View Full Version : Robotron isn't half bad on the Cube

I picked up the GC version of Arcade Treasures, and I must say that Robotron actually plays quite well. My feeling previously was "don't bother without the two joysticks", but my scores were actually consistent with what I would normally do on a dual stick setup.

I give credit to those grooves around the two analog sticks (I'm talking Wavebird here, I'm not sure my corded pads have them as they have been retired). You can really dig into those grooves for accurate shooting and running. Shooting works especially well from the (normally useless) yellow "C" stick.

As for the rest of the disc, sadly I am beginning to find myself quite tired with these older games. And really, stop trying to emulate 720, Spy Hunter, Paperboy, and Marble Madness.

..and they fixed Defender's controls for all you wimps that can't hang with the thrust-and-fire method, ha ha ha...

I agree. My scores aren't as consistent or high as they were when playing on an Ultracade back during the first part of the year, but that could just be that I've gotten rusty from not playing it.

Robotron and it's little brother Smash TV play great on the Cube. I will say that a lot of the disc just does nothing for me though. 720 and Paperboy don't interest me in the slightest (and Paperboy never has). Rampage hasn't aged well either in my opinion. Overall you can't really lose for twenty bucks though!

I admit it, I'm a complete wuss. I can't handle the old-skool controls. I've tried, but I just suck with them. I'll be lucky if I ever break 10,000 in Protector on my Vectrex.

It may seem easier at first. But the game engine is still in the background. The thing is, if you ever get good at the game, when the action gets fast and furious like in free space, and you need to do split second reverses one after the other (zip left, right, left, right etc.) You will find that the directional control will often freeze! That's the one thing I've noticed about emulated Defenders that incorporate the 'push left or right to thrust left or right' control.

You need to use the thrust/reverse button config for fast left/right movement in Defender. Trust me :P

The best games on this disc, I've already owned since the Saturn/PSX days.

You must stop playing Robotron (okay, temporarily) and try out Williams' Bubbles game! I find it really addicting.
