The PS2 version of Beyond Good and Evil has dropped to $10 at Circuit City this week. I'm trying to find out if the game is any good before I plunk down the $10. I've seen reviews, but I trust the opinions of my fellow hardcore gamers...

First, it's not a sports game and it's $10.....uh, duh? Anyway, the critical praise has been almost completely positive and recomendations have been constant. So, well, yes.

I ordered it from the website. All indications point to it being a great game. It's not selling because the average Joe doesn't want to buy anything that isn't a name brand or sequel. The same thing happened to ICO. It's unfortunate, but that's just how it goes sometimes. Too bad, because stuff like this discourages developers from coming up with innovative concepts. In the end, we're the losers.

Wanted to let you know, I picked up the PS@ copy at Circuit City for $10. Got it home, played it, was absolutely DISGUSTED with the frame rate, and took it back. I picked up the GC version instead. Haven't played it yet, but if it's any btter, it's well worht the extra $10 (the GCN version is $20 at Gamecrazy).

Is it really THAT bad? What's wrong with it exactly?
BTW, how did you get Circuit City to take back an OPEN copy of the game and give you a refund?

I only played a bit of it, but it was very distracting. During the initial attack with many enemies on the screen, the frame rate plummeted horribly, and the game was very choopy. Then, when I entered a cave, suddenly it skyrocketed to 60fps. It would've bothered me less if the frame rate had constanly been bad, but it still would've bothered me.
As far as returning the game...I'd rather not say, but I'm sure you and some other members of the board can hazard a guess.

Thats very odd. I have the PS2 version and it doesn't do that on mine. :hmm:

I paid $20 for the GCN version and so far my experience has been completely smooth. I feared those sorts of problems on the PS2, and even so I'm sure they must have dumbed-down textures or models or something to get it to run on the PS2, b/c the GCN version looks like it is making full use of the system - it looks great. Decent story, good character development, gorgeous graphics, and most importantly good gameplay make me want to say that this one would even be worth the steep price of $30.

The Cube version is great! We got it for my gf's dad and played it a bit on xmas. It looks like a must have if you like the style of game (Windwaker-ish but not a clone)
Cheers,
Ben

I got the gamecube version today and only played a little bit. It seems fun so far. I like the mix between Star Fox Adventures and Pokemon Snap that seems to be going on. And the hover stuff looks like it could be interesting. For 20 bucks you can't go wrong though.

I opted for the Xbox version myself, mainly for the 480p support. Haven't played it yet, but like GRG said: critical praise has been very good (it's in the high 80's at Gamerankings). If your CC is out of it you can take the ad to BB, Kmart, Walmart, etc. and get a price match. Can't go wrong for $10-20!
