View Full Version : How many people buy cheap next-gen games, just to buy them?

Ya know, the 5.00 next gen games you find at CC or Target, and just buy them for the heck of adding them to all the other games you have.

I do it all the time, hell, lots of times I dont even open them. I just buy the 5.00 games to have them! Anyone else do this? Tell me I'm not alone here.

I buy them to play and to trade so I can get more games. As far as I'm concerned, most next-generation games are only worth a few dollars anyway because that's all it costs to make the discs. Heck, I just did it last night, and I may do it again tomorrow. :D

I bought a bunch of games in November and December that I haven't even touched yet. Breath of Fire: DQ, Wild Arms 3, Nascar Heat 2002, State of Emergency...it's a sad state of affairs. That's why I'm a pauper right now. God forbid I actually secure a date this weekend...

Cmosfm, if you have any you want to trade, PM me...

I've got Haven, Zoo something, and about 10 other games sitting here. Sealed and never opened , I just couldn't pass up $5 games. :embarrassed:

You're not alone brotha, you gotta friend in me.

I'm guilty! I bought BMX XXX for the Gamecube at EB online for $2.99 last week new... not sure if I wanna play it, though the back of the package makes it look interesting.. "Everything jiggles the way it should" or something like that :)

Two copies Blue Storm for GCN
Gungrave PS2
Breath of Fire DQ PS2
Wild Arms 3 PS2
Rygar PS2
Beyond Good and Evil GCN

I have yet to put more than 30min into any of them.

I used to do this a lot with the Dreamcast (although for some reason, a lot of the cheap games were also really good), but I'm trying to avoid doing this with the Gamecube. I'd rather get one good $50 game than 5 awful $10 games.

Only for games I'd remotely, somewhat, want to play or try. Hence why I have Kung Fu Chaos, and not BMX XXX :)

I bought BMX XXX just for the sheer fact that it was $2.99 and I have played it more than I like to admit. It really isn't too bad of a game and is worth the $3 I spent on it. I would never have payed $50 when it came out, but for $3 it was worth it.

Now, I'm not saying it's an amazing game and has no problems, but it is well worth checking out just for the cut scene dialog. Besides The Getaway (which I love) I have never heard so much cursing in a video game, but the cursing and lewd jokes were very funny I have to admit.

yeah im in with all you guys. i used to work at target so since its not a huge game place, when they'd send to many games and they'd linger they'd clarence...so id lock them in my area so no one takes em lol, i had a lucky find, once i got onimusha 2, ddrmax revolition with the dance pad, smugglers run, simpsons road rage new for 10 bucks after discount for all of them..but id mostly do it so i can trade 4 in for 1 new one at EB or something .... :D

If the title atleast looked good or sounded like it could have potential I would get it. But I wouldn't get like a game that teaches you how to spell or something

I have never bought a game that I don't plan on playing. I don't trade or re-sell modern games, and I'd go nuts knowing theres a new game sitting on the shelf I'll never play.

LOL LOL

Everyone downing BMX XXX...I remember buying that one on release day for 49.99, not for the boobs, but because im simply an extreme sports game FANATIC! I buy just about anything bike, skate, board related.

And sadly, I spent the least time with this one, it was fun up until the first competition whici I JUST COULDNT COMPLETE! Even though I got 100% on some of the TH games...I dunno, its an odd game

A few of my cheap games sucked so bad that I banished them to storage purgatory so I wouldn't have to look at them anymore:

BMX XXX (GC)
Dark Summit (PS2)
Enclave (XB)
Project Eden (PS2)
Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian (GC)
Terminator (PS2)
Turok (XB)

I usually buy the next-gen cheepo games only when they are ones that I might some day play.

When wisesalesman (I think?) posted about the CC unmarked games discount ($10?) I only got about 1/3 or 1/2 of the games he listed. Not because I could or couldn't find them, but because some of them I really didn't want.

Cmosfm

when it comes down to buying a game cheap that I dont plan on playing, I never pay over 5.00. I know if the game is total crap I will eventually get it new or used for that price.

Today I got Robotech & Bloodrayne for 5.00 each, Ill play Robotech cause ive wanted it forever, but Bloodrayne is just a cheap game Ill keep sealed.

Well hell I spend 5 bucks on breakfeast or lunch so I don't think thats much to waste on a game I may not like, if nothing else I can give it to friends or family.

But I got a ps2 off ebay, and for 90 total I have got these games

Overstock- Wild Arms 3 & Powerpuff Girls Relish Rampage (14)
Movie Gallery- Klonoa 2, Jax And Daxter (20)
Circuit City-Mad Maestro, Bloodrayne, Slipheed, Robotech, Freaky Flyers, Britneys Dance Beat, Clock Tower 3 (45)

Now all of those but the ones from movie Gallery are brand new, so for 89 I have 11 games for the system which is arriving tomorrow:):) Now I finally have all the next gen systems. I am a cheapass at heart so anytime I can find current gen games for 5-10 I usually get em, if I don't like em I cna usually get my money back on Ebay so its win win. Hell even psx games gor for 5 or so at most places so hey:)

Its hard for me to pass up current gen games for under $10, and a $5 game is basicaly a must buy for me if its not a sports game.
I guess since these games retailed for $50 not long ago, seeing them at $5 seems like such and awsome deal.

I'm really guilty of this one. I bought Shadowman 2, Okage, Turok, and Blowout for about $10 and then I realized I'd probably never play any of them ><. To restrain the urge, I just remember going to flea markets and buying NES games for $.50, and these are games I'll actually play and enjoy. In 3/4 years we'll see a whole lot of current gen games going for even cheaper than $5. Time to be patient for Mr. poor college student.

I do that.
Granted, I've only done it once, so I don't do it very often.
I don't much care for newer games (I have a few, pretty much the must-haves on the Gamecube) but I picked up 5 PS2 and Xbox games for 85 cents each one day.
Now thats a deal nobody can turn down... even for older games.

I do it all the time, especially at my store (Toys R Us) b/c of the Green Tag sale and my employee discount. I bought Virtua Tennis for DreamCast for 95cents because I was sick of seeing it take up space and b/c it was less than a dollar and I needed more DC games. I bought Drake of the 99 Dragons for less than $2 despite its horrible reviews. I figured $2 was enough to give it a shot. And I bought Call of Duty: Finest Hour for $5 for the sole fact that Brian Johnson of AC/DC does voiceover work for it and I am a massive AC/DC fan. I've gotten some great games too like Arc the Lad and Xenosaga for only $5, so it's not all crap :)

I bought BMX XXX for the GameCube for $1. It's worth every dollar I paid for it. LOL

I found Barney's Hide and Seek (Genesis game) along with box + instructions at a garage sale in a box of kids' toys once for 25 cents. I couldn't pass that up. When I went to give the person who was running the garage sale their quarter they just looked at me weird. The game worked, too.

If I have money (a rarity!) and see something I like the look of then chances are I'll get it. Usually I go for awful games that I would never have paid full price for, but look tempting when I can get it for loose change.

I also pick up stuff that got a lot of pre-release hype then dropped off the map. Win Back is a recent example, and oh how crummy that turned out to be, but that doesn't matter because I got to play it without paying an extortionate amount.

You people are all wasting your money! It's insane to buy games you wont play! Yep!

I'll have you know I never buy games just to "own them" I play every single game I have (yep yep!) I may around 400 ps2, 400 xbox, 125 gcn games (using current gen game to emphasize my point) But I have played and beaten every single game I own.

I have a tube connected to me at all times so I never have to stop to eat (or go to the bathroom) and I have a laptop mounted to the pillow on my bed so i can type this message (I have batman begins paused inthe background now on my tv) I also collect money from the government so i can stay in bed all day playing games. I average playing about 43 games a day.

So unlike all you weirdos I actually play all my games! I bet you all wish you could be as normal as me! *thumbs nose*

Oddly enough, this seems to have become a BMX XXX discussion too. To weigh in, I purchased it during a buy 2, get one free sale when I had two $8.00 games I really wanted, and it was the only thing that was under $20.00 that I didn't already have for the Cube. Chalk me up as a surprised person that it doesn't suck as bad as I expected.

As for those $5.00 deals, I was just at Best Buy to return something, and I walked over to their games and immediately picked up a bunch of $4.99 stuff that I knew I wouldn't play. After a little bit of thinking, I returned them all to their places. I don't know what came over me. Normally, I would have about 10 new games right now.

I'm very guilty about this, and even some $20+ games that I get I don't get around too for too long. :(

10-04-2005, 10:40 PM
Why not? Some of those $5 dollar games will be worth 10 when PSx and PS2 get even more rare. Lets not even talk about how much rarer NES and SNES carts will be in the next 5 years.

Lately I have bought the next-gen games like that, just usually because $50 is to much for a college student such as myself to spend on a game. Take X-Men legends for instance, I wanted it the day it came out last November, but I didnt have enough money to fork over $50 for it, to many bills as it is. So I waited until September of this year to pick it up at my local game store for $8.99 and enjoyed it just as much as I would have if I bought it last November :D

I had PS2 and sold it, plan on getting PS3 to save space, Gamecube, I'm still debating whether to get large collections or not, most games are ones I plan to open and play, some may stay sealed since they're non-PC version sealed in prestine conditions. Hoping for store clearance so I can get certain doubles for $5 each.

Both PS2 and XB games will all be opened and played.

My brain can't comprehend the concept of buying games that I know I'll never play. Especially when money is so tight for me. There's a saying that goes "Waste not, want not", and I believe that by playing every single game I buy, and enjoying a good number of them, I'm not going to immediately have the urge to acquire more that someone who wastes their money by buying and shelving a game never to play would.

That said, my current gen collections are pretty piddly because I've only picked up a small number of games that genuinely looked enjoyable. When these $5 sales are going on, sometimes I go to check things out, but often I leave empty-handed or nearly so just because they don't have what I'm interested in and I'm not about to pick up games that look like complete crap to me. With older systems, where the games can be even cheaper, I occasionally get games that I expect to suck, but I'm still interested in at least experiencing them a little to see what they're like. For a buck or so, they're at least worth that short bit of playing, and sometimes I can get a kick out of a funny cover or something along those lines.
