According to this UK game mag I've never heard of "Edge" http://www.gbacentral.net/news/gba2.html

This all sounds like some sort of Gaming Inquirer crap, they speculate that:

NEW GBA IS MAJOR UPGRADE

It's got four facing buttons, a flip-top and back-lit screen and a brand new battery according to British sources. In. Here. Right. Now

10:44 According to senior British sources, the new, long-rumoured back-lit Game Boy Advance is likely to have a significantly different design over the current model and is likely to hit Japan before the end of the year for around 10,000 yen (55).
Sketches currently doing the rounds suggest the new machine has four facing buttons, two shoulder buttons and a flip-top reminiscent of the later Game & Watch consoles of the 80s.

As previously heavily rumoured, the hardware will be back-lit, although new information today tells that the battery for the machine will be a slim-line affair similar to that used in mobile phones, providing around 10 hours of play time. Further, the new GBA is said to include a new, more powerful processor. An increase in onboard RAM is also possible.

Nintendo has made no comment on the subject so far, but is expected to make some kind of statement before the end of the day.

The news arrives on the back of reports that Nintendo is to make a large announcement in Japan sometime this month to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the company.

Senior insiders confirmed recently that Nintendo Europe is currently testing a new model of GBA, although the machine was thought to be simply a back-lit version of the current hardware until today. A European launch has been rumoured for next Easter.

Edge is probably the highest profile magazine we have in this country. Whilst the reviews are often subject to scrutiny, the articles and opinions are pretty much on the ball...

I was looking forward to a backlit Game Boy Advance, but not an UPGRADE. That means a wedge in the portable software market... you'll have to buy a new system to play the new games. In my opinion, that STINKS. I hope Nintendo knows better than to do this, because I sure won't be happy if they do.

I'm all for a radically redesigned GBA.

I actually think the GBA is one of Nintendo's weakest products in years. Sure it's pretty successful, but they cut so many corners when designing it... screen quality, pixel resolution, control layout... oh, what could have been.

I want to take the control pad from my NGPC and stick it on the GBA.. the GBA controller pad is so lame, sometimes i have to push down really hard to get a diaganal movement.

If I have to upgrade my GBA, I don't want GBA 1.1, I want GBA 2.0

I agree 100%. After owning the GBA for a while I really think the handheld market is ripe for the taking. I've been really dissapointed in the quality of the hardware and software. I think that the SNES remakes are the best thing going, says something. (Well, and Castlevania :)) It's like Nintendo knows they have handhelds on lock down and just doesn't care about the consumer b/c they know they don't have to.

I'm really surpized no one has stepped up, but I guess after all the failures against the first Game Boy, no one wanted to risk it. Shame though. I think if Sony came out with essentially a PSX in a handheld (which maybe could be done?) and got all their third parties to make games, they would give the GBA a good challenge.

A Sony handheld with mini-discs. Maybe even Gamecube size discs... I don't see why not.. I have a $30 CD player in the minivan that has a 45 anit-skip, and you can beat the hell out of that thing, I've seen it fall off dashboards and shoot accorss the floor without missing a beat, so it's not un-realistic. And if they got it running on the same type hardware, how hard could it be to simply re-release PS games in mini-CD/DVD format?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. :) I think the Mini_Disc format would be a nach, because they are in a cart like casing already. My MD player will not skip, period. The only thing I don't know about is how the compression scheme used for the audio would effect data. I know Sony had data MD drives for a while, but they never caught on.

Yeah, but it would be one HELL of an expensize product. Plus, everytime I buy something sony, they end up screwing me over. As far as CRAFTSMANSHIP of their products go, nintendo has NEVER let me down.

In my case, my main two qualms with the GBA are the Select/Start buttons (try playing Zelda with that!) and the use of the shoulder buttons to change screen size when playing Gameboy/GBC games. I lost count of the number of times I accidently hit the L shoulder button while playing my GBC games... Nintendo should have made that option harder to toggle (such as holding another button, such as select, when hitting the L button).

Hopefully, the upcoming Zelda: A Link to the Past port will use the shoulder buttons instead of the Select and Start buttons for the access to the map and status screens.

LOL! ME too! Man, that annoys me!

And I will agree that Sony cranks out some shoddy workmanship. My PS2 is the only Sony product I own (and there have been quite a few in the past) that isn't fucking up somehow and I can only attribute that to the fact it is rarely used.

I don't know if it would necessarly have to be expensive though. Actually putting a decent screen in would cost, but I'd gladly pay it to be able to see what I'm playing for a change.

funny, I'm in the video production industry and I have several trinitron studio monitors that still look as clear as they did when they were new in the 80's. Pretty much every sony product I have used/owned (that was taken care of) still works great!

Now lets look at JVC  , one dead consumer grade S-VHS deck (the button actually fell off after two years of use.) 2 dead stereo amps. countless JVC linear editing systems (these cost upwards of 4 grand.) I've seen 3 just up and die weeks after warrenty.

You want to talk about bad consumer products go ask GE why their picture tubes completely wash out after 1 year of light use or why IBM can't make a HD that can stay powered up more then 10 hours a day without breaking warranty.

i have to agree with radeon, all my sony products outside my psx (which probably died due to someone spilling beer on it) have lasted and still look and work great. tv's, vcr's, dvd's, stereo's, alarm clocks, etc. all work great, and some are years old.

you cant bitch about microsoft, but its fine to bitch about sony.

According to this UK game mag I've never heard of "Edge"

Edge was a sister magazine of our late lamented Next Generation. Next Generation was a quality magazine when it first came out but over time it lost its luster. Edge, on the other hand, has maintained its overall quality over the years.

I can vouch for Sony's products too. I STILL have an original Discman, and its plugging away, happy as can be. Never had a problem, despite years of abuse and mistreatment.

i recall reading that one of the reasons nintendo went with the tiny CD format on the gamecube was so that it could be used in a future version of the gameboy. think about it...maybe thats what they have up their sleeve, a pocket gamecube.
