Do you think there is a chance in....H....E.....Double Hockey Sticks, that Nintendo doesn't use some really weird proprietary media for their next system?

Does it really matter? If the games are good I don't care. I can't believe people even consider the type of media a console uses.

Well.. to avoid rampant piracy, yeah it sort've makes a difference :P

Probably will stick with mini DVDs. It's going to backwards compatible, and the mini DVDs have indeed discouraged piracy, so there's little incentive to change that.

The GameCube does use DVDs, just not the standard size ones. If I was Nintendo I wouldn't go with standard size ones either for fear of massive piracy like PSOne, PS2 and X-Box. Why make it easy to pirate? And you can't use the excuse that people want to play movies on them as DVD players are as low as $30 now.

Sadly, people are often drawn to consoles that they can mod and pirate games on... without a standard disc, it's kept most of the PSX pirates away from the system.

My brother often complains that Nintendo limited themselves to smaller discs, thus causing game developers to be limited. I don't see this as a big problem though... I'd rather not have a whole disc full of boring FMV and terrible voice acting.

Nintendo has said in the past that they have no interest in making a "entertainment machine" that plays DVDs, music, and so-on. If they stick with that theory, the new machine will probably also use some sort of proprietary size/media like the GC.

They will stick with something weird. But I don't mind that. I like that Nintendo sticks out from the rest of the competition.

I could see two ways Nintendo could go:

One: don't include backward compatibility out of the box but offer it as an add on the GB Player. Discs will be sealed in flat cases, not unlike CD caddies or mini-discs. Not sure how plausible this idea is but it does fit in with Nintendo's flair for being "different".

Two: Use DVDs but encode them the same way GC discs are. That way sound and such doesn't need to be compressed like it is now on the GC. The tray would have the standard "regular disc" and "mini disc" indentations to accomodate for the GC software.

What may be farfetched that could help is use the technology that some music companies are using to copy protect CDs. Create some tracks on the DVD that cause computer DVD players to not read them. Then hard code the track locations in the game system's BIOS so that it instinctively knows to ignore them and play the game.

I sure hope so. It has no effect on me personally, but I know tons of friends that want DVD systems. For some reason it matters to kids. :o  I really don't want Nintendo to be the next Sega.

I don't understand why kids love the fact that these systems have DVD players. I never use mine for DVDs, thats what a DVD Player is for. I like how Nintendo with the GC made it a gaming machine, not a lets see what else we can put in it machine.

I love my GC and I love the mini DVD's. They are easy to carry around in a storage case thingy. If you need a DVD player go grab one for $40 at Walmart for chrissakes.

i don't see a single reason why they should use reguiar DVD as media, the mini-dvd prevent pirates very good, they load faster, they are more quiet and they even have enough space (some ps2 games are still on CD's), i think they'll use something like the mini-dvd but with more space
