N64 Memory Card question

I picked up a second hand N64 a while back and have just noticed that the Memory Card has a sliding switch on the back of it, with 4 settings; numbered 1,2,3 and 4.
What does this do? Do all N64 cards have it?

It's currently set to 2 and works perfect, so I don't want to mess with it till I know what it does, cause I've stored some good files on there I don't want to risk losing.

Why are they called Memory CARDS when I've yet to see one that wasn't a cartridge?

the switch makes it like 4 controller paks. each one has a certain amount of space in it where you can save your files. the nintendo brand ones don't have switches.

If those things are anything like their PSX counterparts, I would only use that card for backups. :angry:
