough for those anyway.

The vast majority will work fine. The games that are brand new to 0.78 won't work of course, and there are occasional rom updates that change between versions, but about 99% of the roms are the same between the two versions.
And XMAME 0.78 should show up any day now.
