In the city newspaper, every week they have some guy do a couple of game reviews. the reviews are OK, so i read them when I get bored. This week he mentioned something different. This chair. He said it didn't look comfy, but it was, and felt truly made for gaming.

The "chair' in my gaming room is long in the tooth. It was there when I beat Zillion, Power Strike, and Wonder Boy 3 back in the day. It's a recliner with cloth and naugahyde, and the arms are ripped to shit, and the back padding is starting to slide down the back's insides. :( Fact is, I needed a new main chair.

So I went to IKEA yesterday to check it out. I used to work at IKEA and know the drill. Skipped the showroom maze, and went straight to the warehouse. Found the rattan/wicker section, and there they were. A pallet of 20 left with only 3! I wonder if this article caused a run among gamers? I pulled it out and sat on it.

Oh yes. It rocks or reclines easily to however you want it. It gives back and neck support exactly (and only) where you need it. It's a bit low (about 2 inches lower than a reg chair), but I like that. My game room 27"'er is a floor standing Trinitron, so the bottom of the tube is only 8 inches off the ground. This chair lets me sit right in front with the picture tube at a pleasing viewing angle.

It's time to inaugarate a new era in gaming chairs. Behold, the Gullholmen!
:D

That thing looks like the most ridiculos attempt to be a chair ever. I will never buy that cause it just looks embarrasing. Does it really help your sense of balance and whatnot?

I'm Canadian, so you'll have to forgive me for not minding a European or Scandinavian feel in my home furnishings. Some Americans may find it too 'foreign' to their tastes. 8-)

European and Scandinavian DP'ers! Help Defend me and my chair! LOL

For gaming, not much beats a futon (a cushy one at that). You can sit up, lay on it couch style, or really chill in full-out bed mode!

It looks ok but I would have to try it first.

Ikea is awesome as far as (relatively) cheap furniture goes. You can deck your pad out pretty nicely - I picked up a bed and a nightstand already!

kevin,
did you find an ikea around here? my wife is crazy about that store, if she had her way we'd live in a spartan scandesign home. we have a good crib and changing table from there but i've heard a lot of their goods are not built to last. my style maven sister calls it "apartment furniture", short term decor that will break after a few years. you know the kind of particle board shelves that sag with a big TV or books on them? anyways i'd have to give that chair a sitting before passing judgement, i've always imagined my ultimate gaming chair to be somehow more captain kirk than that :)

You get what you pay for at IKEA. They have some incredibly inexpensive stuff, and that stuff is definitely short term furniture. They also have stuff that is better, and it costs more.

You can go low end to high end at IKEA. I like it because you have that choice. Sometimes you don't need Ethan Allen type stuff, depending on what you are doing with it.

I'd call this chair mid to upper range. It's steel frame makes it very strong.

I bought this about a week ago

It's awesome and the sound quality is great. Since all my gaming stuff is in my room I don't really have the option of surround sound or anything but this is a great alternative. I love it.

I work near the huge IKEA in New Jersey. I remember when i was recently furniture shopping i ended up there because everyone swore by it. Ended up leaving with the thought "This is the absolute worst crap ever made." I actually ended up back there twice, just because i figured that the entire world can't be wrong. Well - They are. The amount of business the IKEA here does is AMAZING. With actual busloads of people coming to shop there, and a parking lot the size of multiple football fields.

I still hate the furniture there. Some of it looks nice, but it's generally all flimsy crap that looks and feels cheap. A dormroom is about the only thing i could imagine it being good for. Certainly not a house of apartment. I'd also say it's not really representative of European or Scandinavian furniture styles. (Which i love BTW. My furniture was imported from Norway) But more a a singular entity representative of only itself. IKEA is IKEA.

But to each there own... My videogame chair is my leather couch, or a big giant leather bean bag i can throw in front of the TV to sit on.

Damn, that setup is hot, and kinda creepy at the same time? Like THX1138...

Lol, THX1138..good one. When it is closer to completion, I plan on adding more color. There will be vertical blinds covering all the shleves behind the "game stand" things, and they will have posters (or something) on them, cut so that they fit on the slats of the blinds. Then, when you "open" the blinds, they all swing open and reveal all the games and systems inside. Will make things look a lot more clean...I hope )

I'm from Bergen County, sup.
I like IKEA stuff. Most of my furniture is from ikea. It's cheap, and it's not the most durable stuff, but I've had a $50 table, $30 shelves, and $50 av shelves from them for years.
Not all people beat up their furniture and need it to be invincible.
It's been fine for me, and tons of other people. We just can't spend $1000 on a couple of shelves.
