Anyone else have one of these, it's a standard made in Taiwan model # 3020, identical in every way to a standard controller, exept for one thing...

The wire that usually comes out from the top of the controller... It comes out of the SIDE!

And what's really odd is even though the Mark III pads had the wire coming out of the side, the Japanese Master System pads had the wire coming out of the top like US controllers.

Anyone else ever see one of these odd SMS pads?

yeah i had one, but sold it off with a set on ebay a while back. I hate it cause i could never wind it up the way i liked. I also had one that had a ring in the middle of the D pad.... what's that about?

I've seen them mentioned somewhere before now, but never seen one myself.
Wow, aren't I being helpful today [/sarcasm]

I'm pretty sur ei Have one of those in my "controllers for Sega system bin" (I have too many--I don't even HAVE a Master System). The cord-coming-out-of-the-side seemed like a bad idea, and I just assumed all controller for the SMS were like that. But I guess not.

Uh.. this isn't all that strange. They made both versions back then. I have two of them. :o

There was a tiny "knob" that would screw into the D-Pad to create a small joystick.

I do believe that was the first version... I remember reading it in the SMS FAQ

That knob used as a joystick for the SMS control pad shortly lived because of Sega's concern about getting sued, big time, if a child chokes on one and dies.

I personaly have a set of controllers like this, 2nd hand. However, I'm missing the joystick knob for each contoller.

I hope somebody has their joystick knobs still screwed on to the these hard to find joypads by SEGA.

Are these mini screwable joysticks any better than the mini screwable joysticks that came with the Gravis GamePro controller (also screws in the middle of the D-pad)? I sure hope so, because Gravis' mini joystick was so bad it's useless.

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but I had to :) These controllers are as common as the others with the wire coming out of the top. I think they were the first, and they moved the wire later on... and that was probably because it was quite uncomfortable having a wire in between your fingers while playing! The middle rubbery part removes revealing a gold screw-hole for the add on mini sticks. They were as useless as the gravis pad add-on sticks are are, making for an unpleasant game experience. This is probably why you will come across later revisions of the pad that have no hole in the middle.
