Just out of curriosity, does anybody have all on the US release NES games? This was my first goal as a collector, back before I knew that there were other collectors; and I was just wondering if anybody has done it.

I wouldn't mind hearing what those folks consider "complete" to be, since we all have our own opinions on it.

Not yet, but I will eventually (yeah, yeah, they all say that). I'm at 689 different carts right now and have most of the rare ones out of the way. Getting that Stadium Event and Myriad 6-in-1 is going to be a pain in the ass though.
BTW, I don't consider those pirate Sachen carts essential for a complete NES collection either. I go by the NES section in the DP 5 Guide. Once I get all of those (with the exception of the NWC cart), my collection is complete.

I think in my mind I agree with Norkusa... Complete to me would be everything but the Sachens and NWC. Though I have a feeling that if I get to the point where I had everything but the Panesians I would probably be content to call it quits. Just over 300 carts now I think, so I still have a ways to go before needing to worry about it.
Luckily, a lot of stuff that I need is cheap and common (10 Yard Fight, Soccer, etc) and I am more than content to bide my time until I can get them for under a buck each.

I'm with you guys on what's considered complete...the Sachens, Panesian, NWC carts are just too far out in left field. If you remove those, I only need about 40 or less for the complete run.
PSX complete is still about 75ish away, Lightspan Not Incl. ;)

darth vader needs 2 which he can get fairly easily. He just doesn't want to.
I need about 19 more, I'm not sure if you guys are going for cart only's or not or if you want cart, book, and box.
Pics of my collection are in my SIG. there are older and I have added a bunch of sealed carts to my collection. plus I should be getting a complete stack up soon.
(Actually the NES wasn't all that bad, it took me about 2 years of hard searching both on and off the internet and I found most of mine. )

If you don't count Panesians, add D_N_G to that list. That's all he needs, as well as about 60 boxes and manuals.
Payer-2 has a full set as well, including both NWCs, you may have seen him pop his head up every so often, lurking or posting.
Jeff D (the one who recently sold his grey NWC) has a full set, with pretty much everything complete.
I'd be surprised if eBay users beyondtetra, twinturbomike, or xnytxowlx don't have full sets by now.
Buff-G (buffsales now?) is about 50-100 away from a full SEALED set. Scary, huh?
I have a full set, missing 100 manuals, 350-400 boxes. I haven't been trying too hard, as Genesis takes most of my collecting dollar. I also have a full Sachen set and all three Panesians, if that consitutes your full set. No NWCs yet, as my money isn't that disposable yet to allow me to grab one of each. It started slow, as I used several local game stores to buy titles I didn't have, then used eBay to grab a pick-and-choose bulk lot, and then a combination of wild hunting and eBay to fill the holes.
nork, I wouldn't call the Sachens pirate, unless you want to invoke TheRedIre ;)

I have them all except the sachen and myraid. Only about half of them are complete games though. I have 100's of doubles which if i ever get around to making a trade list i will put on here, I have been out of the game for awhile but coming back. My last experience in the scene was a bad one so i left for awhile. i sent a ntf2 white lable mint to a guy that used to be on here his name was syclone and he ripped me off and never sent the myraid or i would have a complete set he is nowhere to be found now.

By complete do u mean all the games with box and instructions?
My strongest collections would prbably be genesis and n64 but not all my games are compete , mostly former rentels cuz my local video store sell em for about 2 bucks so i cant pass that up.Perhaps ill start working on improving my NES and SNES collection. No way in hell im going to collect all the gameboy games.

Romance of the 3 Kingdoms II is the only "normal" NES cart I still need...I've put the Panesians, NWC & Stadium Events out of my mind in terms of completing my NES collection. The most I've paid for any of the NES carts in my collection is $20 so far...If I find one of these exotics in the wild fine, but I'm not shelling out hundreds of dollars for one. I'm focused on books and boxes now, with between 400-500 of each right now.
Got the bulk of my NES carts at Funcoland, right after Christmas 4-5 years ago...almost all of the carts were $1.99 or less, with many under .99. I would walk in with a marked up price list (remember those) and have them pull every cart they had on it (all NES were behind the counter then). At one store, I got 60 carts for just over $40.00 (loved that 10% discount)...tied up a register for about 15 minutes ringing up that order. I think the final reciept was about 5 feet long.
Ah, those were the days!

I am now down to just 4 miserable carts for the US set, if you just count the liscenced carts, I am down to just two. I am missing Secret Scout, Menace Beach, Flintstones 2, and Stadium Events. I dont give a rats ass about the Panesian Games, as well as the NWC and Sachens. I have found nearly all of my carts in person, and half of my set is complete(450 boxed with instructions.) The best things in my set are a sealed Cheetahmen II, A Caltron 6 in 1 with a Myriad box and Inst, and as well as Bubble Bobble part 2 complete, a complete and boxed Koei collection, as well as the Dragon Warrior series. I am happy to be with a small group of people that have climbed the Nintendo mountain....

HI! My one true claim to fame as the owner to Player-2 game exchange (Player-2.com) is that I have every NES cartridge ever released in this country. All the Sachens(Mint);the panesians;gold and grey NWC carts;Alladdins;and the test carts(grey and yellow).I am still missing a few of the fifty or so 72-pin NES carts(not famicom) that were not released in this country.Maybe one of you can help me.I also wish to expand my american collection to include every label variation as well. There are four "10 yard fights" ; two "donkey kong classics" and dozens of other serial number and label variations(other than cartridge color variations)out there, but no one has seen fit to record this list....I have searched for years....I am sure I have the largest one already.(yes,I own a digital press and yes,I've asked dp for help to no avail over a year ago).Anyone have a serious lead????
The closest anyone has come with a variant list was Todd Miller, and his complete list. Sadly, he has disappeared off the face of the planet. Maintaining a list of this sort is a massive undertaking, even for DP, as it is BEYOND nitpicking. And costly. And a whole lot of time. I also want to attempt a full full-variant set. The only problem is, a few reasons:
1. Money. You'll basically be buying a full NTSC set AGAIN. (Player-2, I know this isn't much of an issues for you, but for me and the majority of DP, for the time being, we can't write our collecting habits off as tax write-offs ;)). Like P2 said, did you want to have 3+ copies of one game? Now you have to. I wouldn't want to attempt to find variants for Flintstones 2, and other desired game. Imagine seeing the illusive F2 variant, and you get into a bidding war with ubergoon. No, I wouldn't pay $150 for a loose F2, but this guy would.
You could save cash by knowing for sure it's something you need, but that's another bullet point.
2. Time. Ok, do a search for Golf. Regular Golf. Ok, there's a lot of 'em, right - and cheap. Ok - differentiate. Ok, let's start by inspecting the individual auctions. Ok, this pic shows one I have... hmm, this one is in a lot... better ask the seller (email sent). Ok, 4 of these have no pic at all. (Emails sent). Next... a pic.. and it's blurry. EMAIL. Ok, I need this one, and it's at a $1. I'll bid.
Two days later, you have 2 emails with responses, but you don't need those ones, 2 don't what the fuck you're talking about, and 2 haven't even got back to you. And you got sniped by some ass, because you, like almost (ALMOST) everyone on the planet won't pay more than $5 for a copy of Golf, but the one person on the planet who would, happened to bid on your auction and outbid you.
Now let's do this for 700+ games. Being as my day only lasts 24 hours, I personally couldn't do this. I would just buy massive lots, pray, see what's different, resell, move on. Go back to point #1.
3. Sachen variants. Aha. Hahaha. Bwhaha. Moving on.
4. You can never be sure. When does it end? *shrug* Couldn't tell you. There is no end point.
5. #1 + #2 + #4 = What do you get?
You get a unique set, that's for sure. Rest assured that no one else has what you have. And probably very few even want it to begin with. Saying you have it may induce awe, but afterwards, it's kind of a... umm, great. I've seen feedback like this on NW. It is OCD at its finest. When selling it off, it may garner more people and more attention, but it also lowers the amount of buyers who would be able to pay for it, and those who would pay for the time, money, and effort you invested in it. On top of this, the info procured may be useful, but again, to a small group. I don't know how you've searched for years, P2, when you've only come onto the eBay NES scene this past year, but I may be wrong. If you have searched, I hoped you would have found Todd's list.
Judging by this post's response, myself and Mr. P2 may be the only ones interested. :) I know DreamTR could not give two hairy fishnuts (and his collection would beat any full variant set, as you just can't beat 400+ protos), and I'm sure other collectors who have chimed in already could give their apathy towards such a goal. I may be wrong, though.
Another note: The aforementioned Todd Miller has/had a full set, as does adame2 (I *think* so)

I will probably never be able to accompish what you have and I think it is awesome that you did. Just for the sake of knowing, I would love to eventually find out how many carts a complete set would be if this set included every color, screw, serial number, and other variant. Another thing I would love to say (probably impossible) a complete set of every variant of every US / JAP / PAL nes / famicom game .... (now wouldn't that be a hell of a collection.

HEY!! Thanks for the reply! Your well thought and well presented arguments have wained my inertia to attempt to collect the variants....I never even gave thought to the sachen variants @_@ .I do ,of course, have Todd Millers list...it was a great starting point(just kidding...no disrespect intended).I should correct one of your premises however...please don't confuse my lack of appearance or use of this site with my lack of knowledge of it's existence.Same for ebay.I use computers like drills....when I need to make a hole,I pick it up....when I'm done,I lay it down. It's no toy to me :eek 2: (please forgive me all those I have offended).A necessary tool is all.Give me an 8-bit anyday!!! I'm missing all Sachens, all R8's, R9's, and the R10 NWC's and a few others. But I do have Cheetahmen II, every R7, and almost everything R6 and below loose) . However, I made a resolution in January of 2003 to get every US release complete (meaning box, manual, and maps, if applicable) At the time, I had a handful of boxes and manuals to go along with my 700+ loose games of mostly poor cosmetic quality. It's one year later now and I have exactly 253 complete near mint nes games. At this pace I should have every game "complete" except for the Sachens and the super-rares in precisely 2 years time.
How much is a complete Sachen set going to cost me in the future anyway? I remember when a *mostly* complete set sold for $600-something on eBay a while back. I don't consider them US games, but I definitely want to get ahold of them sometime.

With all this talk of mint and complete I have a question for the completist guys. How exactly do you store those boxed NES games without them getting crushed, caved in, etc. I know on the outside it seems like an easy enough solution but when you get 200+ going that can be alot of weight going against any one particular piece of cardboard. Also are scuffs and scratches a concern when you pull a game out or if you care about that sort of thing do you just not touch the game at all?

You guys have some sweet collections. I have about 240 to 250 games I will buy more soon but theres so many and I have limited time. A full collection of variations would be around 3 or 4,000 games minimum. Some would be so hard to find. There are at least six Action 52 variations alone and not to mention Cheetahmen IIs too. That would be darn tough to find. My one claim to fame is owning the elusive Action 52 with the Black pcb inside, no one else has seen one before.

Player-2: I apologize for taking any generalizations or assumptions in my response, I just was trying to tune it towards you, based solely on the fact that you own all those stores (Ahhhh, so lucky), and when I first saw you as firsticey on eBay. If I ever get a breakthrough on information, I'll point ya to it.
vintagegamecrazy: Yep... I know of 3 Action 52 types myself, and that's just SCARY to try and tackle. And how about Cheetahmen II, where a good chunk of the games are sealed, and you can't even inspect the carts without costing yourself a ton?!
mistersausage: http://schwillz.com/ccdebt/ The carts are by themselves, as are the manuals, for a few reasons. One, these bookcases don't accomodate boxed NES games that well, and I don't have nearly enough boxes yet to actually start boxing everything that has a box, and the manuals, if they need to be sorted or looked through, well, it's easier than storing them next to the game or in box now, as I may damage either trying to get to the manual if needed, and finally, if I want to play the game, this is the most accessible way to do it. The boxes were a mess until I took excess styrofoam blocks, and loaded the bottom 25-35 boxes of each stack with 4 each, making it a solid unit. This provides stability, and protects those boxes that were subject to crushing.
DrMorbis: I think the last set (minus Huge Insect?) went for $1000, but I could be wrong. At least $600, that's for sure. Also, something to keep in mind on Sachen, that shortly, it may be a rare thing to have a full working set. I know I don't have one - as my Middle School English cart has never worked. :0

Dave, you have an AMAZING collection!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!
As far as storing NES, I too am a collector, but am not anal about box/manual damage. All games that have boxes, are stored in the box + manual. The rest have the carts on their own, and the manuals are pilled together.
Unlike you, I actually purchased all my stryro's.. I believe 400 or 500 worth! It's amazing how strong an NES box can be once it has the cart + styro in it.
Your collection is amazing.. only a 100 or so to go for me.. but unlike you, I strongly doubt I'll ever stomach to spend that kind of $$$ for a stadium events and the 3 adult games.. (which wedding & house shopping just around the corner for me)
Dr. Morbis
01-12-2004, 01:23 AM
Due to the nature of cardboard, I don't see why anyone (who actually played their games) would keep the carts stored in the boxes, unless it was because of a dire lack of space. I store everything seperately. The games are stored horizontally (alphabetically by publisher) in dust sleeves. I used to store them vertically, but it became a nightmare to continuously retreive and return games at the bottom of the stack. My manuals are stored in 3-ring binders in 5"x7" picture holders: it looks cool to leaf through and provides easy access. The boxes are displayed on bookshelves. I store them upright like books so they don't get any undue stress (much like dave2236's pictures).

Portnoyd, are you saying that some/all Sachens contain volatile eproms which will inevitably succumb to bit-rot? (don't some other unlicensed games also have eproms? I don't open carts if any screws are hidden under the back label, so I've never been able to check myself) But is this documented somewhere?.

I'm focussing on my PAL NES games first. First individual games, then label variations (European versions with drawn art and the ones with pixelated art) and different language versions.
I'm not so nitpicky that I'm going to collect every different country code (like having SMB 2 as FRA, NOE, SCN), there are even carts with the same license code, but with a different Nintendo Seal.

I store my games exactly like Dr Morbis mentioned. You will kill your boxes if you are constantly opening and closing them to take the games out.
I look at variants as a little extra touch to make your collection stand out. The only ones I'm really interested in are the ones where the label or cart itself is different (ie. standard vs. yellow label Metroid, gray vs gold Zelda). I definitely don't care about silver vs gold Nintendo Seal of Quality, that's just too picayune for me.

I've got 125 NES games (http://jasoco.no-ip.com/gamelist.php?sys=nes). After dupes I've got about 112.
So I'd say I'm about 600 away from complete. X_x
US NTSC of course.
I also don't have any plans of going after NWC either. But I would like to have all games that had regular versions and Classics Series versions and ones that were released in two colors. Like Zelda. I have both gold versions. I'll go after both gray versions soon. But not at Gamestop prices.

What is the general NES collector's opinion on the status of Huge Insect as an "official" release (official by Sachen standards, that is) ?

The closest anyone has come with a variant list was Todd Miller, and his complete list. Sadly, he has disappeared off the face of the planet. Maintaining a list of this sort is a massive undertaking, even for DP, as it is BEYOND nitpicking. And costly. And a whole lot of time.
Gee, thanks Dave. Although I can't blame you for not knowing about the old site, seeing as no one else ever has either.
I've got all the NES games, sans a gray NWC and the Sachens.

WOW! I had no idea there were so many of you crazy fu**ers out there (I am SOOOO jellous). Nice work to all of you who have completed your collection. Keep it up to the rest of us who are still trying.

(On a side note about PSX, Dangerboy, "Dr Suess Cat in the Hat" and "Neopets" haven't been released yet, but you might have missed the bunch of PSX games that came out recently like Barbie Gotta Have Games and XS Junior League Football, among quite a few others that are pretty tough to find in retail stores. The Playstation will never die, I don't think.

I think today is the first time I've gone out since June to the GameStop and EB Games and came back with no NES games. Not one.
I did come back with 20 PSX games (6 in Big Boxes) and one, yeah, ONE Dreamcast game.
(Kiss Psycho Circus if you're wondering.)

Not as long as I keep buying them. I almost tripled my PSX collection today by buying 20 more games.

I'm finishing off updating some prices and rarities, but I'll post a pdf of my PSX list in a few days that is complete with the latest titles. I've got 77 of the Lightspan titles in there so far, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few more of those.

I'd be surprised if eBay users beyondtetra, twinturbomike, or xnytxowlx don't have full sets by now.
Buff-G (buffsales now?) is about 50-100 away from a full SEALED set. Scary, huh?
dave
I know mike doesn't have a full set but it would pretty much be child's play if he was going to start buying loose carts. He's about 200 away from a sealed set.
Too bad buff stopped where he did, he hasn't bought in a long time and doesn't really plan to, so unless he goes back to collecting sometime, that full sealed set is not going to happen. Don't feel too bad for him though, that sealed Flintstones 2 of his ain't exactly shabby..

I have around 375 loose carts. I keep them in large rubbermaid containers so that they stay perfect. I am also completely OCD about their condition.

I'm at 450 games right on.

I'm at around 400+. Getting there slowly.
Is it just me or does it seem like the NES can lay claim to the system that the highest number of people have a complete set?
(Counting systems with big libraries, not like game.com etc)

I'm in the 500-ish range right now...a ways to go, but I'm not actively trying. Anyone want to point me to a place where all NES games are $2-3. LOL

I can only wish to be able to own one of every NES game one day. Even if I leave out the ultra rare and go for cart only.

I have about 70ish of the 260+ NES games released in Australia. Once I complete my NES collection, Ill probably try and complete a boxed N64 library.

I think I've got close to 90-100 right now. I try! :/
On the topic of complete collections, does anyone have a complete US N64 collection?

I'm pretty sure swlovinst is the closest to one. I know he needs very few to complete it. darth vader was buying n64 stuff like crazy this past year (2004), so who knows what he has. i have almost 100 complete n64 games and about 75 boxes and manuals (75 each) to fill when i get the game loose.
NES side of things...it's always changing. I am about 85-90 unique titles away from a complete NTSC US set (sachen not included, thats another day). I have upwards of 500 complete/boxed games (if not a little more) and SO gawddamn many variations. I haven't even thought about counting my total NES games lately... guess i will have to hear sooner or later.
