Under the previews, it listed the new Mega Man compilation disk for PS2 with the comment "want to know how to piss off die hard game collectors? Release a compilation disk with 10 of the blue bombers greatest hits on it"

Well, what is confusing to me is...I consider myself a die hard game collector and I can see how this would piss off ANY game collector. Wow, introducing the Mega Man series to a new generation is really going to piss off collectors. its not like there releasing the NES carts again or anything.

So, does the release of this piss anyone off?

Not really. But I'd imagine that anyone who bought all six of the Mega Man collection discs for the original Playstation (which contained one game PER DISC, and were released only in Japan) would be a little miffed.

Well I have pretty much come to accept this as somehting that will happen. Look at Chrono Trigger, FF3, FF2 etc, all being re-released cheaper. And besides anyone who has sense will be selling them before it comes out if they so desire. But said disc (also on GC) will only be 39.99. So I mean its not a big outlay, and its cooler having the originals also. Maybe I can pick em up cheaper now.

I spose if you collect mega man games for the sole reason of playing them, and you paid out the ass for the PS discs, or mega man 7, I could see it, kinda. Personally I'd be more miffed if I paid a chunk of change for MM3, 4, and 5 on gb, only to have the mega man mania collection come out in february :eek 2:

that quote seems like it could be applied to the sonic mega collection as well. i personally don't se how collectors would be pissed, it just seems like the games are now just more convenient to play. i say this because although i have a few Sonic carts i still own the mega collection out of convenience, it doesn't really piss me off though.

Wait why is this pissing us off? Its not like they're changing the graphics or gameplay. just re-relasing it for the newer generations. Dont we want teh new generations to realize how much fun Classic Gaming is?

That is true, but that's not the definition of a "die hard collector"...I believe a die hard collector would be glad theres something else Mega Man related to add to his collection. Hell, the more games that get released today means the more games its possible for me to own tommorow!

EGM seems to post the most controversial and flat out DUMB statements when it comes to classic games and or collectors. Maybe to staff has been sucked into the "only new games are worth playing" void like everyone else.

My take on it is that they mean that the die hard collector's games will be worth less once this collection comes out.

Yep. Nothing like a re-release to kill the value of a high-priced cart... especially ones that aren't necessarily rare, just in demand.

Just curious - does this collection include the X series, or...?

EDIT - answered my own question... no X. Doesn't look like Rockman & Forte is included... isn't this part of the "main line"? Or is it just a 1 game offshoot?

Well I would say if you're a true die-hard game collector, you're never gonna be pissed off about having another game to collect, even if it's just a new version of something you already have. It's a variation, lots of collectors are into that sort of thing too. I'm sure there's a few people out there who have every variation of the Working Designs discs for the Saturn, and they had to spend a ton of money collecting them too, because there was no way to know which disc the box contained until you opened it and looked. That probably pissed off more collectors than this ever will. It's just one disc!

I also fail to understand how the release of a compilation disc is gonna lower the value of the originals. This is just a compilation disc. It's not like they're re-releasing all the first-run originals complete with all the original artwork. I would say that it's more of a blessing for most new collectors, because now there's gonna be an affordable way for them to own a copy of all of these games, instead of having to pay a fortune trying to track down the originals. This will decrease the demand for the originals, but it shouldn't lower their value. They're still the originals, and should continue to demand a premium.

Mattel has been doing this for years with Hot Wheels. Re-releasing ancient models from the past, thus making it possible for the younger generation to own some of them. However this hasn't decreased the value of the originals at all. If anything, it's increased their value, because sellers are taking the attitude that "Yeah, you can get one for cheap, but this is the ORIGINAL!" So EGM are basically idiots. This can only be a good thing for the collectors. The only way to truly piss off collectors and make their originals worthless is to re-release the originals exactly as they were originally released, with no differentiation to discern them from the originals. And I don't know of any company in any industry that has ever done that, nor will there ever be one.

Even the Majesco re-releases for the SNES had slight differences to discern them from the originals, so if this does lower the value of the originals, it's only fair because they were never really as rare as the demand for them would have you believe anyhow. Like the Final Fantasy games. You know they're not really so rare that they deserve to go for $100's on Ebay, but they do. That's probably why they started re-releasing them in compilations too. If people are so desperate for them that they'll pay 100's for a copy, because there just aren't enough to go around, then there should be more available. It doesn't make sense for a company to lose 100's of potential new sales because collectors are paying each other 100's just to get an old copy.

As someone who owns most versions of Defender/Stargate (including the Entex Defender handheld and with the exception of the Defender remake released by Midway and its GBA companion), I don't see why it'd be piss people off. The real fans of Mega Man will get the disk even though they already have all the originals. Even better: this means that they can stack away neatly their original copies and play the compilation instead.

BTW, according to Gamespot, MM Collection is slated for release sometime in February for the GCN and on March 9 for the PS2.

The reason why the carts may drop in price is that now there'll be another way to play the early Megaman games without having to either resort to buying the actual NES etc incarnations for high prices or going via emulation on a PC.
